Just saw on Twitter that DeMeco is defending the hit. He kind of has a point. Can't get the link to work but I'll post a few quotes from Meco:

"With the entire Azeez situation, we stand behind Azeez and everything that came from that,"

"When you're a defender, a lot is on the defender. Whether it's on the sideline or whether it's on the quarterback, you don't know what a guy's thinking. You don't know if a guy's standing up and he's continuing to run, you don't know. And then you get a late slide and you hit the guy"

"It's unfortunate that Trevor got hurt, and I hope Trevor's ok, but also if you're sliding you have to get down, and if you're getting out of bounds then get out of bounds, because that rule is there to protect the quarterbacks. We want our quarterbacks to be safe in the league. So we just have to be safe and if we're sliding, make sure we're keeping our heads down"

"Azeez hits the guy but their sideline overreacts and it turns into a melee,' he continued. 'It wasn't our guys, their team overreacted and pushed our guy, dragged our guy to the sidelines. That's uncalled for.'"

Good for DeMeco. The instant reaction by the announcers and the Jags was way over the top. The Jag players were ready to kill Azeez, if not for the intervention of his teammates. The hit was rough but not the worst hit of all time. Lawrence's head snapping back to the turf was unfortunate, but he didn't hit him helmet to helmet.

I don't blame any players for reacting that way after that hit.

Any team would've done the same thing.

If you look at trajectory of his body coming into the hit and the fact that he followed through with the forearm shiver, I have hard time to believing this was an unavoidable hit type situation as it seems to show he was anticipating a slide. Even if he might not have been able to avoid all contact, he certainly could have mitigated some of the severity of it.

Demeco is dumb.

Defending that is just showing why this team is so undisciplined.

He led with his forearm which had a brace. He knew exactly what he was doing. You don't tackle with your forearm.

Slow motion has a way of distorting the reality of the situation. Watch it in full speed.

While it does suck, if he goes high, he's ejected, if he goes low (cuts) - ejected. Azeez is an undersized guy, he goes for the legs. When the legs drop to the ground he's already engaged in trying to tackle Lawrence's legs and goes forearm first into his head. The forearm being, what I think as his reaction to seeing the slide, directed and impacting Lawrence's shoulder first.

Put this another way, if he hesitates to tackle him, Trevor fakes the slide and keeps going (legal) he could split the defenders and go for another 10-15 yards. You can't watch these things in slow-mo and make these decisions. The difference in timing between the supposed initiation of the tackle and the slide is milliseconds and our reactions aren't that good.

Slow mo has made the exciting plays more exciting but it distorts the reality of in game decisions.

3 game suspension. I assume he will appeal and hopefully get it reduced that seems steep based on previous suspensions.

Looks like it might have been less if he just left the field after being ejected. Doubt they will bring it down with an appeal.

Bring it down, no. But it could defer the suspension. Big thing to weigh is that our next three games are the toughest stretch with a winnable Tennessee game as the 4th. If you appeal and play against the Dolphins and Chiefs, you risk the 3rd game being the playoff game (if there is one).

It's a bad hit, deserves a suspension IMO but the only reason it's 3 games is because it's a quarterback that got hit. Had the same hit happened to any other player I do not believe it's a 3 game suspension. He has a chance for the appeal to shorten it to 2 games is my guess.
redag06

3 games is because of being a repeat offender.

Kind of irrelevant. Odds of any other offensive player coming in and sliding like that are probably less than .01%. So impossible to say it's just because a qb (as in they care more about QBs) when it only occurred because QBs are really the only ones who give themselves up like that. Obvious select situations where running out the clock could apply.

That said, I agree the suspension is bs.

Entirely too much, especially considering I can't find any info of any previous suspensions through a quick google machine

The players union will get it down to 2, which will mean he misses Dolphins & Chiefs, and returns for Ravens. That's a tiny silver lining in that he'll be well rested for the super short week game on Christmas against the team with the most dangerous offense and deadliest running QB.

Gives the team 2 weeks to scheme up how to not have him against Tua/Achane and Mahomes.

The more I watch the replay, the more I think he was definitely going after Lawrence's injured area. But I also don't really have a problem with that. Was hoping more of the A&M defenders would try rolling over on Ewers' taped ankle Saturday.

At this point, I suppose I'm on the wrong side of the generation gap of safety vs. playing the game. I remember the year the Oilers signed Chuck Cecil to bring some much needed swagger and anger to their defense and he lit up Steve Young on Christmas Day with a shot that knocked him out for a key stretch where the 49ers had to bring in Steve Bono. I'm not advocating helmet to helmet kill shots, but the game is supposed to be hard-hitting and violent. Lawrence was intent on running as far as he could. If they want to protect the quarterback, he should wear flags and just make him un-tackable all the time.

Only cowards see hurting the opponents as a legit way to play a game. Any game.

The NFL doesn't reduce the suspensions very often. I see this one sticking. Repeat offender, he was just fined for a late hit LAST week. The league isn't reducing this.

Yes. Rules make it impossible to be a physical defender. You have to run full speed at someone and then tippy-toe at the last second so you don't hurt their feelings when you're tackling them.
