Could a song made out of Dixie, All My Trials, and Battle Hymn of the Republic be made today without being protested and cancelled? Was it only accepted because it was Elvis that did it? I don't remember anyone hating on this song when I was growing up. How do you think it would fare today?
God loves you so much He'll meet you where you are. He also loves you too much to allow to stay where you are.
When was the last time FTAB played The Blue Gray Medley?
Even in my day, folks were whining about Blue-Grey Medley
So (then) Major Haney took out Dixie and substituted Bonnie Blue Flag
Since this was pre-Internet, no one realized that he took out a sentimental song about a black man who missed his home in the South, and replaced it with a secessionist anthem
Dixie was originally a part of American history - south AND north - written by a guy in Ohio and popular across the country. …more so in "the land of cotton" that it nostalgically references - the south. Then in the second half of the 20th century it occurred to someone that they could virtue-signal by ascribing villainous human traits to dots on a piece of paper and the accompanying words.
When was the last time FTAB played The Blue Gray Medley?
The last time we played the Blue Grey Medley that contained "Dixie" was my fish year, Fall 1988.
As I recall, somebody got pissed off and wrote a letter to the Battalion which resulted in us never playing Dixie again. One of my fish buddies recalls it slightly differently and says that it was a Black female sophomore who complained that it was racist. I don't remember it that way and there were plenty of Black dudes in the Aggie Band who never complained (as far as I know).
There was definitely a letter to the Batt that complained about us playing "The Patton Theme" as it gave the impression that the Corps of Cadets and Aggies were "warmongers".
So... we stopped playing Patton for a few weeks. When we brought it back, the passback for the song, instead of yelling "Patton", I heard a bunch of guys yelling "Warmonger" instead.

Hilarious
This reminds me...
Yes, there were multiple versions of the Blue-Grey Medley and some of them did not contain Dixie but rather contained Bonnie Blue Flag.
Since I grew up in Puerto Rico, Alaska and Saudi Arabia, Civil War history was a genuine gap in my knowledge during my time at A&M and even afterwards when I went through the US Army Armor School at Fort Knox.
One of the things I didn't realize until I met other 2LTs from Alabama, Tennessee, Virginia (VMI), Louisiana, etc. that for a lot of these guys, The Civil War was still an every day conscious thing for them. Not really anything that people in Texas talked about too much (I'm not a "real" Texan so feel free to flame away).
Anyway, during my time at Fort Knox, the movie "Gettysburg" was released and a bunch of us went to see it in the theater.
During one of the scenes with the Confederate Army, their band is playing "Bonnie Blue Flag" and some people are singing along. I had no idea there were words.
Aggie Word - that was the first time I had any idea that the Aggie Band had been low key playing a Confederate song after Dixie was removed from the line up.
We didn't have the Internet back then and certainly not on our phones so that's how I learned that fact.
Funny. I'm headed back to Alabama for a reunion. I put together my "Dixie" playlist I was heading home. This was the 4th song I selected .
I highly recommend visiting Gettysburg and walking Picketts charge. Quite the experience. My Great-Great Grandad was wounded during the charge and taken prisoner.
My high school ascot was Rebels. We flew a confederate battle flag, and Dixie was the fight song. I graduated in 1985, and no one said spit about it. This was in an Austin suburb too. A few years later, they decided to get rid of the battle flag.
Fast forward to about 2015, and Dixie is still the fight song. Lots of pearlclutchers from Austin have taken over the school district. They decide that not only does Dixie need to go, the Rebel Mascot does too. The mascot becomes the Hawks, and fight song is now On Wisconsin because it is easy for the kids to play (tons of schools use the melody).
About 3-4 years ago there was a viral video of a high school volleyball player getting spiked in the face. It was from my high school. An old highschool friend posted it on Facebook. I joked that it was karma for changing the mascot. A black female who I had gone to school with decades ago saw my comment. She had apparently consumed the Black Panther Kool Aid and starts ripping me and talking about all the hurting black people in the community. She promptly got block. Ain't got no time for that.
Elvis can be forgiven. He was probably on his third Robitussin, quaalude with Pepsi cocktail.
Can you imagine how much better his later career would have been if cocaine would have been his drug of choice like some of the other rockers and country singers? I don't condone or advocate hard drug use, but if I had to prescribe him one hard drug, it would not have been downers that make you fat and constipated. Would have been cocaine or methamphetamine for sure.

