reb,
How long do you want to ignore this user?
The Market is expected to top 100,000 apps by the end of the month, clearly Android is a proven success, so here's what I'm proposing:

If you would like to suggest apps to add to the OP, compile yours and post them in this thread in the format (if you would kindly do so) that I did and I will add them.

The OP is basically the apps that I personally use but they won't fit the needs of every uesr.

The format:

Italicize the purpose (Multimedia, Productivity, etc: Bold the app name. Then give your description of what it does, how you use it and details like free/paid, memory intensive, includes widget, etc.

Example:
quote:
SMS: Handcent SMS. best hands down SMS/MMS client, has pop up reply and quick-compose by holding down the search button. Also features voice to text.

This will help keep this a living, informative thread and prevent people from having to wade through 30+ pages. PLEASE post it in that format so I can simply click edit on your post and copy/paste it straight into the OP. I will separate the suggestions and give you credit. Also, please try and make all your suggestions at one time instead of 10 posts each with one suggestion, as that will clutter up the thread.

Get crackin, android army!

APPLICATIONS

Multimedia

Music Player: MixZing. I had been using Meridian, but MixZing is by far the best at getting album art from the file or downloading itself if its missing. Meridian needed you to manually put a .jpg of the album art in the directory to work which would be a PITA. Only thing mixzing lacks that meridian did was that the latter had an option to keep the screen from sleeping while a song was playing. ***LAST UPDATE*** to MixZing introduced ads so I have not updated it based on the comments.
DoubleTwist: You download this to your phone and the companion program to your PC. It supposedly will import your iTunes playlists and sync automatically with your phone. Based on comments, its still a work in progress and lacks polish.
Backgrounds: Backgrounds. A ton of backgrounds in this app, and one of the cool things about them is that they shift perspective as you scroll through your 7 home screens. The navigation inside the application could be better since you have to scroll through each screen to view them all, but thats not a real big deal.
Ringers: RingDroid. Very very cool app that lets you load an mp3 from the sd card and choose what part of the song you want to use as a ringer/notification/alarm tone.
DroidESPN. This has 16 espn radio stations on it
Cherry Rplayer. App that has all CBS radio stations (eg. 610sports in Houston)
DroidCumulus. App that has all Cumulus stations (eg. 97.5 The Ticket in Houston)
iheartradio. App that has all Clear Channel stations (eg. 94.5 The buzz in Houston)
RadioTime. Paid app, $2.99, pretty much is all of the above apps in 1, have used it with great success.
GMote. Lets you control music and movie playback on your computer from your phone. I haven't quite figured out how to set this one up but it has great promise.
Nook. Lets you access your BN.com account and sync ebook reading across multiple devices (phone, PC, nook)

Reference

News: AP Mobile, Fox news widget, CNN widget and USA Today.
Weather: Weather Widgets. Best combination of attractive widget and usefulness.
Layar. This one is a 'reality browser'. Its kind of hard to describe. The screen will look like its in camera mode where you can see whats coming through it, but what you can do is type in a key word like "gas station" or "pizza" and it will search for all the nearby locations and represent them on the screen to show you what is around your nearby location, with larger "pin points" showing whats closest along with their address/info/etc
US Constitution. nuff said
Houston Traffic. App that syncs with the Houston TranStar system and gives access to traffic flows, incident reports and even the camera system. Quite nifty if you live in the tine.
Google sky map. This one is just a cool novelty one. You run it and point the phone at around and it tells you the constellations and planets in the sky and even below the horizon. Not sure if the really bright object is Venus or not? Load it up, point the phone at it and find out.
Shazam. iPhone has this, its the one that you run when theres a song you dont know playing and it will identify it for you.
ShopSavvy. iPhone has this too, scans a bar code and will search the internet and local area for different prices so you can get it cheaper.
WaPedia. Wikipedia app, very small file and small widget that when tapped will bring up a search bar for wikipedia. Has proved very handy, recommended.
Radar Now. Displays live satellite weather images, very useful.

