I'm assuming Hopkins will not be reporting, right? We were told this was only about money and Hop refused to play without a $25 million/year deal. Well, he still doesn't have one.

Thats going to be really hard to do when the national media constantly points out how poor BOB has been as a GM. Just because you don't want to hear, doesn't mean people won't constantly talk about. You will probably have to take your own advice and just get over the complaining.

That's why you don't listen to the national media on anything. They make money on being opinionated and drawing eyes/ears, not being right. Complaining isn't going to bring Hopkins back, the team is going to be fine without him.

If anything, I view the Texans with bemusement now. Sold my season tickets to a buddy for as long as he wants them and when he doesn't want them, I'll turn them in. And I used to live and die every Sunday with their games. Now, I'll just as likely be on the golf course. So, I still root for them but I'm nowhere near the diehard fan I used to be.

But the point of my post was that we were given a very specific reason for the trade: Hop was never going to suit up without a new, huge deal and this forced the Texans' hand. In light of what Hop would be giving up, I thought this was ridiculous at the time and said so. Now that training camp is approaching I think it's worth noting whether the reason we were given for the trade holds water.

And it's also worth noting for another reason. The margin for error between winning and losing is extremely small in the NFL. A couple bad deals can derail any chance of success (as well as unfortunate injuries, etc.). So, while Hop is gone, why he's gone and what we got in return is still relevant because it has a huge impact on whether this team has a realistic chance to reach the Super Bowl in the foreseeable future.

Depth we signed from PSquad towards the end of the season. Likely he wasn't going to make the team, so I wonder if this is some sort of salary guarantee?

If it is, that is pretty genius.

I think the formal/official story is he has had family impacted and wants to opt out.

The opt out for non high risk, as I understand it, is $150k salary for the year and the contract for that year gets pushed out 1 year. So the 2020 contract is now in effect for 2021. Suppose if you're a player who is in the final year of a contract or doesn't expect to make the roster, assuming unlikely to make another team, you can effectively get 2 years w/ a contract.

I have also read that the $150K or $350K this year comes out of your contract for next year...but I wasn't able to find the official reference.

Edit - check that...only the $150K would need to be re-paid

Wow I can see that being a cluster next year.

I doubt that'll stick. The NFL is often tone deaf, but its a terrible look to make someone pay back $150k when they get cut in training camp the following year. Reminds me of that time that Vikings player got fined for missing practice to arrange his mom's funeral.

Patdstat got convicted of sexual relations of two minors when he was a high school teacher/coach. Changed his name from Patrick Colon to Patrick Starr and started covering the Texans. His past came out when his current employer did a background check recently and the story has come out. Texans PR even commented on the story.

I don't think that's really news. Someone a few years ago on one of our own season threads here brought this up. I went to college with Pat at TLU and knew him decently well. Never knew this story though.

I'm hoping that the level of interest expressed on this thread is indicative of the overall interest in the Texans.

I just don't think there's much to talk about. The first game isn't for another month, basically. Normally we're inundated with training camp talk and pre-season games. I didn't realize training camp was going on at all until I stumbled upon Hard Knocks this past week.

Damn. Time to add his name to the Charles Spencer All-Stars - Texans that showed a small glimpse of potential before suffering a series of injuries and never playing a down again.

after the trade I decided to stop following the Texans until Obrien is gone. Going to follow Dhop and the cards this year and enjoy what should be an exciting offense. I rooted for the oilers from age 4 until the minute they left for Tennessee and was there for every Texans home game in 2002, but Obrien has broken my will to watch. This will be the first time I've ever not watched the Texans on purpose.

In true Texans' fashion, Deshaun Watson's people have spelled his last name wrong on the author page of his forthcoming book. All hail Deshaun Waton.

It is, John Harris is doing his typical sunshine pumping analysis by giving daily reports. Here is day 9:

Apparently Couttee has a stress fracture in his foot, wouldn't be surprised if that wraps up his Texans career.

4th round, but BOBs track record in the 4th is just as bad as the 3rd.
