Got a PS4 for Christmas so bought this gem for $28. Rough game but I'm improving. Can get to the werewolves on the bridge before dying now. Hooray?

It took me over 3 hours to open the first shortcut. Game gets a little easier after beating the cleric beast, but not much.

Keep going at it and you will get into the "rhythm" of the game. I put it away after beating it and got into Fallout, and just picked it up with the new DLC. Got killed maybe three times by the first Old Hunter before I got back into the rhythm of slashing and dodging once again.

There is that door from the house leading up to the bridge...Just sayin...

I finished up the DLC over the weekend. Man, that is some good stuff. That said....Im ready for Dark Souls III.

As great as Bloodborne is, I prefer the slower gameplay of Dark Souls...Feels more strategic.

I finished the entire DLC on the day it came out...took that week off for Thanksgiving. The boss battles were some of the best from soft has created. well, besides living failures.

Funny, cause I much prefer the faster combat of Bloodborne. I went back and got the platinum trophy for Dark Souls to prep myself for Dark Souls 3, and the entire time I played with a character with 0 poise and Dark Wood Grain Ring. But I do agree, Dark Souls does feel more strategic. Bloodborne does have more of a glass cannon mentality. But I really like that mentality.

Yeah, I really liked the bosses as well. (Didn't like the first one though...I much more prefer more "humanish" bosses).

Im glad both games exist and hope they continue with both ideas (whether they call it "Souls" or "Bloodborne" or not).

To me, the Souls games feel deeper and richer. That's certainly true for the character builds.

Also, I think I have never quite forgiven Bloodborne for the story and world. I originally thought we were getting Edgar Allen Poe gothic horror with a very human story . . . instead we got . . . well. . . I wont spoil it.

I came around eventually, but I remember distinctly in the Forbidden Woods and seeing some type of enemies for the first time and thought "oh you are kidding...really? This is where we are going... ugh...."

Souls is definitely much deeper, the amount of variety in characters, weapons, world, etc is unmatched. And at this point I don't think it's much of a spoiler to say the story goes full Lovecraft. From Soft definitely likes putting fantasy elements in their games at this point. Without it you wouldn't get some of the more disturbing bosses in Bloodborne, thus lowering its variety lower. I for one loved the story, especially after catching up on the lore afterwards and after what the Old Hunters revealed. But I'll admit, the love the lore and story in Dark Souls so much more.

Oh don't get me wrong...the design and execution of the Lovecraft themes were outstanding in every way. It was my own expectation that got in the way. I wanted more Cainhurst and Central Yharnam...less "Nightmares." I did eventually come around on it, but I had to work to get there.

Early reports have said that Dark Souls III took a page out of Bloodborne and the combat is faster. Im full blackout on that though so I cant confirm.

In the end, it simply came down to Souls being more RPG and Bloodborne being more action. Both have their pros and cons and both are extraordinary games. (I still think actually hitting something in Bloodborne feels better than the Souls games...the ribbon of blood is pretty awesome).

P.S. Do you have a good resources for what the Old Hunters revealed?

I've been putting all my levels into health and strength, with the occasional point in endurance and maybe a few in skill if I find a weapon that I want to use but my skill is just below the requirement.

Am I doing it right? Is there any point to the other attributes?
mid90
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I am absolutely in love with the world/level design of the game.

The level design team should get friggin Oscars. It's incredible.

I would find what weapon you think you are interested in. (If you are going strength, looks like its LHB for you). Then min/max your build to that weapon. If Im not mistaken, LHB scales "S" with strength, (double check that), so you would pour points into strength (no more than 50). Find out the min. requirements for both arcane and dex to wield the weapon and just hit those requirements.

You don't want a situation where you have 20 or so points in Dex when you only need 12 or so to wield the weapon you want. That's 8 wasted levels!

Do note that it seems Strength/Arcane pairs well and Dex/Bloodtinge pairs well.

You are doing it right with vitality and endurance.

SECivil Ag-11
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Yup, putting points in vitality and endurance is never a waste. Both are crucial to survival. Just don't neglect endurance too much. I made that mistake in Dark Souls my first time playing.

Edit: Also LHB is a B scaling in strength and primarily scales off Arcane, which is an A at +10.

