This makes it seem like watson and his team think the ruling will go in their favor, why else ask the nfl to stand by the judges decision?

If the decision is appealed by either party, doesn't it go to Goodell to decide the punishment? Some speculation that the PA are trying to set a precedent that an independent arbitrator and not Goodell should decide the punishment.

I doubt either side knows where the judge is leaning currently. But the PA would love it if punishments like this were out of Goodell's hands. Even if the punishment is tougher than they wanted for this individual case. As recently as last week I read they were automatically going to appeal. One of two things happened, they either got word initially that it was going to be harsher than they wanted, or the PA has thought about the wider implications of any punishment levied by a third party vs Goodell. I have doubts that they both heard it was going to be more than they wanted and then also a more palatable length within a weeks time. The PA moving decisions like this away from Goodell is way more valuable than any specific punishment levied against Watson.

Reports are indicating that the decision will be given today. But the only punishment that can't be appealed by either side is a zero game suspension. All the speculation I've seen is 8-12 games. Recent suspensions of Hopkins for 6 games for "trace amounts" of PED's and a full season for Calvin Ridley for gambling provide some context but it's hard to really predict what's going to happen without true precedent.

different policies.

PED has set suspensions in place.

gambling is closer, but also a different policy. not the "personal conduct" policy at issue here.

6 games likely less than browns thought when trade made.

So question is does nfl appeal it and then decide in its own? They gave a guy who gambled 1k on some parlays a whole year but give a guy who settled 20 cases 6 games? Think media would be all over that

Six games also feels low enough to draw Goodell's ire. The NFL wanted a year/indefinite, I'm sure there was a number less than that they would have considered acceptable, but six doesn't feel like it was within that range. Who knows that this point? If it's going to be appealed I doubt they wait long to start that process.

Only 6 games for a guy that had 24 women accuse him of sexual assault.

What a joke

I wonder if the missed year had anything to do with just 6 games for Watson.

Also NFL has to appeal

Because there's no way they can just lay down and quietly accept a 6 game suspension.

He got paid the entire year. If Goodell let's it end up being only 6 games, the NFL has lost a major PR battle especially given MLB's punishment for Trevor Bauer.

Somewhere, there's a woman's rights group about to unleash a holy war on the Browns and DeShaun, and it couldn't happen to a more selfish jerk.

I think this shows how poorly a job did presenting their case. Maybe they just assumed they should get their way since that's what they are used to.

But Buzbee made Watson look like an absolute fool from the deposition clips I've seen.

What a joke

Meanwhile calvin ridley has to sit out a year for "betting" on games

Goodell is going to get crucified if he doesnt add some more games to this suspension

The NFL doesn't have to appeal. I think it's in the best interest of the NFL to appeal. They need to to do anything possible to make it appear they care.

he's been "crucified" before. how did that turn out for him?

he and nfl will be fine. this was third party agreed to by both that put the punishment in place.

agree its probably in best interest for Goodell to appeal to Goodell, but he wont make it significantly worse.

need to see the reasoning in the opinion before can really say.

Also this means Watson will be active on December 4, when the Browns play at the Texans. I'd like to see the contents of all the signs that are confiscated by security at the door welcoming him home.

Looks like the NFL has 3 days to appeal the decision so we won't have to wait long to see what they're going to do.

If fans start thinking the games are rigged based on player bets, they might stop watching. It has been proven time and time again people will keep watching players that abuse women.

Players betting on games is a much bigger threat to the success of the NFL.

Per this excerpt, a key point to the Judge was that the conduct was non-violent.

Watson is a sicko with a weird traveling "masseuse" fetish, but wasn't out raping people.

You don't think there is a distinction between what he did and holding them down and trying to stick it in?

Of course there's a difference. That's not what I said and you know it.

But someone out there raping people is getting indefinitely suspended and jail time. Watson got a slap on the wrist six games. There's a whole lot of room between those two and his pathological behavior was such a pattern than I think it should be way more severe.

Here's my take. 6 games is fine. But because the way the Browns structured his contract, he should miss the first 6 games of each year that his contract runs.
Seven and three are ten, not only now, but forever. There has never been a time when seven and three were not ten, nor will there ever be a time when they are not ten. Therefore, I have said that the truth of number is incorruptible and common to all who think. — St. Augustine

This Judge also did not say his actions were "okay", but you know that.

Watson's pathological behavior is to do what? Try to get hand jobs from women that travel the country giving massages to people that find them on Instagram? Excuse me for not thinking he is in the same category as a Ray Rice or Greg Hardy.
