He shut down the Chicken Ranch!

Yea, no love for Marvin if for that reason alone.

Plus, slime in the ice machine won't kill you.

While Marvin may have been the villain for shutting down a Texas shady institution, the bigger picture was probably exposing the sheriff who was corrupt and allowing a lot of worse activity to exist in his county.

Painful to watch though as Chip got sicker and sicker.

Good night, David.

Good night, Chet.

They would sign on right after a last drag off a cigarette and put it in ashtray. You could see the smoke on our black and white TV.

One could set your clock at about 11 when Dave Ward would appear at Kay's lounge on Bissonette . in Houston I dont know how he didnt have the shakes next day. Later, I think he cleaned up his drinking problem.

As an 18 year old pizza delivery driver back in 1989, Yana Pounders was an exceptionally nice customer and an exceptional news anchor in East Texas. Ten pm news followed by 10:30 Cheers was the norm.

Sherriff Jim was definitely a shoot first and ask questions later type of LEO, and had more than his fair share of detainees that "accidently" bashed their head into a car door jam. But when it came to the Chicken Ranch, no one really cared about it. My grandmother sold Amway to the ladies that worked there, (good repeat business there, lol). She still has two of the lamps she bought with Amway points that we affectionately refer to as the "***** lamps." Hell, Miss Edna even sponsored Little League teams. If there was other crime and corruption causing problems, the Chicken Ranch was not one of them.

As a kid in the 80's I don't really have any favorite "old school" anchors because over time we learned they were all just propaganda pieces for dems, we just didn't really get it then.

In the here and now, I think John Roberts, Martha MacCallum, Dana Perino, and Bill Hemmer are all very good.

If you grew up in Shreveport in the 1960s-1990s, you likely got your local TV news from KSLA channel 12--and these three.

Don Owen - Anchor (Center)
Al Bolton - Weather (Left)
Bob Griffin - Sports (Right)

No nonsense delivery of the 5 W's, and no opinions.

That was a fun show to watch and I did week after week in my 20's. That particular episode was great as it captured the moment Clinton took office and had all kinds of administration problems pop up. His AG pick was found to have hired an illegal immigrant nanny. His inaugural speech was long and boring. He had just picked Hillary for the position of recasting America's healthcare system (which spectacularly failed and sidelined Hillary for the next 8 years.

Walter Cronkite with no competition. On a side note, my grandfather graduated with Walter in Houston.

Uncle Walter is often pointed to as the gold standard. But in 1968 he reported the Tet Offensive as a resounding North Vietnamese victory and a crushing defeat for the US, when the truth was the complete opposite. Nonetheless, it turned American opinion against the war.

I grew up watching ABC national followed by ABC-13 Houston because that's what my parents preferred. Peter Jennings, while perhaps not quite middle of the road, was always professional and more of the old-school journalist/anchor.

We couldn't stand Dan Rather. He always came off as a fake preacher, or the prosecutor from My Cousin Vinny.

Dave had quite the reputation as a partier and ladies man about town.

Does anyone remember when Dave participated in a charity motocross event, crashed and wound up in the hospital? I remember channel 13 filming from his hospital room.

I miss the Bob Allens and Darryl Bruffets of the sports world.

Locally, KBTX news has turned to trash. The late night crew is like all the people you used to ignore in high school. From (especially) the anchors to sports (Travis Brown is soooo annoying) to special stories (someone recharge Dylan Christ Watkins batteries. Least energy of anyone under 25 yrs old I have seen on TV). The weather girls are the best part. Lol

I was there - he was lucky he didn't die. And whoever thought it would be a good idea for celebs to race motorcross should have been fired on the spot.

Dave was flying though!

Peter Jennings died 20 years ago so he missed a lot of the woke, outrageous, lying, insane leftist bull**** to the extreme it is today, but I think he would have gone down the same path sadly.

now that's the GOAT team of Houston.

Houston had amazing news teams back in those days. At one time the big three anchors were Dave, Ron, and Steve Smith. Amazing talent for one town.

I'll add a shoutout for ABC's Frank Reynolds (mentioned once early in the thread), Howard K Smith and Harry Reasoner. We were an ABC national and local news household, so I remember them and all the Channel 13 anchors the most. Then ABC added Barbara Walter's who my dad didn't like, but I don't remember ever changing to NBC (he hated Cronkite for being a lib).

He probably would have, but this is my answer. Peter Jennings delivered news in a manner that was easy to digest. And yes, Rather always came off as the journalism professor at some lib school, in that he knew more than you because he as much smarter than you and you were lucky to have him. Couldn't stand him.

Yeah I'd place 2 and 13 as 1A and 1B. I liked Stone and Johnson better. Their 5PM broadcast was pretty funny. And Jan Carson was better looking than Shara Fryer.

I'll give Ed Brandon (cocaine) and Dave Ward (alcohol) credit for their unabashed party lifestyle.
