Putting this contract into terms that everyone can easily understand, the NFL is the guy telling ESPN to squeal like a pig in Deliverance.
So the next time you hear someone criticize ESPN talent as being overpaid, remember that ESPN's problem isn't talent costs, it's these bloated television contracts which are costing them billions a year in losses. Every hour that ESPN airs of the Raiders-Texans game on Saturday will cost it $25 million. From a business perspective, Raiders-Texans, which is a dumpster fire of a game, is actually a dumpster fire of burning cash for ESPN.
Remember when everyone thought the Texans made a mistake signing Brock Osweiler for $37 million guaranteed? At least the Texans get Osweiler for 32 games at that rate. Hell, that's just over a million a game. ESPN is going to lose $75 million just televising one of Osweiler's games.
We need to update the worst free agent deals of all time. Move over Dan Snyder, your signing of Albert Haynesworth looks like a bargain compared to ESPN's signing of the NFL wild card game.

Keep the political gossip off of that channel and the ratings will climb like crazy. Get Stephen Smith's race baiting ass off of the air and show a few game replays instead.
Less gossip commentary and more sports analysis.

If the NFL was nice they would throw ESPN a bone, such as giving them the right to flex games to Monday night. But knowing the NFL, that will not happen. Since the rating declines have been much more for the Thursday night and Monday night packages, NBC, CBS and ESPN may pass on the Thursday and Monday night packages. The NFL can always move those the the NFL network, but it will be hard to get the cable/satellite companies to swallow a big increase for the NFL Network.
Don't quote me, but I thought that it cost ESPN around a $1.50 per month per subscriber for the NFL package. People keep saying that sports TV money is going to go away, but then you see a deal like the Big 10 deal with FOX. Providers will pay for quality like the Big 10 and SEC. The Big 12 should be nervous, and next time the MAC may pay ESPN for Tuesday night MACtion.

You're right about the BDF. But there's no way to flex games to the next day. Bad enough to announce game times a week or two in advance... moving a game to the next day on short notice would cause a riot.

College game times are set a week in advance all the time. Seems like after week 6 or so you could start flexing Monday night games with a weeks notice

ESPN needs to put the National Championship game and maybe a few NFL Sunday games back on ABC.
It would be impossible to put a Sunday NFL game on ABC. CBS & FOX have exclusive agreements by conference for all Sunday afternoon games and NBC has Sunday night.Good Aggie Hunting said:

A bit of that has to be no one wanting to advertise during a **** game.

It's a battle between Matt McGloin/Connor Cook and Tom Savage/Brock Osweiler for the right to advance to play the New England Patriots and be executed on live television.
