Wow, I didn't expect them moving that fast. But, if this is the move then they have to bring in someone with some heavy experience don't they? Someone who could help mold CJ and support DeMeco in his decision making?
Yeah don't think they go the route of a guy who has never called plays AGAIN. Slowik was a bad choice to begin with, Ryans has a chance to get it right this time. If Ryans goes that route again, he is setting himself up for failure again.AustinCountyAg said:
Jerrod has never called plays his entire coaching career. Not sure if he's the guy to handle those duties with this caliber of a team. I'd personally prefer someone with more experience. I think he'd be a good option as being a co-coordinator with someone else.
A major change in Houston: The #Texans are moving on from offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik, sources say, after an up-and-down offensive season.

Despite reaching the divisional round, coach DeMeco Ryans hopes for more. OL coach Chris Strausser is also out. pic.twitter.com/UYOdNiADAx

Yeah the fact that that Rapaport tweet says Demeco hopes for more kinda points to the fact that Demeco has higher expectations and I'm not sure another inexperienced play caller fulfills those expectations.
Like the move by Demeco. It's complete opposite of how this organization has operated in the past. And that's a good thing.
This is great news, but if he's going to hold his coaches to a standard he needs to do so with the players as well. Bryant needs to be gone because of pushing the special teams coach, period. I do think CJ will make it an attractive OC job but there's other teams with coaches that are also going to need an OC as well so they need to hit the ground running.Ag_07 said:

Regarding the draft, have we already discussed if the OL is our priority? With Strausser getting the boot I'm left wondering if he was the main issue or the talent on our OL was the problem.
I've seen a few places mentioning the Rams coaches, Josh McCown, but Chip Kelly is a new name.Quote:
Offensive line coach Chris Strausser is also out, and assistant offensive line coach Cole Popovich's contractexpired.
Many in the building thought they'd have one of the best offenses in the league.
But Slowik's offense never lived up to the hype, never made adjustments or improvements.
Ryans was noticeably frustrated, indicating that the offense needed to improve. Quarterback C.J. Stroud, as well as other offensive players, had also expressed some frustration behind the scenes, and pondered whether Slowik would return the following season.
But ultimately the final decision rested on Ryans, who felt the Texans had a roster ready to compete for a Super Bowl, two league sources told the Chronicle.
The rest of the offensive staff will be evaluated when the new offensive coordinator is hired. So Popovich could return.
There are no immediate front runners for the job, but quarterbacks coach Jerrod Johnson was once thought to be a logical replacement. Other hot names include Ohio State offensive coordinator Chip Kelly, Los Angeles Rams offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur, who also happens to be close with Slowik, Rams passing game coordinator Nick Caley, former Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy, and Vikings quarterbacks coach Josh McCown, who was once a serious candidate in 2022 to be the Texans' head coach.

How about Jimbo for OC?

Very true, but I would worry about the same thing that I think killed Slowick, lack of expereince with play calling. Overall I think Slowick installed a good offense, but as a coordinator he didn't understand how to keep up with the needed adjustments and more importantly, he never seemed to have a good in game feel. Both years there were multiple games where the offense would be in a rhythm and we would just pull some un-needed insane play out that would completely kill every bit of momentum we had.canadiaggie said:IrishAg said:

McCown as HC would have been awful but as OC is intriguing. Worked magic with Darnold
I'd take this guy just for the endless string of Dodgeball gifs it would weaponize.IrishAg said:Quote:

Ha! But see above, LaFleur (younger brother of Packers head coach Matt LaFluer) would potentially be a really good fit here.Jose Cruuuuuuuuuuuuz said:I'd take this guy just for the endless string of Dodgeball gifs it would weaponize.IrishAg said:Quote:

I agree 100%, that's why I liked the idea of Mike LaFleur as he's been learning from McVay for the last 2 years.Silent For Too Long said:
I kind of hope they either go away from the Shanahan offense or find someone who has a battle plan to innovate it drastically.
The entire league seems to be catching up to it and you need someone who can stay ahead of the curve.
DeMeco Ryans when talking about why the run game worked vs KC mentions “the double teams” (DUO) & how “that scheme fit us well” (GAP scheme).

I called for more gap scheme all year and wonder why it took Bobby Slowik so long to adapt to his personnel. Duo, power, counter, trap,… https://t.co/quoNwel29K pic.twitter.com/QfdZ1gtPWf
