Not a whole lot of open flat land that isn't on a river or bottom of a valley between the giant mountains that encompass all of Nepal.

Yup. Go compare to any mountain town in the rockies in a valley like that. They all look similar.

Those are more like lahars: extremely channelized surges of water mixed with debris. All their construction can only be along a narrow strip along the rivers and streams in those steep valleys.

So where did the water come from? I get there was an ice avalanche, but was there dammed up water behind it that all let loose at once, or did it dam up something else and shunted river water where it normally doesn't flow?

It's being reported now that that was a glacier collapse that was picked up on seismographs.

Flash floods have my utmost respect. Second only to 'naders. You don't grow up or spend time in the deep desert without a healthy regard for them. Even still, to see something of this magnitude….speechless. Those poor souls. Many I am sure will never be recovered.

Likely the former. Plus all the heat being generated could melt some of the ice.

These videos are what it would've looks like if there were cameras in Pompei (granted volcanic vs flood). Unimaginable devastation. Praying for those impacted.

My BIL's brother is a missionary in Nepal. BIL said he was driving that road just a few weeks ago. He happens to be stateside, but I heard that many of his ministry partners have not been heard from today. Very sad.

There are giant ruts and ripples in the ground in western us from ice damn breaks as glaciers from the last ice age melted. Referred to as Missoula floods and a single large event called the Bonneville flood

It's coming out the landslide WAS the earthquake. The earthquake that was detected was the fault of the landslides, not the cause.

half-a-mile wide piece of ice rolling down a 4000 foot elevation and bouncing into a shallow lake with a channel of mountains straight towards the town.. That's a lot of energy. It's hard to imagine any of the people on the ground in any of this videos made it out alive. They had no chance.

The first time I ever went through Hunt Texas I saw two giant boulders sitting in the riverbed where there was a river crossing.

I thought to myself there must've been a really massive flood at some point that dropped those two off.

Years later I saw them again right after the flood. I guess the shape of that valley Hunt is built in acts as a Venturi for water.

Terrible. Nature is undefeated. Prayers for those people, absolutely horrific.

"The Lhende Khola has flooded twice in 14 months, this time triggered by an ice rock avalanche from a glacier on the Nepal side that blocked the river and released a sudden surge downstream," said Saswata Sanyal, a disaster risk reduction specialist at the climate research group.

He noted the importance of early warnings in "a warming Himalaya."

The disaster in Nepal and Tibet is not a one-off. The Lhende Khola river system has now flooded twice in just 14 months and the increasingly unstable Himalayan ice system threatens communities, infrastructure and water supplies across one of the world's most densely populated regions.

It saw similar flash floods in August last year, when a glacial lake in Tibet overflowed because of high temperatures. Nine people were killed, and critical infrastructure, including a bridge connecting Nepal and China, was damaged.

The Himalayan mountain range spans several countries in South Asia and has many of the world's highest peaks and remaining glaciers.

The steep slopes and the lush valleys below the Himalayan mountain range are especially vulnerable to flooding and landslides, and extreme weather events like intense monsoons and melting glaciers have become more common because of warming due to human-caused climate change.

Researchers in Kathmandu found earlier this year that glaciers across the Hindu Kush Himalaya region are melting faster, with ice loss rates doubling since 2000.

The threat from melting glaciers has become a global concern.
