"Control" in this context is having agreements where we conduct military exercises with a country that directly is next to the narrow passage of water. Thus if something were to go wrong there we could easily and quickly deploy and have a friendly neighbor.

In the case of Morocco our relationship goes back a long way but has gotten stronger under Trump. It's also part of why you saw Trump do nothing about Cueta except make fun of Spain.

Indonesia is more significant as is Malacca. Malacca is as valuable to China as the Panama Canal is to us if not moreso. Indonesia has the larger military and population of the 3 countries that are in the Strait with Malaysia an Singapore as the other 2 that we have long had friendly relations with. Indonesia has been more neutral. Trump essentially made a deal focused around trade and military cooperation where we actively conduct exercises with Indonesia to interdict with bad actors in the Strait. That is a huge leverage point over China. It's also a very, very long way around Indonesia to get to China. Having a country like that as an ally and with significant shared interests plus mistrust of China is extremely valuable.

The key point is we don't want or need day to day control over those critical waterways. What we need and have is the ability to step in very quickly with an allied country and seize control if we had to against our enemies and the fact that they know we have that capability is very significant. It's far more valuable than having tens of thousands of troops sitting in Central Europe.

I quit CNN 100%. I look at it now sometimes and turn it on satellite radio and I can't believe I ever listened to it. I can't really watch Fox either but that's not as bad as CNN.

Any show that goes into in-depth news commentary is garbage. I listen to Bloomberg sat radio in the mornings for financial info. They give brief headlines because they want to get back to financial stuff and I've found that's ok.

Edit: Bloomberg morning, like 6-10 am. They are hyper focused on markets opening. Afternoon Bloomberg is garbage.

The only thing I will say about people "heaping praise" on Trump is because everyone has figured out that's how you get to him. So I don't put much stock in that either.
