The people who have lived here for three generations do not produce babies as reliably as the people who arrived here as immigrants. The population will fall without immigration.

Foreigners are a different demographic. I think importing millions of them is closer to demographic suicide.

Worked out well for the Native Americans.

It wasn't just corporate greed. It was consumer greed. We all want everything cheap. That's what introduced China as the main manufacturer of everything we buy. Americans have always and will always want a lot of stuff for the cheapest price. Hard to do that with high labor costs.

Of course Forbes has to throw in that US will suffer labor supply problems and growth problems because Forbes hates Americans.

At an estimated 340+ million people, there is no shortage of labor in the US.

The world has a limited supply of the best brains. America has, traditionally, done a good job of creating a disproportionate concentration of innovation and prosperity by importing the best brains that other countries would turn loose. I see no reason to interfere with a system that works.

You're not going to build either the Manhattan Project or the Apollo program without immigrants.

On the flip side:

You're not going to build either the Manhattan Project or the Apollo program with the low skilled pool of immigrants the US predominantly imports.

In addition, the US did not import millions of people to build the Manhanttan Project and Apollo prgram. It was extremely selective and should continue to be extremely selective.

Also, given today's technology, there is no need to import non-laborers unless you are concerned about security, but in that case why would you rely on (put your trust in) a temporary foreign national?

Correct. And forgetting for a moment the thugs, cartel types, the criminals, etc. that came across the border, you are left with Juan and Juanita. Juan will mow yards and Juanita change sheets and clean rooms at one of the Patel's motels, but neither will contribute anything to something like the Manhattan Project or the Apollo program. Good Lord, that was some major goaltending!

Part of the calculus has to include the metric NILF (Not in the Labor Force). America has millions of people able to work but not willing to. Not choosing to. Not searching.

Are some on the government dole? Maybe. Some probably have access to baby boomer generation wealth. Who knows.

But the federal labor participation rate is dropping (now at 61%). That's not healthy for the economy today or in the future.

There are millions of jobs available now (not filled by immigrant or otherwise) and millions of people able to do those jobs but not choosing to.

We have a larger problem than just "immigrants are taking our jobs".

We have enough leeches on the welfare system as it is from actual legal citizens, we don't need any more from migrants like we have been seeing the last couple of decades. It has to stop somewhere.

My cousin has a kid who has three kids all age 5 or younger, three different fathers, three different ethnicities. The father of the oldest at least pays $800/month (or so I'm told) in child support, the father of the middle kid has never been determined, the father of the third is known but doesn't contribute anything, but she says he "promises to help"

All that aside, she lives with the kids in a subsidized apartment (and was even able to upgrade to a 2-bedroom with even lower rent after the third kid was born), is on medicaid, gets almost-free daycare through Cooks, is also on WIC, foodstamps and everything else possible, yet still complains and wants help with living expenses since she is doing this "all by herself"

Long story short, we have enough welfare burdens from idiots like my cousin's kid, we don't need more from people who are actually smart enough to game the system.

Shut migration down for a while and try to let the system reset.

Stop all immigration for 10 years. Those who came here illegally in the past 10 years have six months to sell their possessions and leave. Failure to do so means they forfeit anything they own and can never return here, not even via the proper process down the road. As far as the "labor shortage" goes, stop any and all assistance to the able bodied people in this country and if they want to eat, they provide the labor at whatever the going rate is.

Yea, that'll get all those missing machinists and healthcare workers back into the workforce. A generalized labor shortage is not the same as a specialized labor shortage, which we objectively have.

America won't need cheap immigrant labor in the future. Robots are going to do most of those jobs.

America needs to get rid of those immigrants that just came here for handouts and those not planning on assimilating into American culture.

Obviously these Muslims chanting death to America needs to go, all the Somali in Minnesota need to go, every illegal criminal needs to go and every immigrant on gov assistance needs to go.

So was the US Govt sleeping?
it is their jobs to rein in corporate greed and set the standards.

I hate corporations but the ultimate fault lies on the politicians.

I never knew the charge to the government was to reign in greed. I'm not sure there is an agreed upon definition for greed. Anti-trust efforts I get but I don't think that was the reference earlier. Anyhow, it's driven by the consumer and the stock-holder. They drive the cost. Directly.

19 MILLION worker years?!?! Yeah, that doesn't sound made up at all.

With all the illegal immigration under Brandon we don't need more people.

As well, so long as we have people living in wegare we don't need more people, legal or not.

Immigrating to the USA is NOT a right, we should be very selective, and letting in only a few thousand to ten thousand per year IMHO (individuals and families).

You won't have enough people to support the social security Ponzi scheme, unless you import those people.

We are okay with it. We will create robots to wipe our butts when we are 96.

a 33% to 50% reduction in legal immigrants is pretty fair since your boy let 21M unknown illegals storm the border in 4 years. Anger should be directed at Sleepy Joe, and not Trump.

We have plenty of Americans that could use jobs. Maybe let's hit the pause button for a few years and see how we do without the "super genius" Student Drivers you see all over town. The market will adjust and I'm sure we will be just fine.

How does restricting illegal or legal immigration affect the Paxton / Talarico Senate race? All you have is comparing a Jew who works for Trump to the Nazi Joseph Goebbels. Such a woefully weak argument.

About 1/5 of the Texas population is foreign born. Intentionally alienating 1/5 of the population is not the brightest strategy that I've ever seen.

There are plenty of legal immigrants who should not be allowed here. Anchor babies are one of them. They should go back with their parents. "Asylum seekers" that just lied to get in should also go back. People brought in intentionally by companies looking to import cheap labor in competitive fields with plenty of Americans who have invested in their education and careers should have to go back. Chain migrants in which the whole family gets sponsored should have to go back.

I have no problems with vetted spouses and limited immigration. Heck, my own wife wasn't born here and was legally adopted and brought to the US as an infant. I simply don't want the system to be taken advantage of to the detriment of American citizens.

What is wrong with a policy that every immigrant legally admitted to the United States must be assessed as a net-positive benefit to the United States both economically and culturally? There is no justification for putting dross in the melting pot.

Nobody need apply that is going to be claiming welfare or family members that will be welfare dependents (including Medicaid, SNAP, EBT, etc). Nobody that doesn't read and speak fluent English need apply. Nobody that isn't willing to leave behind cultural traditions of cousin marriage, buggery of boys or girls, butchering domestic animals or waterfowl at the park, killong apostates, honor killings, and nobody that has a problem with removing head and face coverings for driver's license photographs need apply.

The US has done this before in the Johnson-Reed Immigration Act of 1924 and it had tremendous benefits for the nation in solidifying both national identity and unity. There will always be room for the Einsteins, Fermis, Tellers, and von Neumans.