Messaging

SMS: Handcent SMS. best hands down SMS/MMS client, has pop up reply and quick-compose by holding down the search button. Also features voice to text.
IM: Meebo. Chat client that works with AIM/facebook/msn/gchat/etc
Forum reading: TapaTalk Pro. This is a dedicated forum reader and about 3000 forums are enabled in it. I mainly use it to read XDA and androidforums since the interface is much better than using a browser. Paid app.

Tools

File Syncing. DropBox. This app is amazing. You download it to your PC and it creates a folder that you can drop files into, and any other computer (or phone) that has it automatically syncs with it. I use this heavily for school, if I'm working on a paper I put the latest version in dropbox so I'm able to access it from my phone anywhere. If you use my referral code to sign up, we both get an additional 250 mb of space (on top of the 2gigs that comes free): https://www.dropbox.com/referrals/NTYxMzE5MjE5
File Management: Astro File Manager. Lets you backup apps to your sd card and navigate whats stored on the phone
Browser: Dolphin HD. Straight up beats the crap out of the stock browser. Will sync with your iGoogle bookmarks, as well. I also have the old version of the original Dolphin because the dev nixed the youtube video downloader because it violated googles terms of service. Dolphin HD is great, has add-ons (like bookmarks2sd which imports bookmarks, google services, and 'screen cut' which lets you save an image of a website to the sd card)
Security: Lookout Mobile. This badboy will scan downloaded files for viruses, and when you register on the website it has options to backup contacts and photos etc to it, and also has a GPS locater to find a missing/stolen phone.
Finance. Mint. Mint.com has come to android. For those of you who don't use www.mint.com, its a one stop website for your financial purposes. What you do is create an account, link all your credit cards, savings accounts, checking accounts, loans, mortgages, etc to it and when you log into the website, it will automatically fetch the information from all of them so you don't need to go to 10 different websites, it's all in one place. The app comes with a widget.
SO on the rag: My Days. Helps you keep track of your girls cycle so you know in advance of...surprises.
No Lock. Tired of swiping down the bar when you want access to your phone? This lets you wake up the phone by pressing the power button or volume rocker. Conveniently comes with a widget so you can quickly go from no lock to normal lock.

Program Management: Advanced Task Killer Free. Its good to have a task killer but you should NOT have it EVER kill everything your phone is running. The way Android (based off Linux) works is that the OS takes care of any task killing based on memory needs. You want ATK when you run into a situation where a particular app is being a PITA and you need to close it.
Tethering: PDAnet. An absolute must have. This lets you tether a computer to your phones data connection via usb or bluetooth without rooting your phone or paying your provider for phone-as-modem service. Free trial period then its $29, easiest purchase I've had to make.
Organization: FolderOrganizer Lite. This lets you go and group things together, like your apps for settings, camera, multimedia, etc and add a shortcut that will have a window pop up with the selected group in them. You can also group contacts like that for 'Friends' or 'Family' and whatnot. Its a great way to declutter. You can also customize the icons for any of them using one of the Icon packs on the market that are intended for OpenHome, but they still work for FolderOrganizer.
Export Contacts. Exports your contacts in a .csv file to your sd card.
SMS Backup and Restore. Self explanatory.
Wheres My Droid. If you have ever misplaced your phone while its on vibrate it can be a pain in the ass to find it. With this app, you send a text with a customizable code word/phrase to your phone and it will turn the ringer on and ring for 30/60/90/450 seconds.
Bluetooth On/Off. One-tap widget to turn bluetooth on and off, makes using my Jawbone2 earpiece very simple to use.
Contact Sender. A buddy needs your information or one of your friends? Open this up, select the information (choice of selection of name, number, address, etc) and who needs it and it will send the info.
More Icons Widget. Can't say enough about this one. Free version available, paid app is $1.99. It basically takes the space that one icon takes and lets you put four shortcuts in that same space. Thers a 1x1, 2x1, 3x1 and 4x1 widget. These shortcuts can be applications, bookmarks, call someone and even system toggles (bluetooth/wifi/gps/ringer on/off). This in conjunction with FolderOrganizer has cleared enough space on my home screens where I can basically fill it all with widgets.

