Texas cattle feeders association on ICE operations impact

A joint statement from Texas Cattle Feeders Association, Kansas Livestock Association and Oklahoma Cattlemen's Association regarding the ongoing ICE operations in Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas:

"The Kansas Livestock Association, Oklahoma Cattlemen's Association and Texas Cattle Feeders Association are closely monitoring reported U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activity affecting agricultural communities in Oklahoma, Kansas, and Texas.

Our organizations respect the responsibility of federal agencies to enforce the law. At the same time, cattle producers, feedyards, dairies, livestock markets, processors, and other rural businesses depend on a stable workforce to care for animals, protect food safety, and keep the supply chains operating. Sudden workforce disruptions can create immediate animal-welfare, operational, and economic consequences that extend well beyond an individual business. These ICE operations are having a massive chilling effect on the legal, documented, skilled workers that put beef on the table and keep the cattle supply chain moving. Additionally, these types of disruptions will lead to higher beef prices for consumers.

Reported impacts to our organizations throughout the past few days have been:

- Thousands of fed cattle slated for shipping to processors now delayed, resulting in millions of dollars in lost revenue and additional costs.

- Workforce disruptions at numerous supply chain chokepoints such as feedyards, dairies, processors, feed and grain companies, transportation hubs, and community services.

These disruptions come at a time of enhanced focus and pressure on the cattle and beef supply chain. They are a costly and unnecessary impact to cattle producers already suffering from unwelcome political interference to both the markets as well as the physical supply chain. Frustratingly, the harm these actions cause to cattle producers last for days and weeks after such operations conclude.

We urge federal officials to conduct enforcement actions in a lawful, orderly, and transparent manner; respect due process; and communicate clearly with affected employers and communities."

This implies the enforcement actions have not been lawful.

With the scrutiny that ICE gets everywhere, where are the factual stories of unlawful actions?

Not the Joe was detained while things were sorted out. Not the but he has been here 30 years and should be allowed to stay based on feels. But Joe had all the paperwork he was required to carry, was in full compliance with his status, and was still detained/deported.

in what way?

If they aren't criminals, and aren't illegal...what's the issue? (serious question)

Is it safe to say that none of this would be happening if they hadn't illegally hired illegal immigrants?

If they are illegal, fire them. If they are not, tell them to grow a pair. If they refuse to do so, go after the employer.

Simple solutions are often the best.

If ICE is doing something extra-judicial here then show the receipts. Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas ranchers could find thousands of willing journalists and would come off as credible.

The more likely explanation is that of course they hire illegals, the ICE disruptions cause immediate harm to the business and will impact prices.

NIMBY equivalent.

I've met dozens of people who are staunchly anti illegal immigration and also employers of those who have.

They want to deport all of them, except for their guys.

Thanks for framing it better than I did. That is exactly what I was trying to convey.

Instead what is happening is the anti-ICE folks are using this as proof of unlawful activity.

Not to mention they are enjoying in the schadenfreude of conservative minded ag folks being perceived as screwed over by Trump.

If there are legit stories, I want to see them. Until then I suspect these organizations are trading themselves to be used as pawns in exchange for scaring off enforcement.

That isn't how I read it.

Stop employing illegals if you don't want them deported. Illegals are not entitled to the same "due process" that Americans are.

Hilarious. I'm fairly certain that the feedlot in Artesia Wells which doesn't have a close town to house employees did not employ illegals and seemed to do ok. They all spoke English that I saw, unless they kept some hidden.

I'll say this...various industries do rely on seasonal or migration labor. I'm ok with that.

These farmers/ranchers should be pushing their legislators to improve the system, rather than criticizing them for enforcing the law.

We need to work with Mexico, to facilitate an organized/legal labor program, which allows good workers to assist these industries.

What we can't allow any longer, is open borders and illegals flooding into the country unchecked...even if that helps an industry.

Some woke POS lawyer wrote that BS and sent a fat bill to the Cattlemen.

Also, don't hire illegals.

No amount of logic is going to convince the illogical that orange man isn't so bad that we should all vote for socialists in 2026. He wants to vote for a socialist who wants to kill the O&G industry, dismantle capitalism, open the borders, ban guns, legalize abortion up to birth, allow men to play girls sports and hang out in women's locker rooms, and pay for trans surgeries for little kids. Why would you issue a statement urging them to be lawful, if you weren't suspecting them/accusing them of being unlawful?

The anti-ICE crowd is certainly using it as fuel to their fire.

Correct. Two goals:

1. A functioning immigration system.
2. A reliable supply of agricultural workers to feed Americans and keep prices stable.

ICE raids on agriculture will disrupt food supply reliability and increase prices, unless one wants to engage in magical thinking. That's just an economics.

I can certainly see where a valid immigration check at a slaughterhouse or feedyard could slow down or stop operations while documentation is checked. There is an H2A program, there's lots of documentation to keep, and many use it. It's the price you pay for that labor.

It sounds like this is an example of legal workers being spooked thinking that they are going to get rounded up as if they were illegal so they don't show up to work. I know that is a dumb reason and if they are legal they will be fine, but fear is powerful.

The only thing I could see happening on the part of ICE would be if they are detaining people on the suspicion of being illegal just because someone is Hispanic working on a farm. I would like to think that is not happening, but it would not surprise me.

You can thank the libs and media (redundant) for fostering the narrative (or refusing to debunk it) that people of legal status, whether they be citizens or legal visa holders, are being rounded up and shipped out en masse just because they're brown.

I'm frankly at the point where I don't care of the cost of food goes up, the cost to frame a house goes up, etc. If you are employing an illegal labor force, I hope ICE is coming to your plants/factories/job sites/farms/etc. and making your life miserable and making you incur a ton of costs. You should be happy they don't seem to be keen on sending too many employers to jail (which I would also support).

Of course it is the left's narrative driving the fear but it exists and that causes workers to not show up leading to disruptions. I agree we need to hire people who are legal and ideally citizens.

We used to have a program after WW2 called the Bracero program that did exactly that. No one seems interested in that.

They are hiring illegals and it's impacting their biz. They will probably vote for Talarico.

This is how we end up with a failed state and Marxism.

The Rs want the illegals so they can exploit their labor, always have. The Dems want the illegals so they can exploit their labor AND take permanent control of the country.

The Bolsheviks never intended to end up with a strong man and misery. But that's where socialism leads, every time.

Read between the lines. They're asking ICE to go away for a while so they can keep supply chains moving. Both their legal and possibly illegal workers aren't showing up.

Pay them enough and they will.

Exploiting human beings so you can eat a cheap steak seems incompatible with claiming you care about workers, immigrants, or "the little guy."

No it does not. It implies that ranchers are hiring illegal aliens and don't like ICE enforcing the law. Why would a legal citizen be concerned. They may be questioned during an investigation but that is no unlawful. Tell me what laws you see being broken?
