Our defense held these rams to 14 points
Sadly, that was enough to win. Just like the Aggies held Miami to 10 points, and that wasn't enough to win. Regardless of how elite your defense is, the offense still needs to get into the end zone.
FWIW Houston played all 4 of the teams that played yesterday, and they went 0-4 against them which tells the tale of this season. In those games Houston lost a total of 87-59, which is an average of 7 points per game. CJ was knocked out early in the Denver game so I included his stats 6-10 for 79 yards and Mills 17-30 for 137 yards with no TD's or turnovers.
I went through the stats of all 4 of those games and most of them are pretty close.
Houston QB's were 85-163 (52%) for 820 yards passing and a total of 6 turnovers lost including picks and fumbles.
Their opponents QB's were 72-124 (58%) for 810 yards and 6 turnovers.
The big disparity is Houston's QB's scored a total of 2 touchdowns in those four games and their opponents QB's scored 7.
Rushing tells a similar story.
Houston had a total of 295 yards rushing on 94 carries in those games for an average of 3.1 yards/carry.
Their opponents had 395 yards rushing on 113 carries for an average of 3.5 yards per carry.
Houston had no rushing touchdowns in those four games and their opponents had 3.
Houston had 2 TD's all passing in those 4 games, no rushing TD's and the other teams had a total of 10 split between passing and rushing.
Conversely, Houston kicked 13 FG's and their opponents kicked 3. Houston trades TD's for FG's because they can't get into the end zone. This is the exact same issue as last year so the transition from Slowik to Caley did not change the issue that this team does not score enough TD's to beat the best teams in the league.
If the team does not invest in improving the offensive line substantially it will be the same thing next season. It doesn't matter how many draft picks hit or free agents are brought in anywhere else, if they don't fix the offensive line, their success will be limited by offensive lack of TD production.
