President Donald Trump said he's ordered U.S. flags to be lowered across the country in honor of the late iconic country music star Dolly Parton, who died at 80 years old.
Trump, in a Truth Social post shortly after Parton's death was announced, said he directed American flags to be lowered for the next week beginning at 6 p.m. ET on Aug. 25.
Honestly, this is just ridiculous. This trend of constantly putting flags at half mast any time a government official or politician died was bad enough without now doing it when celebrities die.
Just leave the flags at half mast year round at this point.
I would like you to name 100 people who have done more for America than Dolly. The amount of philanthropy she has done is tremendous. Every student in the state of Tennessee gets a book from her foundation every year. She has donated hundreds of millions of dollars specifically targeting literacy and has done so quietly. Just calling her a celebrity is exceedingly short sighted. She isn't some instagram influencer. She is a true American hero and we were lucky to see it with our own eyes.
I'd argue she's done more for Americans on a practical level than some presidents.
-She produced countless movies, TV shows, and projects through her Sand Dollar production company (she partially financed Buffy the Vampire Slayer)
-The Imagination Library
-Literally paid to rebuild Eastern TN after devastating wildfire
-Funded thousands of dollars in medical research
-Paid the college tuition of any employee at Dollywood no matter how small a role they had.
-Asked no one build a statue in her honor until she had passed
-Turned down the Presidential Medal of Freedom twice from Trump and again from Biden. Because she had initially declined when Trump offered she thought not would appear political of she accepted it from Biden
I admit I am very much biased in favor of Dolly, she changed my family's life in so many ways big and small. But as far as role models go I can't think of a better one. If anyone deserves flags at have staff it's her.
