Surely Trump knows that it's the Brit insurance companies stopping the ships from transiting the strait until new policies are negotiated, not the weakened Iranians.

Nope. Trump has promised the U.S. will underwrite the insurance coverage and provide naval escorts so the ships can sail through the strait. That is news on another F-16 thread. Lloyds of London is toast. And Starmer is a wanker---still another F-16 thread.

Curious (for those who know things), can tankers turn off their transponders and lights to avoid Iranian anti ship missiles at night? If the Iranians use radar/IR to scan for ships can we not lock on and destroy those scanning systems??

That's already happening, Trump gave Lloyds the finger and the US Navy is insuring their safe passage with raw firepower. Ships have been passing through the Strait of Hormuz all day and night.

Saw this in Instagram but not sure it's accurate. The guy is saying that Itmar Ben-Gavr, Israel's Director of National Security, was injured in an Iranian attack. The BBC is claiming it's a car crash. Someone is lying. There's a ton of propaganda on both sides. It's really hard to get a real feel for what's going on.

I can't believe either side isn't telling the truth during a war…

That one looks like some kind of secondary explosion. They might have hit a major weapons/ammo bunker.

Guess it could also be the B-2s are dropping GBU-57s tonight.

there is a longer video of that one that starts with a bright blue "arc light" flash/explosion then that huge fireball explosion shown in that video.

eta. this video shows it. I think it is more likely we hit some sort of electrical infrastructure but who knows

furthermore, this is the official position (referenced from the above video) indicating vessels should stay out of the strait

2026-0001B-Strait of Hormuz, Persian Gulf, Gulf of Oman, and Arabian Sea-Military Operations and Potential Retaliatory Strikes by Iranian Forces and Proxy Forces | MARAD

Quote:

Significant military activity continues in the geographic areas listed above. It is recommended that vessels keep clear of this area if possible. Any U.S.-flagged, owned, or crewed commercial vessels that are operating in these areas should maintain a minimum standoff of 30 nautical miles from U.S. military vessels to reduce the risk of being mistaken as a threat and are strongly encouraged to maintain close contact with Naval Forces Central Command (NAVCENT) Naval Coordination and Guidance for Shipping (NCAGS) and review the latest UKMTO and Joint Maritime Information Center Advisories at https://www.ukmto.org/ukmtoproducts/advisories/2026 and https://www.ukmto.org/partner-products/jmic-products. The risk mitigation measures addressed in U.S. Maritime Advisory 2026-001 (Iranian Illegal Boarding/Detention/Seizure Strait of Hormuz and Gulf of Oman) should also be reviewed and implemented well in advance of entering this region. Further updates will be provided when available.
This alert will automatically expire on March 13th, 2026.

It takes a long time to replenish/rebuild solid rocket motor production capacity if lost (or to ramp it up significantly, which we also face for A2A and ground interceptors alike).

Tehran got pounded overnight (as did Bandar Abbas), with bunker busters etc. it sounds like. Unclear if the newest 'supreme leader' is dead yet or not. Trump sort of equivocated about it being 'almost over' vs. 'just starting' as Hegseth said. Maersk cancelled all shipments thru gulf through the 21st of March (cargo not oil).

Aragchi is still talking trash, but the economic reality of the IRGC's oil revenues (and drug trade) getting taken off line will impact their ability to meet payroll imminently imho. I am looking for indications of Sepah bank's collapse/insolvency.

Hegseth reiterated to us this morning what the Iran War mission objectives are:

1- Destroy Iran's missile stockpiles, their missile launchers and their defense industrial base. (Missiles and their ability to make them).

2- Destroy their Navy.

3- Permanently deny Iran nuclear weapons forever.

We will not relent until the enemy is totally and decisively defeated.

A lot was accomplished. The country is basically neutered. They were in the middle of economic collapse before this. Now their military has collapsed. And there will be internal fighting over the Khamenei pick. They bashed dynastic rule and now started the Khamenei dynasty which will turn people off. Iran is going to be too busy rebuilding to worry about Israel. Half the country still hates the regime and is pissed off and they need to appease them and that's not by diverting resources to proxies.

well said Dan

let's not forget that it is much tougher to threaten the world when:

your entire Navy of 34 ships is at the bottom of the Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean

your entire Air Force of 500 platforms has been blown up and bases wrecked

your ballistic missile fleet has been massively destroyed and you have shot away 80% of your inventory

and most importantly- if you have no way to rebuild launchers / missiles / nuclear bombs

This is not a 'military action' per se but I don't think it's political either, and is a direct consequence of the US/IAF targetting their criminal enterprise operation/cashflow via oil storage sites, Tehran airport, and significant reduction in tankers getting filled, to say nothing of their involvment(s) in narcotics trade via Venezuela and Hezbollah/Europe etc. Something like half of their GDP runs through the IRGC which is a business empire in as much as anything else.

Again, the next critical step would be the IRGC rank and file not getting paid. Still not ready to speculate that is happening yet, but it cannot be far from reality, after their economic collapse/currency collapse in January that triggered all of the protests in the first place.
ETA: apparently also related to a nominally Israeli hack attack today.

Question for those with military background. Wondering about our stockpile of bombs/missiles, etc. Realistically how long at the current rate of use would it roughly last and how long to replenish to pre-operation levels?

Depends the exact munition.

HIMARS we do not have a ton of as we also send them to Ukraine and they are in high demand.

we have probably a decade worth of JDAM available bombs.

The U.S. has produced and stockpiled JDAMs in the hundreds of thousands.

Boeing (the manufacturer) has produced over 500,000 JDAM guidance kits since the program began in the 1990s, with deliveries to the U.S. military and allied nations.

JDAMs are guidance kits (GPS/INS tail assemblies) that convert unguided "dumb" bombs into precision-guided munitions.

They're attached to standard bomb bodies (Mk-82, Mk-83, Mk-84, etc.), so the total count depends on both the kits and available bomb bodies.

You'll easily find a lot of doomsaying when that is asked, specifically to solid rocket motors. The typical lead time to ramp up production for these I think is around 14-18 months.

One of the few good news stories though from the Biden era is that we did manage to scale up industrially to produce these, somewhat of a consequence of another conflict. Not to support our rate of fire vs. Iran the past two weeks, but I expect that will continue to decrease over the next few weeks.

I don't have any idea when we'd hit a critical inventory of Thaad/Standard/Pac3 interceptors. But we also need such (smaller) motors for many of our other (offensive) weapons like Tomahawks etc.

I am not responding claiming any real expertise in this stuff and I think it is a problem but one that is getting addressed;
