His momentum took him into the end zone. For plays like that, it's ruled as forward progress. Doesn't have to be because of contact with a defender like if you're on offense.

Again, not saying I agree with it. But it's the rule. And it's not common but also not rare. Hell. Saw it in a college game last night. Can't remember which at the moment.

But, to somewhat defend the rule, and as a counterpoint. He had the ball outside the end zone and went into the end zone. So if what you are saying is how it was ruled (he retreated to the end zone and re-established himself as a runner) you'd really be making an argument that it should be a safety…..it's just a weird play and treated differently than any other situation (offense, special teams, etc)
