The rest of the story is that for-profit grocery stores are under margin compression in Chicago because of grocery store based free-bread-lines introduced by Mamdani. Very high chance that Obama will be running a community focused farmers' market out of the Obamalisk.

The fact that prescription sales were down 25% at that location and the lease being up in August were also contributing factors, besides stuff walking out the door and not wanting your staff to be assaulted.

These people aren't just stealing because they are desperate, they are stealing and running black market businesses. And the police are so understaffed and that area is so dangerous that these black market operators are untouchable. That said, organized crime has connection to the politicians in that city.

I was in one recently. I forget where because I've been traveling a lot lately. Either LA, Philly or NY.

Every single aisle was locked up behind glass. If you needed literally ANYTHING, you had to get an employee get it for you.

That's probably the only way to give these communities functional stores. They'd be like a bank with a teller behind think bulletproof glass. You'd walk up, make an order and they'd go get it for you.

Think of it this way. The average is pumped up by inner city theft. You take out the inner city theft, and perhaps the average is ~$100K?

One of those cases where outliers really affects the "average". Good time to use median, perhaps.

No. Based on some very quick research, gross sales for a typical Walgreens in that area are around $3MM. So a 16% loss rate would equal about $480,000, and typical (4%) would equal $120,000. But, I doubt a store that lost 25% of their prescription sales was grossing $3MM. Still high though. Their NOI for that store was negative $1MM.

Pretty soon in urban areas the only type of stores you will have will be pickup only - place your order from your phone (can't use kiosks because of vandalism) and then you will be forced to pickup via a secure drop box/pickup system at the store front. 0 loss to theft (other than from employees) as well as more dense shelf storage should result in lower prices as well.

The other option some people may try is to have a double door "airlock" type system where an attendant controls who can enter/leave - you try to steal something you get locked in the airlock until police arrive, etc. But this type of system would likely require building code changes first.

You can't have first world conveniences when your surrounding community behaves like a third world s***hole

People can have their meds delivered to their homes now there is no argument for abandonment of care to be made here.

I stopped in at a Rite Aid/CVS in NYC a few months ago to grab some razor cartridges, a pair of socks, and some band-aids for my heel that was blistered up from walking. Every single item was locked behind an acrylic case. The only things not locked up were the sodas and candy and stuff.

I cant wait to hear about "food deserts" again, when the only workable solution is just to stop people from committing theft. The guy at the podium even recognizes that people are stealing stuff, but instead of demanding better behavior, he excuses it (im SHOCKED!).

In a culture that venerates a drug overdosed career-criminal, not surprising. "Hands up, dont shoot", and all of that.

Yes, they could sell online only and deliver. That would be way cheaper than the security spend plus losses from theft.

The issue then becomes: who in their right mind would deliver drugs in that community. How long before you are robbed and killed?!
