Trying to help my junior over her anxiety of college apps and admission. What should SAT or ACT scores look like for a top 12% student taking higher level coursework, 4 yr softball letterman, 3 yr choir letterman and plenty of volunteer/leadership experience? Math levels are two years advanced.

TIA!!

A holistic review (Review Admits) will be done for all applicants to Engineering. A&M will evaluate class rank (not specifically GPA), test scores and everything else submitted with the application - outside activities, leadership, employment, the essays, etc. Strength in all the above areas will be important.

Some good test scores can be seen under Academic Admits at http://admissions.tamu.edu/freshman/admitted

She can call an admissions counselor at 979-458-0950.

I would aim for the 1360 at a minimum. Start your preparation now and get help! Don't be one of those families thinking your child can do on their own.

Also, don't wait until senior year. Many students get busy or have difficulties finding time to study. Then those with anxiety feel even more pressure to perform.

Well, auto admit will be going away, as we all know, but I agree on the 1360 and prob a 30 ACT should be good targets for her. If she's in that range and the ECs are solid, she should be good.

32 on ACT. Now just need to figure out what College of Engineering Will want to see for score.

What are their ACT English and Math scores? What level of math will the student take in their senior year? Do they have any coding experience, primarily with python?

Entry into COE is holistic and they'll want to see well prepared applicant.

Quite honestly, it's not that difficult for admission if you meet a handful of metrics.

District does not have next level math for her. She is two years ahead in math, with most being ap or dual credit. ACT breakdown was heavy English side. She will be part of the first holistic review class after top 10%. Not too worried about A&M admissions. Mainly COE.

Find another math class to continue. Don't let her math skills regress for a year. Start learning to code now if you don't know so already. However, don't take your school's AP Computer Science. It's a joke and no one uses Java anymore. Instead, start learning Python or C#. Coding is a part of the engineering curriculum.

Have her get involved in activity related to engineering such as robotics, habit for humanity (ability to build with your hands is appreciated), etc.

Intern or shadow an engineer firm some during the summer. Learn about the profession and understand what a day's worth of work looks like.

Lastly, get the ACT math score up to at least a 30. So if that means taking it again, then do it.

Doing all this combined with a solid class ranking and GPA should get you into the COE.

Thanks for all the info. A lot of that is in the works. She wants environmental eng. plans to join TX AWWA (American waterworks association) and will be shadowing some firms doing design work for water and wastewater treatment plants (I'm actually in the business so using some influence to help).
