Netflix is reportedly laying off 1,000 workers the streaming giant's biggest cuts since 2022.

Staff were told Wednesday that about 6% of the workforce within product, tech, legal, and human resources teams was being slashed, according to a memo obtained by the Post.
…
The company still has the most subscribers out of any other streaming service, with 325 million worldwide, but shares have fallen 40% percent in the past year. Netflix stock went up about 1% after the layoff news broke.

The TV and film disruptor has been struggling to keep audiences engaged. Bloomberg reported over the summer that the Netflix's biggest shows were losing more than half of their viewers after just one season. The company has been trying to build up its portfolio by adding video podcasts and live shows.

Gee, I wonder why no one watches a show after one season anymore. Could it be because they're WOKE?

Yeah, all that woke backlash is why the Odyssey is the 16th highest grossing picture of all time.

A large part is their inability to commit to shows leads audiences to not commit either. They also have a production cycle that has years in-between seasons because they often don't green light additional seasons until a season is dropped. By the time the new season comes out audiences have moved on and forgotten much of what was in the original.

Question...
How much of that is due in large part to them dropping entire seasons in very short time frame vs the traditional one each week TV cycle?

Seems appropriate to Greenlight after 3-4 episodes and get everything done in time for the next TV cycle that audiences used to be conditioned to.

I think it's a combination of things of which Wokeness is really only a tiny part. Since Netflix overwhelmed the streaming markets earl on, they now face more competition that are also delivering similar content. Apple, Disney/Hulu, Amazon Prime, etc. are real competition.

Purely anecdotal as I don't have the time to look it up right now, it seems that Netflix's premium series releases have slowed a bit and new seasons are not as quickly approved and released. But this just places them on par with their competitors at worst. Apple is the most excruciatingly slow releaser of new seasons than anybody. The writer's strike has had some long-lasting effects and it certainly left the impression that content providers have slacked off.

I think the level of Netflix's wokeness has not really varied and isn't any worse than anybody else. No way they are as bad as Disney and the abominations they have put out. If I'm going to let Netflix's wokeness bother me, then I might as well cancel all of them because they are all equally bad or worse. Netflix gets picked because they are big, but at least they are not Disney.

In the end, I think it is competition that hurts the most and firing a bunch of HR is probably a good move anyway. The best way to end woke content is to not watch it. The algorithms watch you watch everything.

At least some of it, but the difference in releases is bringing in the grand scheme. Assume you have what would have been a fall series before. It runs weekly for maybe 20-24 weeks. A one time drop means you lose 4-5 months between seasons if both were to drop annually, so a year instead of 7-8 months. Except that isn't what happens. Seasons end up being years apart instead of being released annually like traditional television series

The real problem is that writing and filming stops long before the release, and everyone involved with production moves onto something else while everything is in post production. By the time it's all finally finished, gets dropped, and a decision is made to pick it back up, you have to get the writers back together, get scripts, storyboard, plan and build sets, film, etc, etc. You're basically starting over from square one months after the season dropped as opposed to just running production continuously with maybe small breaks between seasons. You're also having to plan and schedule around a lot of other productions for a lot of the same resources like sound studios, stages, sought after locations, and post production teams, which can drag out schedules. Production quality on longer episode, shorter season shows tends to also be much higher, but one of the biggest killers is the start/stop nature of the production cycle.

Same.

Thankfully, Netflix has more than everyone else, so it's not hard to find at least a show to watch every day/night of the year and still not get through my list of things to watch.

Also, more and more people are rotating between streaming services, so if that's even happening with Netflix, that means they're not getting 100% of customers every month of the year like before.

They opened the door for streaming, and almost two decades later Prime, Apple, Disney+, and Paramount (especially with what they're adding) are finally real competition that people will let them go for a month or two to watch what those other guys have to offer.

Yes, I know there's Peacock and others, but they have so little I don't even bother save on rare occasions.

You must be new here, cause if it wasn't for culture wars, the last couple of decades would've been much different in the world of politics.

But nowadays, the whole woke thing, for both the left and right, is becoming more and more a thing of the past.

God help us with whatever our corporate overlords throw at us next to keep us divided, though.

The Diplomat on Netflix is really good. It has the normal subtle Democrat bias that all political shows have, but it's good enough to look past it.

Have not seen the latest season 3 yet.

Republicans can't stop using the word "woke", Which origins simply means. staying alert.

But Republicans have co-opted and weaponized the term "woke" as a catch-all pejorative label to attack progressive policies, diversity initiatives, etc.

It's like when your grandparents misuse a slang term that they have heard their grand kids say in an annoying way to appear hip or clever.

I actually watch quite a few things on all the streaming services. They all have some really good original programming. I really like the kind of 8 to 10 episode shows, usually murder mysteries or espionage or something like that.

I also like documentaries. On all different things.

If I were into documentaries, I'd probably have them all as well. Also, my ADHD doesn't let me watch TV as much as before, so even if I watch a few things a night, I'm never actually keeping up with all that's out there.

Still, it is cool that you're into those things. I will jump at any murder mystery or espionage show that comes out. Right now I'm watching Limetown on Prime, and talk about a hidden gem.

I realize democrats can't stand MAGA and those of us that don't want to see woke injected into the movies and series we watch. But it hurts Netflix's profits to alienate half of their potential subscribing customers. When Michael Jordan was asked why he publicly avoids politics, he famously said "Because republicans buy shoes too".

I think another reason Netflix stock has gotten crushed is there is a proliferation of streaming services and they keep charging more and more. There are plenty of people that don't want to pay $5,000 a year to watch everything on tv. So some streaming options are being dropped.

Why is the Odyssey considered woke?

They put one female actress in a male role and promptly killed them off except for one other tiny scene and at no time did they imply that the "boy" was actually a girl who wants to pretend she has a Y chromosome.

Weird comparison to over-the-top, hyper-sexualized, crude, woke trash that sometimes comes out on Netflix. By the away, I am still a subscriber, but I've thought about dropping them and using that money to rotate. I am currently watching appletv and when I'm done with the slow horses latest season, I will switch to paramount for a while.
