Putting this contract into terms that everyone can easily understand, the NFL is the guy telling ESPN to squeal like a pig in Deliverance.

So the next time you hear someone criticize ESPN talent as being overpaid, remember that ESPN's problem isn't talent costs, it's these bloated television contracts which are costing them billions a year in losses. Every hour that ESPN airs of the Raiders-Texans game on Saturday will cost it $25 million. From a business perspective, Raiders-Texans, which is a dumpster fire of a game, is actually a dumpster fire of burning cash for ESPN.

Remember when everyone thought the Texans made a mistake signing Brock Osweiler for $37 million guaranteed? At least the Texans get Osweiler for 32 games at that rate. Hell, that's just over a million a game. ESPN is going to lose $75 million just televising one of Osweiler's games.

We need to update the worst free agent deals of all time. Move over Dan Snyder, your signing of Albert Haynesworth looks like a bargain compared to ESPN's signing of the NFL wild card game.
LOL.

At least they have an excuse this time... last pick this week, I'd guess. In the meantime, keep showing the '11 A&M game and '06 Rose Bowl on your $300M LHN. HUGE ratings...

One would think Disney would fix the **** show that is ESPN / ABC management. The rest of their company seems to be a money-making machine.

Keep the political gossip off of that channel and the ratings will climb like crazy. Get Stephen Smith's race baiting ass off of the air and show a few game replays instead.

Less gossip commentary and more sports analysis.

If the NFL was nice they would throw ESPN a bone, such as giving them the right to flex games to Monday night. But knowing the NFL, that will not happen. Since the rating declines have been much more for the Thursday night and Monday night packages, NBC, CBS and ESPN may pass on the Thursday and Monday night packages. The NFL can always move those the the NFL network, but it will be hard to get the cable/satellite companies to swallow a big increase for the NFL Network.

Don't quote me, but I thought that it cost ESPN around a $1.50 per month per subscriber for the NFL package. People keep saying that sports TV money is going to go away, but then you see a deal like the Big 10 deal with FOX. Providers will pay for quality like the Big 10 and SEC. The Big 12 should be nervous, and next time the MAC may pay ESPN for Tuesday night MACtion.

You're right about the BDF. But there's no way to flex games to the next day. Bad enough to announce game times a week or two in advance... moving a game to the next day on short notice would cause a riot.

Providers are for the most part losing their asses on those deals. For sure a lot of the college money goes away in the future and possibly before the current inflated deals are up.

College game times are set a week in advance all the time. Seems like after week 6 or so you could start flexing Monday night games with a weeks notice

Different time on the same day, OK. Staying an extra night.. not an option for many fans. There's no feasible way to move a Sunday game to Monday. Unless you want to piss off the people who paid to attend...

ESPN needs to put the National Championship game and maybe a few NFL Sunday games back on ABC.

Why would they do that? Not to mention NBC has the Sunday night game.

It would be impossible to put a Sunday NFL game on ABC. CBS & FOX have exclusive agreements by conference for all Sunday afternoon games and NBC has Sunday night.

Makes no sense

I'd still like to see explanation of how the $25mm is calculated.

25 million people watched the Chiefs versus Texans game in that timeslot last year.

Even with the crappy matchup of Texans versus Raiders, a lot more people are going to watch than are watching most everything else on TV.

Screw ESPN... It's not even a shell of the network it used to be.

Used to love ESPN.. Sportscenter was the best show on TV.
Sportscenter doesn't even exist anymore.
The morning sportscenter is unwatchable and is trying to become E News or something.
Even the SVP sportscenter is bad.
I only watch games on ESPN now and nothing more.

For all the bad-mouthing of the Raiders-Texans game before hand it wound up not just bettering last year's equivalent Wild Card Saturday game. The Oakland Raiders versus Houston Texans Wild Card weekend round NFL playoff averaged 25.3 million across ESPN and ABC.

Raiders/Texans averaged a 16.6 overnight across ABC & ESPN peaking with an 18.8 rating from 5:45-6:00 PM ET. On NBC the Lions-Seahawks game averaged a 16.5 overnight rating, way down from the 19.2 for last year's equivalent Steelers-Bengals game that aired on CBS.

Fox's broadcast of the Green Bay Packers' 38-13 win over New York Giants on Sunday drew a 24.0 rating

CBS, which had the early Sunday afternoon game, posted a 19.2 rating and 38 share for its coverage of Pittsburgh Steelers' victory over the Miami Dolphins.

Comparison: per ESPN The Alabama-Clemson game averaged 26.029 million across its networks (includes MegaCasts) and streaming. It was down from last year's game.