Also, for lore behind The Old Hunters, this is one that I really like. Very high quality, explains things really well. VaatiVidya, DaveControl, and TerraMantis are also great youtube channels for lore videos of all things from soft.

I defeated Vicar Amelia last night, watched the cutscene, and have very little idea what is actually going on in the game.

If I go reading about lore and such, are there any huge spoilers I'll come across? I'd really like to know what is going on.....

Possibly, yeah. But the game is very very very vague throughout.

But to quickly summarize what's happening to the point where you are, Yharnam is a place where discovered blood transfusions to heal just about anything. However, the blood was tainted and everyone started getting addicted to it. That's why the town is kind of insane. As for the phrase "fear the old blood" you heard in the cutscene, well, seeing the Cleric Beast and Vicar Amelia should give you a pretty good reason to fear it. As for why the Healing Church was using "old blood" and why the game keeps mentioning "pale blood" to transcend the hunt....you need to keep moving forward. Since you beat Vicar Amelia, the next few locations are when the game goes from uneasy to full out disturbing.

Good luck on the hunt!

Please continue to post impressions as you make your way further.

(Not sure if the blood was "tainted" . . .Makes it easier to understand if it was).

oh my dear friend....you have no idea what you're in for.

And yeah, maybe tainted isn't the right word...let's just go with "not what they expected".

Bloodborne is good stuff, especially the expansion. Still falls slightly below Dark Souls 1, due to the lack of depth as has been mentioned already. While I love all the Souls games, if I had to rank them from best to worst, it would be...

1. Dark Souls
2. Demon's Souls / Bloodborne
.
.
.
.
3. Dark Souls 2

That's probably right, but I don't think Dark Souls 2 is THAT much lower. (though it is lower).

The build variety was best in the series. Though the level design and boss encounters may have been the worst.

The Scholar of the First Sin DLC, really fixed many of those issues.

Yeah, a bit of exaggeration, and it is all relative. I still think DS2 is a great game, but compared to the others, it falls short. One thing it did really well was the NG+ new/different content. Much more than any of the other games. That was one of my biggest complaints about Bloodborne (other than lack of depth)... there was nothing different or new in NG+, other than all the enemies being tougher.
Tex117
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Well, there wasn't really anything new in any of the other games either.

But I do agree with you.

Im hoping Dark Souls III is the true culmination of everything they have learned since Demon's Souls through Bloodborne.

I cant even kill the first enemy. Super frustrating. Even when I hit it looks like the health bar isnt going down.

I guess it would help if the game told you that weapons need to go in slot 2 to work.

Took me three deaths to learn that.

Im about ready to give up on this game and cut my losses. 4 hours in and I cant even get past the bridge with the two wolves. Plus, the checkpoint is miles away and every enemy is repawned. This is unreal how ****ing hard this is.

This is literally my same exact story when I started last week.

I promise it gets easier! Have you unlocked the gate in front of the central yharnam lamp post?
spieg12

Yea but I dont see that it helps. Also Im not getting most of blood echos back. Mabe one out of 10 deaths are they there.

The way From Soft makes shortcuts is nothing short of masterful.

Btw those wolves are something of a early difficulty spike. Try throwing a pebble at one from a distance to lure it out so you can kill it 1 on 1. Keep at it. When you beat the game, you'll look back and see how far you come and feel awesome about it.

Also, from that little house that leads up to the bridge...you can lure them...run back into the house...and they can't come in the door.

Take'em out for easy echoes. Farm them a bit if you want!

If this is your first FromSoftware game...the learning curve is STEEP...but once you get the hang of it...and you will...the games are phenomenal.

Also, another pro tip...you don't have to lock on to cleric beast.

You can only retrieve your blood echoes if you get back to your corpse without dying - if you die again before you retrieve, they disappear. That's why you're only seeing them occasionally - you're dying before you get back to the original corpse.
To follow up on this, one of the bigger changes in Bloodborne from Dark Souls is that most enemies can absorb your blood echoes. You can tell if one has them by their glowing eyes. If so, you can only get them back if you kill it.
spieg12
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Thanks for the tips. This is my first From game. I knew about the glowing eyes thing. Didn't know if you died again they dissappeared. I never killed those wolves. Just ran past them and then discovered the shortcut. Cleric beast ate my lunch though. Hoping to work on him tonight.
