According to Amit Segal of Israel's Channel 12 News:

Following situation assessments and passenger testimonies, Israel is treating the incident as a full-fledged terrorist attack.

It appears that the co-pilot repeatedly stabbed the captain. Once the attack began, several crew members and passengers managed to break through the cockpit door and subdue the attacker.

According to one senior official, the co-pilot is currently being questioned, and indications are mounting that he intended to take control of the plane and crash it with the passengers on board.

Questions that the article should have answered on this one......

1) How did the passengers and crew break through a secure door (you know the whole flight safety thing after 9/11)?

2) Who landed the plane?

There were supposedly pilots dead heading on the flight who took over.

Don't know how they got into the cockpit, but one would have to assume the pilot who did NOT want to have his 72 virgins today opened the door.

2. Pilot was not killed.
1. Pilot opened the door.

Co-Pilot was a wimp.

The deadheading pilots could have had the code to the cockpit. But I think we learned from a deliberate crash a few years ago that the keypad can be turned off from inside the cockpit.

I've got to think the pilot, once he was stabbed and realized what was happening did everything he could to ensure the co-pilot couldn't take over including opening the cockpit door and screaming for assistance, which fortunately occurred and this lunatic couldn't use the plane as a weapon.

The real question is what vetting is taking place to ensure Islamic lunatics can't become pilots. I'd like to know his experience and resume and how he was able to be in that position in the first place.

For this particular case, I have no idea.

But in the broader scheme, I expect more of this. Add in the persistence of the radical terrorist groups and their patience in playing the long game, mix in DEI policies, add a huge dose of everyone being fearful of getting called a racist and you get ideal conditions for these things going undetected until its too late.

Fly El Al. The joke is, you will never be hijacked but will always feel like a hostage. Seriously though, they are decent and very safe.

Lucky that two relief pilots were on board. If I was an Israeli I don't think I would fly an Islamic airline and just stick with El Al.

Many years ago. I almost had to take a business trip to Israel and heard some stories about the security. Obviously, there is a lot of scrutiny to get in the country. However, you are also heavily scrutinized when you leave.

They don't just look at your passport, check your ticket, then stamp you out. They ask you detailed questions about where you went and what you did. If you spent a week visiting customers, each one needs to provide a letter explaining when you visited their facility and what you discussed.

Yep. Much harder to get out than to get in actually.

It is highly automated now and much more convenient than the old days.

I've been on that week long business trip to Israel and that tracks with my departure. I was questioned by three different agents, each one at a time and then comparing notes between rounds. The initial agent alone went through three rounds of questions with me.

I had to show hotel receipts, account for each day, and my luggage was thoroughly inspected. Flying in and out of Israel with a bag full of electronic work tools is not recommended.

On the plus side, the lead agent was an attractive female.

I had a work colleague that had to fly to Tel Aviv and afterwards he told me how strict they were. He said there was a nun in front of him that they searched like crazy, not only her luggage but clothing as well. He was up next and asked the attendant "was that really necessary?" He just looked at him and said "Sir, I'm not flying on this aircraft, you are." He was like OK, do what you have to do.

The attempted hijacker/assailant survived.

I hope the Israelis Waterboard him relentlessly to soak (pun intended) for everything the can get from him, all the way from who backed this, down to his favorite goat's name.

Then execute him.

The Bombardier seat, unlike the rudder is not a flight critical control surface.

That rudderless aircraft was undoubtedly hell to stabilize, control, abs ultimately land safely. That is some phenomenal airmanship.

Seriously. My next door neighbor and his wife are Israeli. They have two sweet little girls that sort of look up to my daughter. I know for a fact that he was in the IDF. I suspect that he's seen some **** based on the way he sits in his garage ripping cigarettes with a stoic stare on his face while his kids play in the driveway.

Kudos to him, especially if he opened the door after being stabbed (some reports say pax broke into the cockpit, I have no idea, but in 30 seconds they would have had to have acted incredibly fast if so). Apparently, both a Russian and Ukrainian pilot were flying as passengers and helped stabilize/land the plane, though of course again unconfirmed to date.

Fly Dubai is a state-owned airline. They've been flying to Tel Aviv since 2023 pretty much continuously. I'm amazed at the traffic but also appreciate the thawing relations mean a lot at this time of (well, perpetual) conflict regionally.

If you are talking to a 19 year old, typically female, you are doing good. When they hand you off to a dude with grey hair, you messed up somewhere and your day is about to become a challenge.
