I am in the local Lions Club. We do vision and hearing screening at every elementary school in the school district. This year I will do 18 schools. It drives me nuts that they are all posted 30.06, 30.07, and 30.05 making them gun free zones. As much as I hate leaving my pistol in the truck, I comply. The only people who pay attention to those laws are law abiding citizens. Anyone with ill intent will not be deterred by a sign.

Do you have your LTC? If yes, just carry it concealed. If someone figures out that you've got it and asks you to leave, oblige them and go put it in your truck. If no, go get an LTC and then carry it concealed.

Passing a regular 30.06 while carrying is a class c with $200 fine if you refuse to leave after being asked. No big deal, but K-12 school's are off limits by statute. They don't have to install any signs. If they catch you, it's a class 3 felony.

Some All of our gun laws are idiotic.

If I'm understanding you correctly that's insane. If they do anything other than hail him a hero expel the state for the US.

While I fully agree with you, I think it entirely feasible something will be leveraged against the CCW holder. For the simple fact that if they allow him to walk carte blanche, the effectively neuter ALL CCW regulations in the state as it will tell people everywhere, "Hey, it's ok to carry everywhere no matter the signage because if you have to pull and use and you save the day, you will get off completely free. So go ahead and carry everywhere!". At least that is how some lawmakers will very likely interpret it. Not without some merit, I will freely admit.

I hope he gets nothing of course but I will understand why he would be slapped with something, even if I don't agree with it.

As he should. Legalities aside, that man saved lives with his actions. Not everyone runs into danger. This man is an actual hero.

I'd like to know what "common sense gun laws" Oregon is lacking as of today.

Quote:

U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden said in a statement that "my heart goes out to the innocent victims of today's horrific shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School and their loved ones now facing the awful consequences of yet another school shooting in America."

Wyden also suggested how leaders should respond: by passing new restrictions on firearms.

"The best way to honor these victims is to at long last pass common-sense gun laws that reduce the risks of more children, parents, teachers and staff forced to live in fear of similar nightmares for their schools," Wyden said.

Seems Oregon has all their bases covered pretty well here.

Quote:

Minimum Age: You must be at least 21 years old to buy a handgun and at least 18 years old to buy a rifle or shotgun.
Background Checks: Universal background checks are required for all firearm transfers, including private sales and transfers (which must go through a licensed dealer). Oregon uses the Oregon State Police Firearms Instant Check System (FICS).
Ballot Measure 114: Voters approved a measure requiring a permit-to-purchase and completion of a safety course. The implementation and status of these permit rules have faced ongoing state court litigation and stays.

  • Concealed Carry: Carrying a concealed handgun requires a Concealed Handgun License (CHL) issued by your local county sheriff. You must be 21 or older, a U.S. citizen or legal resident, and pass a background and safety competency check. Oregon does not have out-of-state CHL reciprocity.
  • Open Carry: Openly carrying a firearm is generally legal statewide for individuals 18 and older without a permit, though specific local ordinances or jurisdictions (such as Portland and Multnomah County) restrict loaded open carry. [1, 2, 3]
  • Prohibited Locations: Firearms are banned in designated areas including the state capitol grounds, court facilities, designated restricted areas of airports like Portland International Airport, and on school grounds (with specific legal exceptions). Universities and colleges have the authority to ban firearms on campus.
  • Safe Storage: Under state law (Senate Bill 554), gun owners must store firearms in a locked safe, gun room, or secure them with a trigger lock whenever they are not in their immediate control.
Lost or Stolen Reporting: Gun owners must report a lost or stolen firearm to law enforcement within 72 hours of discovering it is missing.
Prohibited Devices: Oregon bans rapid-fire activators (such as bump stocks, binary triggers, and forced reset triggers) under Senate Bill 243. Ghost guns and 3D-printed untraceable firearms are also restricted.
Extreme Risk Protection Orders (ERPOs): Courts can temporarily remove firearms from individuals who pose an acute danger to themselves or others.

Aren't guns already illegal at the school? Isn't shooting someone against the law? Isn't murder illegal? Seems like the shooter violated at least three laws right there. Was a fourth law going to be the magic bullet?

That's one concept I can never seem to wrap my head around. If someone is intent on mass murdering random innocents, then why do these idiots think that another law is going to stop them? Or more to the point, why do they think that they can convince anybody else that yet another new law will make a difference?

Of course the answer is that they don't really think this. They're just using a tragedy for their long term goals of subjugating the ordinary citizen in whatever totalitarian utopia they've imagined for themselves, so they need to disarm said citizens.

I would love to see a federal law passed to declare saving lives (including your own) as an affirmative defense against any and all prosecution for illegally carrying a weapon. Better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6.

It is common sense to investigate the "good Samaritan.". They have to investigate the entire sequence of events. The superintendents needs to shut his mouth.

And the laws they propose always impact everyone else, but would have no effect on the perp, even if he had decided to follow the law. They never let a crisis go to waste and actually do not care who gets hurt.

I've had an CHL/LTC for many years. I am proficient, am a Veteran, and have been a certified safety officer for action pistol and rifle matches. As license holders, we hold ourselves up as law abiding citizens. In good conscience, I won't violate the law, no matter how stupid it is, by carrying passed a 30.06 sign.

Those of us with LTC have been background checked and passed a class on the laws. We are the last people (other than LE) who should be prohibited from carrying concealed in a school. They need to change the law but doubt that will ever happen.

They used children and students, when, for all intents and political purposes, they could have just used bodies.

I swear, it's like the media covers these things for no other reason than to fuel the fires on both sides of the politcal aisle.

Gun free zones disproportionately impact the good guys. The bad guys are fine with carrying because they have already accepted the potential consequences of using it for something even worse. It'll discourage the good guys without discouraging the bad guys. So these could have the opposite of the intended effect.

This is the opposite of things like drunk driving laws. Those are more in line with their intended purpose because nobody gets behind the wheel, intending to plow through someone else.

I get why the idea of a no carry zone might seem like a good idea if you don't think about it closely. It provides a means to prosecute a bad guy if they are caught with a gun before they commit a crime without having to prove intent. I just never hear about it actually working that way.

The media is a business. They make their money off of subscriptions and ad revenue. For that to work, they need to create compelling stories. "Children" sells better than "bodies".

This is just as true for independent media as it is for legacy media. Maybe even more so since they do not have the benefits of inertia or scale.

Shotgun conjures images of a mostly harmless bird-hunting gun. Even Tim Waltz has been seen holding a shotgun. Long gun suggests AR/AK type "weapon of war" so that is the preferred description if they can't factually call it an assault weapon.

Christine Drazan (R) the opposition for governor needs to come out immediately calling for a pardon from Kotek and promising she would do the same if elected.

Not trying to just capitalize on a tragedy, but that pressure is probably the best way to get the hero cleared.
