Randy Moss and Mike are not comparable, and I love Mike.

Through their first 10 seasons Evans has more targets, more catches, a higher catch %, fewer drops, averages 0.8 less yards per reception and has about 200 fewer yards. Other than touchdowns they are actually remarkably comparable, statistically speaking. And the big touchdowns difference is in large part due to that 10th year, where Moss set the 23 TD record. Through 9 years Moss only had 12 more touchdowns.
It's not apples to apples. Moss played in an era where running the ball was way more prominent.

In his rookie season of 1998, there were 20 guys with at least 1,000 yards rushing, and Terrell Davis had 2,000.
Of those 20, 4 were at least 1,400 and 10 were at least 1,200.

In 2024, 12 guys had 1,000 yards rushing, and only CMC was over 1,200. Eight of the 12 were between 1,005-1,049.

Moss led the league in WR touchdowns 5 times. 2024 was Mike's first year to do so.

Mike is a really good player. Moss was the most feared WR in the game for a decade.

I agree in theory, but it it a true view? Bell cow backs used to be the norm. Now you see more shared carries.
Overall though, stats aren't the determining factor here with Evans, value is. Look at it this way, CJ Stroud was 8th in passing yards and 14th in passing TDs this year, even though he missed 2 games. If we could just add in Evans stats he would have been first in both categories even missing 2 games. That would be great, and let's assume that Evans doesn't take a whole lot of the production away from someone else, so CJ does get to the top in both categories. Is that worth signing Evans?

Where I've been trying to go with this, is that CJ was in the upper half of total QB stats across the board in his rookie season missing 2 games, and missing one of his top targets for half the season. So just through natural progression, health, and getting Tank Dell back his production will increase next year. Mike Evans only would raise his overall passing stats by 25 to 30% at most? Is that maximum increase of maybe even around a third of the passing production worth close to tripling the salary pool for WRs on this team? Not to mention taking up over 10% of the salary cap on this team?

CJ hit all of those numbers with his highest paid receiver being Robert Woods at 6 million a year. So the question will be is an investment in Mike Evans going to help the team overall enough that it will be greater than the loss of funds for other positions on the team? And I don't think Nick or DeMeco will think it will be if Evans is at 20 or more million a year.

I recall hearing CJ was top 5 against zone defenses, bottom 5 against man-to-man.

Is that reflective of the QB, the receivers, the playset, or a combination of all three?

Just wondering what it will take to improve against the man-to-man.

Combination of all three, but by the end of the year I'm guessing it was mostly the lack of receivers as much as anything. Think about how much time Dell, Woods, Brown, and Shultz missed in the second half of the year. I also think people started to get film on CJ which is a natural progression during his rookie season.

We're also getting into mock draft season. Looks like most pundits agree with us, in regards to help in the trenches.

Kiper:

Daniel Jeremiah (NFL Network - former scout)

Bucky Brooks (NFL Network - former scout)

Will McFadden (SI)

Zierlein hasn't put one out there yet, CBS sports has some, but at least one doesn't even have us in the correct spot after updating his draft yesterday so not counting them right now either.

What today has really taught me is that the Texans need to sign Randy Moss.

He was in that commercial looking to unretire.

Considering where we are drafting, we need to fill our critical needs in free agency. We don't want to be in a situation where we are hoping for a guy at a specific position being available when we pick. To me, that means targeting DL and DB in free agency.

Resign Rankins, Greenard, Cashman, Schultz, like Singletary. I'm iffy on Nelson but he could slide back to safety.

Target DT (Wilkins or Madubuike) and 1-2 higher end DBs (there's a bunch).

That would give us flexibility in the draft. There's a bunch of WRs, so there could be good value available. Or if there's an abnormal run on WRs, then maybe an OL, DL or DB slides. At 23, I'm more confident in landing a 3rd WR, 3rd CB, S, 5th DL, or IOL rather than someone who needs to start right away at a big money position.

IOL usually the best one has not been taken at 23. We could get a stud guard or center at 23 I'm sure.

Oh I agree completely, dline is the number one target in free agency, but I think they would do a double dip with the draft too. I like the idea of the Penn state end Robinson or the Illinois DT Newton, both are projects that would be best served coming off the bench and learning, but have a lot of talent.

