"Phelan is a businessman with no prior military service; he and his wife previously fundraised millions of dollars for Trump's campaign before he was confirmed as Navy secretary in 2025."

This administration is a ship in a storm with a drunk captain (maybe literally, right Pete?)

But according to Wikipedia he did have a $38,000,000 home in aspen , another home in palm beach so obviously he must be very smart to have that kind of real estate portfolio

I'm sure he's smart & fully qualified, but when your Navy Secretary disagrees with the First Lady on ball room chandelier selection, it's time for a new Secretary.

He got into a power play with his boss (Hegs) because he thought he had the upper hand via his great relationship with Trump, but lost in the end. Corporate story as old as time.

You think Pete is a drunk because you've been manipulated to believe so. He hasn't had a drink since he started the job. But nice try.

Tell me about it. I heard he got really pissed off at serving McDs to the NCAA football champs, too. Its important for your head admiral to be focused on the real important things to the safety of our country, amiright?

So. Was a low level I-Banker before becoming a hedge fund manager. From his charitable fundraising efforts, he sounds like a decent guy. But not one whiff of Navy or military knowledge or experience, and violated the chain of command right off the bat.

Reward your friends and donors with ambassadorships and such. But please keep them away from the military. Thank you.

Hegseth admitted to his drinking problem. As to the question of whether he has still been drinking, he might be. We don't know. His behavior as SecDef at times has been rude, erratic, bizarre, impulsive, delusionally grandiose, irrational, paranoid, and unstable. That might not be from drinking, though. It might just be who he naturally is.

Actually from what I've heard he was what was needed to right the ship in the navy (an outsider).

Two issues:

1. Trump was upset over the slow progress of shipbuilding…fixing that is like trying to build Everest with a shovel.

2. Hegseth and Feinberg were pissed at Phelan because he would go direct to Trump, and got Trump to approve the new battleship (a direction they did not want to go in).

This.

I guess we shouldn't be surprised how he got his position or his lack of qualifications.

Glad he was replaced with someone who should've had the position from day one.

I'd also read that Phelan was wanting to outsource some of the shipbuilding to foreign entities. That's just monumentally dumb.

Fair enough but those would also be identical terms to describe Winston Churchill and George Patton.

And no, I'm not putting Hegseth on a platform with those historically consequential figures, I'm just merely pointing out the fact that men can accomplish wildly significant feats of leadership all the while being described as crazy people by those whose views or motivations aren't 100% aligned at all times.

ETA: Regardless of one's alignment, they're flags that indicate a person carries high variance and can be capable of great accomplishment and great damage Whether the upside materializes depends on whether the person actually has the compensating gifts, and you usually can only tell in retrospect. He could very well be a disaster with Churchill's flaws and none of his gifts. The track record is the judge, not the personality.
