Libertarian leaning fiscal conservative here.

You know it is possible to legalize edibles without legalizing smoking it, right? So all of these objections about the smell (which are totally legit...I can't stand it) are just people trying to find excuses for keeping it illegal.

I'd prefer smoking of ANYTHING be illegal in Texas due to the shared nature of the smoke which can't really be prevented. Otherwise, I'm all for personal freedom so long as it doesn't impact others.

Did we not "solve" this issue with cigarettes? Assuming for a moment banning all smokeable products isn't reasonable.

Not really. You could have a neighbor smoking pot in his backyard that would be "legal" but then everyone on the block has to smell it. Same for apartments - that stuff permeates the entire building (been in such apartments as proof that yes this is an issue).

Any smokeable product really can't be contained to just the smoker..and I see that as a problem as it violates the principle of "don't impact others".

This is the strangest issue to be obsessed with.

Right? Why won't conservatives leave it the **** alone?

Let's make a deal, conservatives will repeal all weed laws if liberals will repeal all gun control laws. Individual liberty for the win!

Last I checked I still had an AR? And all my other weapons? Huh.

Weird comparison.

Lucky for you, you likely don't live in a communist state. Many of our countrymen that do and their 2nd amendment rights are being violated everyday. There are many onerous gun control laws violating all of our 2nd amendment rights. Thankfully the courts are axing more and more everyday. Hopefully they do the same to the dumbass Hemp ban.

I guess you only care about bans you don't like?

THC can be abused by irresponsible users, just like guns can be abused by irresponsible owners. There's no reason to limit access to responsible law abiding citizens.

I live in Texas. So while I agree with you, my point stands.

Texas has already banned smokeable weed. Including the loophole stuff that has been legal for years and years and hasn't led to any of these hypotheticals the alcoholics screech about.

The remaining, chemically derived means like gummies and drinks go away in November.

All access, gone. Explicitly because of conservative, authoritarian policy. There isn't a majority anywhere that wants this, in any state.

My guns? Still here.

I know I harp on this when this topic comes up, but it's close to home for me. I can't drink, I'm an alcoholic, but weed let's me relax like alcohol did, with friends and family too, without killing me or feeling like I need it daily. Well, **** me right?

Alcohol has destroyed parts of my family, killed my father, killed a childhood best friend, and now fentanyl has taken my 21 yr old cousin. Not going to dox myself further... You get the point.

But hey, let's pretend we're protecting people by going after a plant.

Edit: this doesn't even touch on the BILLIONS in private small business economy being vaporized across the country for this

Look I get it, I certainly do not align with the GOP on every issue. I despise their big government nanny BS as much as I do the same from the Democrats. MJ prohibition is by far their dumbest position; although, their idiotic fiscal policy as of late isn't much better than Democrats and much more impactful.

I'm well aware of what's going on with the ban and I despise Dan Patrick as much as any Democrat. I believe he's a big part of what got the national ban pushed through in November and it pisses me off that the GOP is bowing down to the lobbyist that bribed him. I'll never vote for a scum bag Democrat because they are not a reasonable alternative, so that leaves me abstaining or voting third party when Patrick is on the ballot. Which is the opposite of my typical position of holding your nose and voting against Democrats.

I'm not much of a smoker, but have a lot of people in my circle that are and very successful professionally. It really does prevent a lot of people from becoming alcoholics and probably kept me out of trouble in college.

Just this February I lost my best friend since fourth grade to alcohol. I had to clean up his room and found six plastic bottles of Vodka next to the bed where he died. He was a diesel mechanic shop supervisor and couldn't smoke pot due to CDL drug testing regs. If he had been able to maybe he would have chosen that vice instead of alcohol and still be here today. Alcohol is incredibly destructive and MJ prohibitions are also destructive.

The Democrat's gun policies absolutely ruin lives. Look at anyone that had felony convictions for mere possession charges that are otherwise law abiding peaceful citizens. How many people have been killed that could have defended themselves, but were in places where possessing a firearm put them in legal jeopardy.

You still have your guns because conservatives fight for your right to have them. If it were up to progressives and Democrats you'd be disarmed like the Australians, New Zealanders, and many Euros. Fish in a barrel for criminals to shoot.

Progressive DAs that will charge people that defend themselves is another egregious example. You really can't get any lower than that.

How about the National Guard member that was arrested for unlicensed possession of a hand gun (a felony) in Washington DC recently for having a gun in his car? He was there on guard duty but off duty at the time of the arrest. Should mere possession of a handgun in your car saddle you with a felony conviction for the rest of your life?

Well I guess you're going to work on a residential construction crew or wash dishes in a restaurant for the rest of your life, because you drove across an imaginary border with something that is completely legal to have in most other places in the country.

Just yesterday a man broke gun control laws by carrying on school grounds and killed a mass shooter. How many children's lives did he save? Will the likely progressive DA prosecute him to protect their idiotic gun control laws?

Definitely a stark contrast from the statewide ban that Lt. Gov Dan Patrick single handedly decided for over 30 million texans despite receiving overwhelming input in favor of legalizing.

Well electing him will help destroy the country and state but at least you can be baked and not care!

If you're on this side of the issue with Talarico, you should gut check your own principles.

That's a shame. Sorry to hear about your friend.

For me personally, my body just doesn't handle alcohol well. I get sick easily. I'd probably be the guy who only has 1 beer, but somehow blow over the legal limit. I never met my grandfather on my dad's side because he was an alcoholic and died early. We probably all have stories of relatives or friends who have had their lives destroyed by alcohol.

Absolutely no reason weed shouldn't be legal as long as alcohol is legal. Not a reason to vote for this tool though. Eventually the old liberty-hating "conservatives" will die off.

I dunno…. I thought once the Peace & Love generation was in power that it would be legalized. I don't believe in much "my generation will put it right" stuff anymore.

I think most of GenX probably remembers who the kids were out on "Smoker's Row" and doesn't want that for the rest of society. Let's just say that Smoker's Row was not a who's who of the high achievers in most schools.
