I agree the best person should be hired. But I'm guessing I'll never convince you that the good ole boy network doesn't always (or even usually) hire the best person, just like you'll never convince me that it does.
I am a white male, where the F is this "good ol boy network"?
A lot of folks confuse 'good ol boy network' for standard networking. When I got my first real job in oil and gas, I met a lot of great folks in industry. When I was laid off, I just reached out to all I could. Eventually, I landed a job for no other reason than than the guy knew me. I walked into work Monday past a stack of 28 resumes from people with better credentials. I'm a huge fan of nepotism and good ol' boy networking. It's what makes the world go round.
Successful people and rich people are not rich and successful because they are lucky or 'amazing' at their job. They are successful and rich because they know the right people to the help grease the gears a bit.
So unlike the majority of posters on this thread, you're not an advocate of hiring the best person for the job. At least you own up to it, but I'll never agree with that philosophy.
I appreciate your point, and it's a noble idea but it's simply not reality.
You will find that we, as humans, base every decision we ever make during our entire time on this planet on emotion. It is never based on raw facts. It's just how we are wired. Myself, and millions of others have made a living exploiting this in sales. Likewise, when you are hired, it's rarely about your ability to be the 'best person for the job'. It's about the company or hiring manager feeling good about hiring you. It's just a reality of life. That is why we say "It's not what you know, it's who you know". If you own a widget factory and you need a widget engineer, the best person for that job is probably some Chinese guy with 3 degrees in engineering, math and physics. But he is not who is going to get hired. You are going to solicit resumes and you are going to get 100 of them. What is the first thing you are going to look at? It's probably going to be where they got their degree from, you'll probably prioritize Ags, and then you'll probably subconsciously prioritize people who look like you. If by some chance you manage to ignore all of that, then you will select a Chinese guy because of his degrees and realize he is completely untested and realize he has a lot of risk. Then you may come across John Smith that you talked to for an hour at a trade show and Jimmy, your office buddy said he was a great guy and a real stand up employee....and you'll just hire him. You'll check out his degree, his school, and justify that emotional decision with a fact validation the like "Man, he has an engineering degree from A&M and he's from a small town where I grew up and all those guys were hard workers and everyone was good people"....
I appreciate your fervor for hiring the best, but the best doesn't get hired. The easiest low risk good enough option gets hired...aka "The Good Ol' Boy Network". And John Smith will lose the job to Jennifer who is 18 and has big tatas and tight dress...again..emotional.
