I've had an CHL/LTC for many years. I am proficient, am a Veteran, and have been a certified safety officer for action pistol and rifle matches. As license holders, we hold ourselves up as law abiding citizens. In good conscience, I won't violate the law, no matter how stupid it is, by carrying passed a 30.06 sign.

Those of us with LTC have been background checked and passed a class on the laws. We are the last people (other than LE) who should be prohibited from carrying concealed in a school. They need to change the law but doubt that will ever happen.

We had a good opportunity a decade ago. A bill was very close to passing that allowed LTC holders to carry anywhere LE could carry other than secure areas. Open carry passed that session instead. I think OC impacted far fewer people than fixing the off limits locations would have.

I still think the best cure for gun free zones is to explicitly put into law that places that prohibit firearms can be held financially liable for injuries or deaths of the people they disarmed.

The article I linked said she bought it around his birthday last year. So probably "his" gun the way a lot of us got "our" first guns before we were old enough to purchase them ourselves. I got "my" first hunting rifle at 14. It was kept in dad's gun cabinet locked with his key, but to the family, it was my gun.

That's not him.
No photos have been published of the shooter yet.

The 'bystander' that neutralized him is a 36 y/o Dad who has two daughters attending the school. He was on his way home for lunch when he heard the shots.

I live about 100 miles from Bend... saw this story after picking up my kid from preschool today.

First time one of these stories has hit close to home since my kid has started school... I'm going to have to figure out what hoops I need to jump through for a CCL here...

Can't put my self in the shoes of anyone here...

How does a 16yo get so ****ed in the head that they target an elementary school.

Live in Portland, but spend a ton of time in Bend seeing friends, skiing and bike racing. Goal is to move there eventually.

Per buddy who has a Kinder in town. 5, 8 and 11 + a teacher. Possible a special-ed class room, but not sure. Hero saw the guy shoot at a car then walk inside. He followed.

Poor babies.

Confirmed it was the special-ed classroom. 7 year old was in a wheel chair.

Someone started a donation page for the 5 year old's family: https://www.gofundme.com/f/coming-together-for-the-summer-family

Bud feeding me info is my touring partner. He's a general surgeon at St. Charles but didn't see any of the victims. Bend is a big small town. Transplants all move there for hobbies and it's pretty tight knit.

Hit my wife pretty hard even though we don't live there. Bend is our safe happy place. Our escape from Portland's nonsense.

We're at SunRiver for Thanksgiving week for Bach opening. Looking forward to getting back to Central OR.

If the shooter is in fact a minor, that is probably one roadblock.

Could easily say 16-yo male/female and it has nothing to do with them being a minor…

We've seen this movie before…

Shooter identified. No motive or connection to school identified yet.

Oregon school shooter identified as 16-year-old John Griffin II whose mother purchased gun, sources say

I would like for once, just ONCE, for a news agency to say "whose parents purchased behavior altering prescription drugs" instead of this worn out anti-gun caption.

Not that I've heard, but I'm playing the odds that history provides.

It wasn't really a comment about this case, it was a comment about the news media and their agenda to go straight to blaming guns and not on another substance that is far more likely to 'cause' incidences like these.

While I philosophically support open carry, I never understood the obsession by the OC crowd. Tactically, it makes no sense to advertise "shoot me first". I'm a gun guy so I notice these things, and can say I've seen fewer than ten people (three different times at local Tractor Supply) open carrying since it became law.

In just an absurd comparison, active military and veterans cannot carry on military bases. Fort Hood shooting is just one example of how ridiculous.

I think Open Carry just gets rid of concerns people had with semi-visible guns under presumed concealed carry requirements.

I agree with you.I support the right to open carry, but I personally would never open carry in public. However, I bet I see someone open carrying at least 2-3 times a week where I live.

When I was in High School we open carried all the time. Come off the ranch with guns on every belt and walk into a convenience store for smokes or whatever and nobody would batt an eye. Granted this was rural South Texas.

No need to mention the rifle racks with guns in every pickup truck in the school parking lot that probably most of y'all my age also experienced.

Twisted teen gunman John J. Griffin II has been pictured for the first time glaring menacingly at the camera since he unleashed a deadly mass shooting at an Oregon elementary school.

Griffin, 16, is seen in the eerie photo posted on Facebook by his mother, Shauntai May Nickerson, on Sept. 10 just over a month before he killed three students, ages 5, 8, and 11, and a teacher at Silver Rail Elementary School on Thursday.

<snip>

There, the young gunman stormed toward the special education classroom, where he was once a student.

He was fatally shot by hero dad, Kaylub Giamanco, who saw Griffin enter the building with a gun while driving home for his lunch break.

<snip>

The mother and son also appeared in a 2020 article about students in the Bend-La Pine School District's NEST program a specialized program for students experiencing intensive behavioral and social skills challenges returning to the classroom after the COVID-19 pandemic.

Nickerson told KTVZ21 at the time that her 10-year-old son, whom she referred to by the first name "Griffin," was struggling with learning from home.

"I think it will be great for Griffin, because I am not certified teaching a special needs student," Nickerson told the outlet. "And I think it will be great for my son to get the help that he needs from the skilled teachers that he needs to get it from."

We need to hear more details to know the true facts here (always beware the fog of war in these cases), but if all that is said is true, and the shooter was neutralized by another person with a weapon (whether technically legal to have the weapon at the location they had it or not), then any of you thinking the the person who neutralized the shooter will be prosecuted are out of your minds...

There isn't a DA in this nation who would prosecute someone who took down a assailant shooting innocent kids...

This country is ****ed up in many ways, but we aren't THAT ****ed up...

Any DA wanting to prosecute someone who stopped an shooter from killing a bunch of kids would face a tremendous amount of external pressure at local, state, and federal levels, and it would be a case they could not win...career suicide, if you will...

Now, we still need the actual facts...but if it went down as is currently being reported, the person who neutralized the shooter will be given a pass on any firearm infraction that might otherwise be charged...

ETA - I can only think of one situation where the person who neutralized the shooter would be prosecuted for a weapons violation, and that might happen in an instance where, in the process of neutralizing the shooter, he he caused collateral damage...

But even then...if he stopped the assailant, it would be a tough sell...

And rural Oregon is very conservative.

According to the police chief, they will be investigating the person who stopped the shooting.

The school district superintendent had to remind everyone that they have a zero tolerance policy toward anyone who brings a gun onto school property, permit or not.

I agree. Superintendent stills needs to shut up.

It is common sense to investigate the "good Samaritan.". They have to investigate the entire sequence of events. The superintendents needs to shut his mouth.

It's part of the complete investigation. The good Samaritan is not going to be prosecuted. Trying to prosecute someone for stopping mass murder is political suicide as stated in an earlier post.

IMO if the mom knew her kid was emotionally disturbed and had anger issues she should not have had a gun in the house. We've seen more and more parents charged in relation to what their kids do with guns, curious if she will face charges.

The kid who shot up the school in Georgia is a prime example. His dad knew he had emotional issues, had been investigated for talking about a school shooting, and had a shrine to the parkland shooter in his bedroom. Dad bought him a gun anyway.

New talking point from the left/anti-gun idiots.

"If the shooter had already been stopped by a teacher, why did Giamanco/the parent have to shoot/kill/execute him?"
The words vary, but that is the jest. Then some call for him to be prosecuted for murder.
