This is absolutely true. Past incidents like the Spring Shadows Glen scam in Houston caused such a backlash against involuntary mental health commitments that it is nearly impossible to get anybody committed for anything more than very short term (think 7-10 days max) treatment before they are released again, even if they have a long history of almost immediately stopping their meds again as soon as they are released.

You've pointed out another issue as well. The history of people with severe mental illness and multiple involuntary psych hospitalizations often does not follow them at all especially across different hospital systems and/or political jurisdictions in part because of HIPA (sic?) laws. The hospital systems, counties, PD's often don't know when a person has had multiple incidents or involuntary hospitalizations and they also often refuse to talk to family members or others who know a more complete history . I don't fully understand why. It seems like professionals would want as comprehensive a picture as they can get but it seems to be just the opposite to me. maybe for some reason the less they know the less liability they assume but it kind of ignores the point that getting someone to sustained stability is (should be) the goal.

It's a pretty hopeless and frustrating place to be if you have a family member or friend that has mental issues which is why I am so critical of the state of the psychiatric medicine industry . It's ineffective at best. At worst it may be about making sure they maximize their patient load.

More seriously, no. Honestly, I don't. I look at Willco and see (1) reliable votes for GOP statewide elected officials and (2) a 4-1 GOP split of the county commissioners. That looks pretty clean. Getting down into the weeds on the 16 school districts is a little deep for me.

I knew Andrew well, considered him a friend, and was blessed to know him. He was also the Pavements and Materials Division Head for the Texas A&M Transportation Institute (TTI) for quite a long time. Andrew was a phenomenal individual. He was a genuinely kind person who cared about other people and was always willing to help. He spent his time taking care of his ailing parents and enjoyed playing the bass guitar. He will be missed by many people.

I met him a few times when I was in the Georgetown Area Office. I was working on precast concrete pavement on the IH 35 NBFR between Lakeway and SH 195. He stopped by several times to talk about it and check it out. We emailed a few times, and kept in touch for a before he went to TTI. I think I saw him at a Short Course or two before I quit going because Amadeo took all the fun out of it.

I hadn't talked to him in over 20 years, but he was a genuinely nice guy, and it shocks me that this happened to him. I hope his killer gets the death penalty. And quickly.
