Olympus E-M5, M10, Lumix GX-7, GH-2, GH-3 can be all had for a good price.

my main u43 is GX-7. wifi,panorama, and 8 to 10 fps. It works for me. Also it is small and has a beautiful rangefinder design including a responsive digital viewfinder.

i have a pretty extensive collection of u43 lenses. but Lumix 12-35mm f2.8 or olympus 12-40mm f2.8 is all you need for what you want to do.

you can defnitely get them below $1500.

I will upgrade to Gx-8 (20 mp) probably next year.

Sony a6500 and a6300 are good options. but Sony lenses are not cheap.

i know nothing about Fuji, Nikon, and Canon mirrorless.

I'm ready! Mr Dubi took my solar film and trimmed it in a neat circle and we sandwiched it between two filters.

I'm here to ask folks for a guesstimate on their camera settings shooting raw? Canon 70D/Tamron 70-200 F2.8

ISO, aperture, shutter

62% eclipse her in BCS. Do you think I will need to adjust the settings much during the 2 hour window?

My advice is to test it out this weekend. I did a few test shots with my solar filter a couple of days ago and with my 300mm Tamron and my solar filter I found a sweet spot at f/11, 1/100, and 400 ISO. There's a group of sunspots that provide a good test of how in focus you are. I went with manual focus after trying to get focus with AF and being unsatisfied. I just had my settings set and zoomed in with live view and set the focus. It's basically just infinity focus.

I fly up to Colorado tomorrow. We're hanging out in Denver and Fort Collins before heading to Wyoming for the eclipse. It's gonna be the most photographed eclipse of all time. I'm hoping to get some cool shots of corona structure.

Yeah I would definitely recommend doing some test exposures in advance for the partial phase. It depends a lot on what "strength" your solar filter is. The ones I use are strictly for photographic use, and let in much more light than ones for visual use. My Baader film allows shots at 100 ISO, f9-f11, and 1/2500-1/8000 SS. If your filter is for visual, you will need to adjust by several stops more exposure.

If you will be in totality, no filter is needed, nor advised. I'm not sure offhand what might be needed during totality having never been to one. It will be pretty dark then from what I understand, with stars being visible. Just have to check your screen and adjust accordingly. The corona would be cool to see.

This might be handy but I can't vouch for how well it works. I'm planning on pointing my camera at the eclipse, then bracketing exposures as I run down these shutter speeds. I think that's the best way to get as many shots as I can without thinking about it too much. I want to take pictures but also enjoy the show at the same time. Not much time to do a lot of experimenting in 2.5 minutes!

well, this is the best i can do with the lenses i currently have. being that we won't get to see the full thing here, i'm not too concerned



in 2024, there will be another total eclipse that will go thru the hill country, austin, waco, dfw, texarkana. For that one, i'll either buy/rent some better optics since i'll have access to a ranch right in the middle of the totality area.

Just shy of infinity, my lens actually goes out of focus at infinity. I marked the spot I need with a pencil on my lens.

So Mr Dubi was telling me infinity is a problem; I just didn't get it.

I'll need to remove the solar film and mark my lens too. That dark film makes it impossible to really see if you are in focus or not.

Does all of this hold true whether or not a crop sensor lens is designed for a crop sensor camera?

In other words:

If I shoot a FX lens at 75mm@f2, it would look close to that same lens placed on a crop sensor and set at 50mm@f1.4.

But what if I am using a FX lens on a FX camera at 75mm@f2 and comparing a DX lens on DX camera at 50mm@f1.4.... are those images equivalent? I've confused myself.

Yes.

A DX 35mm on Nikon will have a similar field of view as a 50mm FX on a full frame. (Really 52.5mm, but close enough.

Less than $2K what is the best camera setup (including all accessories needed)? Will use for VRBO inside and outside shots. Somewhat portable would be nice (if weight is a consideration). Heading to Disney as well, so not sure if it's practical to lug around for 12hrs a day...

Is VRBO a one time photo shoot? If yes, just hire a pro.

Well we have 2 and also a rental house. So anytime we want updated pics we'd want to hire out again. And we will probably get more...

Anyways, part hobby, part fun... would like the best most professional setup for under $2K. I just wanted to share that part of my needs is professional home pics if that dictated the type of setup.

And just for reference, got a $250 extra trip charge to our Galveston house on top of the regular fee from Shoot to Sell.

I see those 2 needs as requiring different camera gear.

So I have a Canon 70D for the nice pictures with an assortment of lenses. Canon S110 powershot as a pocket camera for running around and trips where I don't want a big camera.

I would not bring my big camera to Disney.

Wait til tomorrow when the pro photographers post.

I bought an open box 70D because it was in my price range. I think a wide angle lens to do real estate photos. You will also need a flash.

Look at page 17 of this thread. Lots of posts on taking real estate photos.

The 70D is a great camera. The 80D has a better sensor and autofocus, but depending on what you're doing, it might not matter much.

If I were debating between the two, it would depend on the price delta. FWIW, I've had good luck buying refurbs from Canon's USA website (lenses and cameras) - but KEH is a reputable used gear dealer if that's an option.

So I'm thinking the 80D is in my price range and maybe best for what I'm doing? Any tips on using for interior and exterior house shots? Any particular wide angle lens, tripod or filters, etc?

Go read the past two pages. Another guy wanted a set up floor real estate with a similar budget.

You could also probably trade nights for pics with a pro and get better pics without out of pocket cost

You want to stay a few week nights? Can't afford the weekends since they all get booked out.

Need it for both Galveston and Port Aransas.

Planning for the eclipse, I had so much planned, I had a series of shots, and i had exposure settings to get those shots. I had a solid gameplan and even wanted to switch lenses on the one body i had in order to get a landscape shot as well.

When I got to my location, I scrapped the lens switching idea because there was an ugly RV where set up.

When totality hit, I was just watching my camera so I could take off the filter and start shooting. I had a cheap paper filter over my lens hood, so it came off easily and I started shooting using live view. Because my initial shots were very low exposure shots to get the prominences and chromosphere, I wasn't seeing the true glory of the sun at the moment in my camera. About 10 seconds in, I looked up over my camera at the Sun and was blown away. I am very happy with how my pictures came out, but I could never capture the total feeling of seeing that sight. It was incredibly beautiful.

I did take a few more shots, but there's no way I was going to follow through with my whole game plan in 2.5 minutes. Was a great experience and something I'll never forget.