I'd be fine with taking BPA at 23. I can't think of a position other than LT and QB that we would not have a need at.

We were part of the final 8 standing. We don't have a need at every position. Come on.

Both lines are definitely a need. The rest is nice to haves.

Yep. I think we should still resign Rankins though in case Newton isn't there. Plus, Wilkins can play outside in big formations and we need at least 4-5 DTs anyways.

My 1st rounder pipe dream pick is Brock Bowers.

I think due to his position he could fall although unlikely to fall to the Texans at 23 and even then I doubt they take a TE with that pick but it would awesome to draft him and have the TE position locked up for the foreseeable future. Dude has top 10 talent
The Porkchop Express

Someone will over reach on Bowers. Jerry Jones would be my most likely candidate. If Al Davis was still alive, he'd be #2.

TEs are similar to RBs. No reason to take early.

I would disagree with this. If there's a TE who's a freak athlete that you think can be a match up nightmare, that's a huge weapon, an awesome safety valve for your QB, and well worth taking early if you think he's that guy. What Kelce provides KC, Gronk provided NE, etc was huge. If you can add something like that, you do it.

IMO, the issue with RBs is the short shelf life which makes a second (more expensive) contract very risky. That's why I would be hesitant to take a RB too early (unless you do it with the understanding that you'll likely just let them walk after their rookie deal). No such issue with a TE.
Ag_07

Not only that but look what rookie TEs were able to do this year. La Porta, McBride, Kincaid were all rookies that proved to be very effective weapons and produce at a very good clip right out of the gate.

If Bowers fell and was there when the Texans pick I'd have no issue whatsoever with them taking him.

I think the thing with TEs is a freak athlete is nice but not the thing. But they have to be very intelligent. Kelce and Gronk are great athletes but they just know where the holes are and where their qbs will look to throw them the ball. Andrews is the same way.

Kittle and Pitts are both great athletes. They are "hot n cold" players because they lack the knack for knowing how to always be open.

I know he is a WR, but look at Adam Thielen's success this past season. Guy got open, but was not a great athlete.

I think our difference is I don't assume any specific player will be re-signed. Right now our roster for guys under contract who played this year is something like:

  • QB - Stroud, Keenum, Mills
  • RB - Pierce
  • FB - Beck
  • WR - Woods, Matchie, Dell, Collins, Hutch
  • TE - Jordan, Saubert
  • OL - Howard, Mason, Green, Green, Scruggs, Patterson, Tunsil

  • DL - Collins, Hinish, Sanders, Anderson
  • LB - Harris, To'oTo'o
  • CB - Stingley
  • S - Ward, Pitre

I appreciate we will re-sign some of the FAs, but right now there are a lot of needs and if you can draft a rookie with promise on a smaller cap deal, you should do it.

You kind of proved my point. Multiple TEs are used on teams. There are several that can help out pro teams and are pretty similar.

Looks like Canales to Carolina so that leaves Atlanta, Washington & Seattle left with Vrabel and Belicheck still out there. Might be able to hang on to Slowik.

I don't see bill going anywhere without a qb. He may sit out a year

Commanders might be the one to watch. Hired a GM from SF that has a lot of familiarity with Slowik.

And agreed, second interviews seem to point to him being out the door.

Maybe, keep in mind there are multiple coordinators still in the playoffs that are in contention for jobs. they might want to wait until they can talk more with those guys.

I think the Commanders are the one I'm most worried about. Atlanta is going big game hunting and don't think they would settle. Seattle just seems like they want a seasoned coach. I could see the commanders trying to make a move with a young QB. Overall, I hope Jerrod Johnson waits to get a promotion until after Slowick figures out what he's doing.

I agree that if he fell I wouldn't have much issues with the Texans taking him, as he would count as a unique talent at a non-critical position. Which is what you're usually looking for at the end of the first round (since all of the unique talents at critical positions are usually gone by now). Taking him in the top 15 I think would be tough to swallow.

I can't believe Vrabel won't get another job unless he wants to take a year off.

Also could be some jobs opening up in the next few weeks.

Andy Reid is rumored to want to retire, so either that or domino effect.