Productivity

Calendar: Pure Cal Widget. Syncs with your google calendar, and the main draw is that it has widgets in every imaginable size to fit your needs for space. I like how it is just a straight listing of upcoming events instead of having to click a day on a calendar in order to see whats going on then. Also will sync with gTasks or Astrid. Paid app, $1.99. Many different skins and customizations for looks.
Documents To Go. I liked the free version that did limited word and excel, so I took advantage of the deal they had to get the
full version for $15 instead of the normal $30 for full word/excel/powerpoint/pdf support.
gTasks beta. Syncs with your google tasks. Dev nerfed the autosync after 30 days and offers the full version off a website and not on the android market since apparently if you are in in the Czech republic you can't receive payments from the market. Still a good app, even though that detail is annoying.

Camera

Camera Widget. Paid app that lets you use a widget to use the camera instead of opening the camera itself.
PicSay. Lets you edit photos, make captions, place graphics, pretty fun.
PixelPipe Lite. Lets you upload photos to a variety of websites, I personally use tinypic.
Qik. Lets you stream live video to a website from your phone.

Sports

SportsTap
Live Scores
ESPN News Widget

Robo Defense - One of the most addictive games I've ever played. Never thought I would be sitting in my room playing a game for 3 hours on my phone!
Hyperspace 3D
ThrottleCopter
Wixel - Full version lets you play online, very fun!

How To Take Screenshots of your phone (hat tip to 99CB & NPH)

Download USB Driver
Download SDK
Download Java SE Development Kit

*Run "SDK Setup.exe" and under "Available Packages" select the package for your OS version (1.5 for the Eris obviously) and the USB Driver package. Or just select them all.

*Turn on USB debugging on your phone: Settings > Applications > Development

*Connect phone, run ddms.bat from the \tools\ directory of the SDK.

*Select your phone from the box on the top left, then go to Device > Screen Capture.

The first time you connect the phone with USB Debugging mode on, you'll probably have to go into Device Manager and install the driver
from the USB Driver folder of the SDK that was downloaded.

Make sure your Java path is setup in Windows too. ie: "path c:\program files\java\jre_1.6\bin\"

Of course, if you are rooted, you can download ShootMe from the market and take easy easy screenshots just by 'flicking' your phone with your wrist. Very handy.

thx man, i appreciate your post

i just got Verizon's Droid Eris, which is essentially the exact same phone, so I'm definitely gonna have to check out some of the apps you suggested.
reb,
How long do you want to ignore this user?
yup yup. give em a try and see if they work for you and post what you find works best. My technically-challenged mother and brother both got the Hero after seeing what mine could do so I've basically done a lot of testing and researching so I can find the best stuff for them to use.
atmhockey

agree with everything you have there:

I use chompsms instead of Handscent (personal preference - both better than stock)

Keyring - great app that allows you to get rid of all those membership/rewards cards.

FXcamera - much better camera app than stock. But does not do video.
reb,
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Was hoping you'd see this thread, atmhockey. Downloaded FXCamera, looks solid to me. Wish the Hero had a flash for the camera, maybe the next gen will have one.

I am getting ready to try and root the phone so I can use it as a portable modem, and also get rid of the crapware that came with it that I don't want (nascar app, stock SMS client, etc). I found this how-to video that gives instructions: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7w_R4nozn4o

I am still sort of wary since when you do something like this, theres a chance of bricking it, but I am still going to try it sometime soon.
atmhockey
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I am still running regular ROM as well. Can't remember his name, but someone on here rooted his hero. Hopefully they will see this thread. I have always heard as long as you do one of those image backups you are good to go without worry of bricking.

