I'm with OP. Recreational grieving & maudlin sentimentality has spun out of control...This Irish Time article from a few years ago clarifies it.

Why the death of Robin Williams triggers an unquestioned outpouring of grief The Irish Times
Quote:

The death of Robin Williams was a sad event. The actor, who took his own life following a long battle with depression, leaves behind three children and a distraught wife. Williams was a significant figure in the entertainment business and, like most newspapers, The Irish Times published tributes and obituaries. This is as it should be.

I was sorry to hear the news, but I did not cry or experience anything like proper grief. After all, I am not related to Robin Williams. I have never met Robin Williams. I know nobody directly affected by his loss.
That all seems sane enough. Out there in the wider world, however, millions of strangers found themselves "devastated" and "bereft" at the news. A random sampling of Twitter drags up a surprising number of users who "can't stop crying".

Quote:

Emotional incontinence
The wonder is that, rather than triggering any great debate about an imbalance in priorities, this continuing phenomenon engenders little comment. We've become used to the emotional incontinence. It happened when Michael Jackson died. It happened when Heath Ledger passed. It happened most conspicuously when Princess Diana met her violent end.

Such gushing had happened in the past. There were reports of women flinging themselves from windows when actor Rudolph Valentino croaked in 1926. But the princess of Wales's death marked the point at which recreational grieving reached epidemic proportions.

A nation that had once prided itself on a phlegmatic approach to emotional matters allowed large parts of the capital to be engulfed in oceans of petrol-station bouquets and cheap cuddly toys. Oddly, rather than being dedicated to the bereaved relatives, as was traditionally the pattern, the lilies and teddy bears were inscribed to the unaware deceased.

I can barely manage my own life...I don't need to grieve with a stranger's family. I have no connection and no emotional bandwidth to contribute.

This isn't new. Bush did it for Bob Hope in 2003. Trump did it for Billy Graham in 2018. Bush and Obama have done it for a few prominent civil rights activists.

I have a flag here at the ranch. I fly it at half staff on Memorial Day, Veterans Day, Armistice Day, Dec. 7th, and June 6th.
I also fly it at half staff on the anniversary of my dads death and my grandfathers….one who served and was wounded in WWI and one who served in WWII.
And I really couldn't care less what someone thinks about it.
With that being said, Dolly is an American Icon.

This deserved honorific should be the Tail End Charlie in your outrage formation:

Dolly Parton did more for humanity than the sum charitable effort of everybody on this site, directly touching people and materially contributing to the improved lives of tens of thousands; particularly here in Tennessee. Her charitable contributions exceed $500 MILLION.

Oh, and she just happened to be an amazingly accomplished, skilled singer, songwriter, actor & personality. I guess these matter, some, but they pale when held up against her altruism. She truly deserves this half-mast honor.

I feel it's overdone as well and wasn't planning to lower the flag at the office until I left for lunch and saw someone had already done it. So i guess it'll stay lowered until it's time to raise it.

Dolly was a fantastic person, almost universally loved. Which is why most of us won't kick up a public fuss over this.

But I agree, the flag thing has gotten out of hand. This is not a pro or anti any politician statement. This is one of the few issues where both sides truly are at fault.

It started with 'school shootings', and has progressed to celebrity honors.

I believe the flag code has specific guidelines as to who is honored, and how for long. We need to go back to that.

The law was changed in 1998.
"Any rule or custom pertaining to the display of the flag of the United States of America, set forth herein, may be altered, modified, or repealed, or additional rules with respect thereto may be prescribed, by the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of the United States, whenever he deems it to be appropriate or desirable; and any such alteration or additional rule shall be set forth in a proclamation."

An entire week? Has that been done before? If so, I don't recall it.

Didn't dislike her music, but never bought it either. If we get another obama-type in the white house, he might wind up doing this every week, soon as one rapper or the other gets shot murdered.

Flags should only be lowered for remembrance days for the fallen and, at most, when a President/Former President passes. No one else, no matter how great they are.

Fixed one very unfortunate typo. Its Flags, just flags.

Does it really matter? I'm a boat guy and have friends say "rope" instead of "line" all the time. Or use the word "caliber" when it should be "cartridge" when talking firearms.
The meaning is implied anyway.

I can't to read the outrage here when flags are lowered to half-staff in honor of LeBron James. I'd guess many folks who previously didn't care if the honor is watered down or not will suddenly care a whole bunch.

No one is upset.

For half staff to mean something, there is a protocol, a precedent, and a minimum standard to uphold. Otherwise it becomes a participation trophy that means nothing.

She deserves honor. Half staff is not the proper one. But she's not the first, and likely will not be the last that it will be used improperly

Quote:

President Donald Trump said he's ordered U.S. flags to be lowered across the country in honor of the late iconic country music star Dolly Parton, who died at 80 years old.

Trump, in a Truth Social post shortly after Parton's death was announced, said he directed American flags to be lowered for the next week beginning at 6 p.m. ET on Aug. 25.

Honestly, this is just ridiculous. This trend of constantly putting flags at half mast any time a government official or politician died was bad enough without now doing it when celebrities die.

Just leave the flags at half mast year round at this point.

If you want to argue flag policy, that's fine.

If you're arguing against a tribute to Dolly Parton, you're wrong.

That woman was an angel on Earth.
