Loved the JSN TD starting him out in the backfield. Why didn't we hire Kubiak? I don't remember the exact situation.

You also have to be fair and note that this game is in perfect weather not a snow storm. Wish we were in the NFC if for no other reason than to play in good weather in the playoffs.

We actually interviewed him and passed on him twice in the past 3 years

And his name is football royalty in this town

Everyone wanted a new system and Kubiak ran the same there as Slowick. Plus Kubiak looked pretty bad as the Saints OC

Watching Seattle and LA it's pretty clear we are not a football team like these two. Watching our offense it doesn't even feel like we're close, it feels like a huge gap. These are both real teams on both sides of the ball. I can really appreciate what they're both doing in comparison to what our team was this season, especially with the playoffs.

Yeah this feels like the de facto Super Bowl. Don't see NE being able to hang with either

The creativity used by McVay with motion is so fun to watch. Stuff I thought Caley would have brought over with him, but he did not. The TD to Williams with all of the eye candy confusing the Seattle defense was great.

To be fair, having Stafford vs Stroud makes a big difference in what you can do

you know I hadn't thought much about that before...but the AFC is the cold weather conference stadium-wise with the:

Bills, Patriots, Jets, Browns, Steelers, Bengals, Chiefs, Broncos, and Ravens -- nine

whereas the NFC has five -- Packers, Bears, Eagles, Giants, and Commanders

A whole lot of teams are kicking themselves for not winning this year. I don't think any team looks all very good.

This was extremely winnable

Sadly, that was enough to win. Just like the Aggies held Miami to 10 points, and that wasn't enough to win. Regardless of how elite your defense is, the offense still needs to get into the end zone.

FWIW Houston played all 4 of the teams that played yesterday, and they went 0-4 against them which tells the tale of this season. In those games Houston lost a total of 87-59, which is an average of 7 points per game. CJ was knocked out early in the Denver game so I included his stats 6-10 for 79 yards and Mills 17-30 for 137 yards with no TD's or turnovers.

I went through the stats of all 4 of those games and most of them are pretty close.
Houston QB's were 85-163 (52%) for 820 yards passing and a total of 6 turnovers lost including picks and fumbles.
Their opponents QB's were 72-124 (58%) for 810 yards and 6 turnovers.
The big disparity is Houston's QB's scored a total of 2 touchdowns in those four games and their opponents QB's scored 7.

Rushing tells a similar story.
Houston had a total of 295 yards rushing on 94 carries in those games for an average of 3.1 yards/carry.
Their opponents had 395 yards rushing on 113 carries for an average of 3.5 yards per carry.
Houston had no rushing touchdowns in those four games and their opponents had 3.

Houston had 2 TD's all passing in those 4 games, no rushing TD's and the other teams had a total of 10 split between passing and rushing.

Conversely, Houston kicked 13 FG's and their opponents kicked 3. Houston trades TD's for FG's because they can't get into the end zone. This is the exact same issue as last year so the transition from Slowik to Caley did not change the issue that this team does not score enough TD's to beat the best teams in the league.

If the team does not invest in improving the offensive line substantially it will be the same thing next season. It doesn't matter how many draft picks hit or free agents are brought in anywhere else, if they don't fix the offensive line, their success will be limited by offensive lack of TD production.

Informative. Thanks.

And I agree with everything you say. Fixing the line has to be the no. 1 priority by a mile (with adding a RB being the second priority). And I hope they go after some established guys in free agency. At this point, I just do not trust our ability to evaluate and draft college OLs.

Agree, we need a mix of both. Bringing in season vets who know the system and keeping an influx of new talent (at least 1 oline in the top 3 picks of the draft).

Overall, we have to be more consistent when we want to run the ball. We don't have to be a "running team", but we have to have opposing teams respect our running game. This will take pressure off of CJ (or anyone else) and allow the offense to function so much better. Watching Seattle last night, they didn't have a good night running the ball against the Rams, but they were very effective when they needed to be allowing Darnold to have a season high in passing yards.

the Texans certainly kick a ton of field goals

Fairbairn tied for 1st in the NFL with 48 FG attempts in 15 games

(Wright attempted 4 FG's when he subbed for injured Fairbairn)

so 52 FG attempts for the season -- an average over 3 per game

-----

Thompson tied for 4th in the NFL with 72 punts in 17 games

it appears the Texans don't go for 4th downs very often

digging further...

the Texans ranked 31st in 4th down attempts during the 2025 season

just 19 attempts in 17 games

converted 12 of 19

the bad teams in the league tend to be at the top of the 4th down rankings...because they are trailing in the 2nd half

but the Bills ranked #8; Rams #11; Jaguars #12; Patriots #20

Totally agree, Seattle could have been more effective in the run game but they just lost Charbonnet so Walker had take on more of a load than he's used to. I think they were evenly split during the season in terms of carries but Charbonnet is also their short yardage back so he had more TD's this season. But good teams find a way so Darnold had to take it up a notch. It was a lot of fun to watch him and Stafford, who had damn near identical stats last night, fight tooth and nail to try to get to the Super Bowl.

Darnold: 25-36 (69%) for 346 yards / 3 TD's / no turnovers / 82.9 QBR
Stafford: 22-35 (63%) for 374 yards / 3 TD's / no turnovers / 81.5 QBR

Had McVay not been a little careless with their timeouts in the second half Stafford would have had more of a chance. Trying to go 93 yards in 25 seconds with no timeouts and you have to have a TD is pretty much impossible in any game, let alone with a trip to the Super Bowl on the line. They picked up 23 yards on their first play, then they spike it with 10 seconds left. Even if Nacua made it out of bounds on the next completion they still would have relied on a hail mary from their own 49 yard line.

That's a direct reflection of the lack of running game. No confidence.

I wonder if anyone else will take a chance on Mixon or if he gets blacklisted. He's certainly not ever playing here again. If he was healthy and played this season who knows how things would have turned out.

So I started that national passtime of completely pointless mock drafts. The interesting thing I've found is that there are a lot of QBs in this draft that were thought to be high picks at one point in their college career. I wonder if we'll take a flier on someone like an Allar or a Klubnik in the 4th round (if they're available)?

I think Freeling's stock skyrockets as we get closer to the draft, really talented player, potential franchise tackle

Miller is the monster on the interior that we need

Tiernan was sort of the best player available here. Good upside and can either play tackle or guard (and possibly play guard at an elite level)

Price gives us a sparkplug out of the backfield who can also contribute on ST

Stowers gives Stroud a weapon at TE.. I think his best football is ahead of him as he's still not played a ton of TE but I love the upside as a recieving threat.

Rodriguez was a monster at Tech and plays with a mentality that DeMeco would love.

Dell's health is a question mark and Kirk might be gone. Burks fits in nicely in the slot. Big time playmaking ability.

Benny is another big interior DL who would be a project but could contribute down the road.

Thoughts?