I hope the second gen Hero comes to the US

I love this phone. Just installed the Phantom Skinz for the screen and the back. It looks GOOD. I used to have a hard case, but prefer the sleek look and thinness of the hero (I'll regret this when I drop it... but I was more concerned with scratches which is why I got the skin)

Is Dolphin really that much better? How so? Is it quicker than the default one?

I'll be bookmarking this thread hehe
atmhockey
How long do you want to ignore this user?
from what I can tell Dolphin is faster and I love the gestures features!

The gestures are pretty cool on dolphin. The tabbed browsing is nice as well, although it takes up a lot of screen space, so I just disabled the option to show the tab bar.

My wife has iPhone and I have the Hero.

Very similar, but I love my integration with google apps better and most of my apps are free fromw hat I can tell

I really haven't got into using the scenes and other features yet

Multi tasking is where the Hero wins imo...

minimizing pandora and having music play while I search the web/text/browse apps in the market/etc...

Just an example
reb,
How long do you want to ignore this user?
autosync with google contacts and calendar is one of the most convenient and best things about it.

Tip: If you are experiencing lag while you are typing out stuff on the keyboard, go into the options and turn off the 'vibrate' feedback that by default occurs when you hit a letter/number. Once I did that, typing became very crisp and fast.

Also, holding down the 'Home' button a couple seconds is like an ALT-TAB among programs.

Anybody know how to make the search widget (HTC or Android) work with dolphin? It opens up stock browser whenever I search. I've set dolphin as my default browser, is there something I'm missing?

Lloyd, I've noticed that too and I don't know a workaround for it. Thats probably my one beef with Dolphin. You mentioned that you disabled the tabs...all you have to do to hide the tabs is do a quick double-tap on the screen. Double-tap again to reveal them.
Lloyd Christmas
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Yeah, the bookmarks widget works just fine with dolphin, so its kind of annoying that the search widget won't.
atmhockey
How long do you want to ignore this user?
which search widget? I have the Google one (4x1 - one where you can type or speak) and it opens up dolphin for the search results

hitting the magnifying glass button on a home screen, atm. at least thats what I'm referring too...
Lloyd Christmas

I've tried both the HTC search widget and the Google one you just mentioned, they both open stock browser for some reson.
atmhockey
How long do you want to ignore this user?
ok...wasn't thinking about the hardware search button. That kind of sucks...because Dolphin tells Android that it wants to be the default browser.

reb,

I'm going to go into the market and leave it on my feedback for Dolphin so the developer is aware of it. It's something correctable, I'm fairly certain.

The thing that I am absolutely crazy about with my Droid eris is the level of customization that it provides...

From the first day I got it I customized it to exactly how I wanted it... but tonight I felt like doing a total overhaul on the 7 pages u can customize and I gotta say, it feels like a brand new phone and I absolutely love it!!!

Customization is huge for me and the Eris provides me with exactly what I need.

nguyenning

I think by UI, 99cent meant the 7 screens you're talking about.

It's actually very nice. That people app is awesome... the one where you put like 9 or so favorite contacts on and it has a picture of them (if you linked them to facebook) and by touching them, it either texts them or calls them (your choice on each person... I put texts for most of my friends and call for family/home lines of course)

Also just make sure you guys go into settings and programs and click on Weather and make sure it updates manually to save battery life significant. Same can be said about any program that has an "auto update" thing with it... like Facebook
atmhockey
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I am pretty sure you can't do screen shots unless your root your phone.

I have custom "work" and "personal" Sense Scenes set up and love switching between the two. I wish HTC would release Sense to open source so you could put it on any Android phone.

Ok:

Your phone doesn't need to be rooted to take screen shots, but you do need the Android SDK on your PC to do it.

I don't have any battery issues with my phone. I have Gmail set to sync, Facebook auto updating, weather auto updating, etc. I didn't turn off features I want just to conserve battery life. My battery still lasts me a full day. I'm probably gonna buy the Seidio 1750mAh battery soon though. They also have a 3500mAh battery as well.