Elvis died in 1977 just as Disco was peaking. I am not sure I could have handled Disco Elvis, Eurotrash Elvis, Punk Elvis, Metal Elvis, or Rap Elvis. It is probably a good thing culturally that he died when he did.
Ole MIss band played "Dixie with Love" up until 2009. Dixie + Battle Hymm medly.
I was there that year in the Grove when they played it (watched OM against Arky). Very moving. Did not know it was going to go away.

That's The Imperials Quartet backing Elvis up....they went on to become a big Christian group in the next decade.
For the 73 concert in Hawaii it appears that he was backed up by JD Sumner and The Stamps, as well as the Sweet Inspirations.
People get their knickers and lederhosen twisted over songs. Deutschlandied is often frowned upon in Germany as well because, even though it had been around since the Holy Roman Empire, folks associate it with the Nazis.
And we all know how painful twisted lederhosen can be.

It was accepted because no one cried about this stuff then.

( ...voice punctuated with a clap of distant thunder... )

It was the 1970s. We all wanted to be Hugh Hefner.

Made from a confederate battle flag?
All joking aside, my high school was forced into giving up all of its confederate symbols including the Johnny Reb mascot, confederate flag, etc.

I went to Robert E Lee High school in Baytown. Graduated in mid 80's. We played Dixie and flew the confederate battle flags at all football games. Had an all female drum and bugle corp called the Brigadiers who were confederate uniforms. They took away the flags, the Brigadiers (now a Dance team named the Celebrities). They tried to take away the name of the school, but were unsuccessful. However, Baytown has a 2yr Jr College (Lee College) that had a "Rebel" mascot. That has been taken away. Lee College is now the Navigators.
I hate the left with every fiber of my being and I hate the politicians that bend the knee to them even more.

Actually, the third verse of Deutschlandlied is the official German national anthem today.
Quote:
(translation)
Unity and justice and freedom For the German fatherland! Let us strive for this together, Brotherly with heart and hand! Unity and justice and freedom Are the foundation of happiness Bloom in the radiance of this happiness, Bloom, German fatherland!
The first verse is what's associated with the Nazis, due largely to the rather generous borders it describes for Germany.
Quote:
(translation)
Germany, Germany above all, Above all in the world, When it always stands united Brotherly in protection and defence. From the Maas to the Memel, From the Etsch to the Belt, Germany, Germany above all, Above all in the world!
When the lyrics were written in 1841, these were the proposed borders of a future united Germany, and more-or-less corresponded to where the German language was spoken at the time (but the Maas was pushing it unless you count Dutch dialects as "German").
But in today's context, they constitute German territorial claims against Belgium, the Netherlands, Poland, Russia, Denmark, and Italy. Such "revanchist" statements are taboo in Germany today. However, it's not outright illegal to sing the first verse.
The one Confederate flag controversy I remember from A&M was when the Off Campus Hogs Bonfire crew was pressured to stop using it. So they replaced it with a parody version featuring two crossed axes with stars on them. And leftists still complained.

Dunn Hall had a coat of arms that had it. Dunn Hall Rebels. A friend of mine was dorm president when they decided to remove it from the coat of arm. That was roughly 1987
I remember listening to that Hawaii album at my grandmother's house in Belton on her big console radio - it was like 2 feet deep, 6 feet wide, and 3 feet tall. I remember loving that record - and even now that medley still sticks out. I wish i still had those LP's. My parents took my sister and I to see him at Hemisfair arena in 1976 - he was obviously on the downhill side, but I was 6 and remember loving it.
