My boys finally convinced me to play after months of watching them. The most intimidating thing for me right now is being able to build quick enough. I'm getting better at it but it's a slow process so far. I have managed to finally get the aiming down and am able to hold my own in 1v1 situations in most cases. I'm a raging 3-5 kills per game and have finished 2nd several times. I'm still searching for my elusive first victory though.

Definitely would be interested in finding adults here to team with though as the squad and duo modes are tons of fun.

That last kill is always the hardest. For me, it's the adrenaline rush that kicks in that would freeze me up. It took me 388 solo games to before I got my first win and I don't care to admit how many times prior to that I had gotten 2nd place!?! Sometimes the easiest thing to do (especially if it is down to 3 players), is to wait for the other two to engage. Then aggressively go after the victor who is usually beat up and just looking to heal or and/or the guy in the strongest position who is likely distracted. If your already getting 3-5k per game, your doing great. You will probably get that umbrella soon. Good luck!

PSA- if you are trying to get your Shifty Shaft kills, land on the battle bus wreckage just to the West. There are usually two chest there. Then rush into Shifty and clean up. It was the easiest "3 kills in POI" that they have had as weekly challenge.

I am terrible at this and all other shooters, but my kids are pissed that I am constantly in the top 10 just based on pure strategy alone. The object is not to enter a crowded space and win a shootout. The object is to survive. I use cunning and common sense to avg about 3 kills a game, but I can never best the elite builders and shooters. I enjoy seeing just how high I can rank purely on wits and mostly using existing structures.

This.

I have constantly finished Top 5 with zero kills. I have finished 2nd numerous times.

Level 22 now and my strategy seems to guarantee me a spot in the Top 20. Stay out of the common melee areas. Head to the edge of the island and always stay just ahead of the storm wall. Kill only when confronted or if you have the element of surprise.

I'll get that elusive 1st place...I hope.

The try-hards hate ppl that play slow and steady. Just read the fortnite reddit, it's full of salty ppl.

The problem with lurking on the outside is, by the time you get to top 10, all of the remaining players have epic and legendary weapons and you probably don't have a shot.
This.

You don't necessarily need legendary and epic. I have won several times with a green AR. However, if you play too passive, you will lack the ammo and materials you need. Someone with 3-4+ kills probably has over 750 of each material and hundreds of rounds of ammo. They will be able to pressure you in the final circle until you run out of supplies. Additionally, someone with 3-4+ kills has likely picked up a rocket launcher and has 20+ rockets. That is huge advantage in the end game. (this can be balanced if you can buy a rocket launcher in a vending machine).

The other problem is that "campers" usually don't have enough experience building and/or defending a fort. I have never won a solo attacking a fort from the ground in the final circle. All my wins in solo have been me rotating into the circle quickly and building up. Then defending my fort and keeping the high ground. Having high ground is king.

Go to Retail Row, Pleasant Park, or Greasy and build a small fort on top of a house. Make a lot of noise and practice defending it. You will die a lot initially but at least you will only have 5 minutes invested in the game. However, over time you will learn to rebuild you walls under pressure while returning fire which is the experience you need in getting that elusive Victory Royale.

This is my thoughts as well. I started out playing the slow game and getting top 10-15 every time, mostly top 5, and actually got a solo victory once (with 2 kills). However, I am much slower at building than most of the people I encounter. So now I have been dropping into busier locations, running to the sounds of gun fire, etc. to get into as many fights as possible. During the fights, I work on building as well. I typically get 1 kill then die, but I will improve much faster going this route.

My go to weapon right now is the Scoped Assault Rifle. Love that thing.

I'm on Xbox one as purplehaze0013. I've been playing with strategy and consistently in the top 10, but not wins on the console yet. Just one win on mobile

I wonder if us slow strategy people could make a squad and then defeat a hard charging squad in the end, because we have all 4 members remaining and they are down to 2 or 1 by then.

I'd be interested in trying this approach out, we would all have to be able to communicate via headsets though. I played with a few folks last night and we had a pretty cohesive approach in that the squad worked together to try and heal injured folks to keep everyone alive. Had to get close though and RPG can wreak havoc at that point.

I've just recently started being decent at the game, feel free to add me. Ohhlookatchris

I usually switch between passive and aggressive modes depending on how the match is going. I'm a fan of landing a little further and getting set up before going in, but I also enjoy dropping in the busier places sometimes.

I played a squad match (3 of us) with AgShaun's son, myself, and another TexAgs poster who doesn't post in the Nerdery. We landed further out, got equipped, and as we were heading towards the circle we engaged in a 3v3 in which we won (caught them from behind and had better position). After that, by the time we made it to the final circle it was our team of 3 vs 1 single guy. He was good with the sniper rifle, but we were in Wailing Woods and had good cover from anything of distance. He built a huge ramp to try and shoot down on our fort, but we all engaged the lower part of the ramp and caused him to fall to his death. It was a pretty easy squad victory.

Squad and duo are by far my favorite modes (interested to see the 50v50). When you work as a team, it is a lot of fun. I prefer when we are spread out enough to create different angles on the enemy we engage, but close enough to be able to support each other. Good communication and working as a team is absolutely key though. It sucks when you are working to get into a good position and then one of your teammates engages the unknowing enemy too soon (I am guilty of this at times). It quickly turns an advantage into a disadvantage.

I really love the variability of the game, and the way that for the most part no two matches are the same. You'll either be in a different spot, have a different loadout, etc. I'm excited for the 50v50 mode, I wasn't around for the first one and the port-a-fort is really gonna change the way a lot of the newbies play the game I think.

Well I was able to play one game yesterday before all the server issues. Got a scar off the drop so I'm feeling froggy and kill 2 right away. Then I come up behind a guy, knock his shield and start to push while he's scrambling to keep wood walls up and bam the freaking build a fort. So now he's looking right down at me and I take a shotgun to the dome. Screw that thing!

Has anyone been able to get on today? What is the status of the servers?

I waited in queue for an hour before figuring out servers taken down for emergency maintenance.

I played a couple of quick games about an hour ago. The server seemed a little l****, which isn't typically an issue for me now that my PS4 Pro is hardwired into my gigabit internet. Hopefully they smooth it out pretty quickly.
