During rotations you get clinical ratings and shelf test scores. There are two ways to honor.

P/F for two years is not good
A residency can't get the full picture of who they are interviewing
There is a difference between a 70 person and a 95 person

No need for P/F. School is stressful. And med school especially should be. Make the grade and you will get a. Degree

But I don't want my neurosurgeon being a 70 average student

You are referring to pre-clinical which is one or one and a half years at the top medical schools. Pre-clinical is graded at the condensed curriculum pass/fail schools, it's just not relevant for residency. Shelf, Step and rotation performance is mostly what the residencies care about. Everyone does well in pre-clinical, it's massive general memorization. It's irrelevant for residency, or any part of being a doctor other than getting to the next step.

You would be better off picking your doctor by their MCAT score. That is the level of ridiculous here. IMHO.
