how does this help the American farmer

Sounds like the beef growers lobby didn't grease the wheels properly and ranchers are now going to get screwed.
this won't really have much impact on live cattle prices.
This is to help out McDonalds and other fast food corporations that rely solely on ground beef
How is flooding the market with cheap foreign beef not going to impact the price of beef? I can tell you the family members of mine that raise beef are watching this very closely.

first off this is only a 90 day measure. Even at 25% less, it's still not cheap beef. You're family members are already getting the highest price for beef, EVER.
Using numbers in the article beef would drop a little over a dollar a pound, still putting ground beef over $5 a pound.
My guess very little of this beef makes it to stores, it'll all go to fast food joint.

assuming like the article says, it's only a 90 day measure, it at best will keep prices the same. The election will be over with by the time this measure runs out

Good thing it was not a mistake. Tariffs have been a yuge win for Trump, pearl clutching on f16 aside.
Thats not consumer relief. Thats business relief. Just like all those tariffs that were passed onto us and then they got to reclaim refunds back from the government.BQ_90 said:

A strawman stacked on top of a whataboutism. Figures as much. Your inability to answer the question pretty much answers it for you.flown-the-coop said:Jeeper79 said:Care to share some citations that aren't from government websites or mouthpieces?flown-the-coop said:Jeeper79 said:Or even better, we could just not tariff. What is being proposed is hardly "flooding the market" because it's just hamburger. Where do you think a huge percentage of our hamburger comes from? Hint: It's not that choice feedlot steer or heifer and nothing you'd likely want a steak from. This might have a desirable impact on keeping those older cows another year and putting another calf out there in the process.

Price fixing in any commodity has never worked
Well, while this IS meddling with the markets, it is not price fixing...

Beet feeder cattle prices hit an all time high this year and today are only about 14 percent off this all time high.
The current Texas Drought is much bigger news than Trumps announcement today.

So this is for ground beef, but I want some Wagyu ribeyes at 25% below current market

My in-laws raise certified, 100% Wagyu cattle. I have a cabinet freezer full of it.
It is next level.

It's all just for show at this point. I know where my hamburger comes from. I've seen it from the moment it hit the ground until it walks in the butcher door.

Dude, talk about living the dream!
Quote:
National Cattlemen's Beef Association
No cow-calf producer in America is asking for increased imports. Undercutting American farmers and ranchers with products from foreign competitors does nothing to create market confidence or encourage rebuilding the herd.
For the second time in less than 12 months, the Trump Administration is intervening in markets in an attempt to artificially lower beef prices. Current retail prices are high because of strong consumer demand for the high-quality beef we produce.
Incentivizing additional foreign imports undermines America's producers at a critical time as they make decisions about rebuilding numbers for next year. U.S. farmers and ranchers need stability. Unlike spur-of the-moment trading decisions made based on White House social media posts, the decisions and investments ranchers make in their herds are made YEARS in advance, not days or weeks.
The Trump Administration's repeated whiplash on trade policy and beef imports has real impacts on cattle producers in rural America. USDA created and promoted a stronger "Product of the USA" label, only to abandon it and decide that MCOOL was the only option. Today's announcement is not about helping producers. It's not about putting their finger on the scale for one cattle industry group or another. It is 100% about the 74 days between now and the midterm elections

Ranchers getting $2500 a steer will try and tell us this will bankrupt them. Feeders buying $300 losers, will now have $600 losers.
Then the market will go to all time new highs.
