I find this troubling that deployment issues, 'secret' ones at that are being published. Telling your enemies where your troops are seems....punishable.

Deployments are rarely secret for very long, imho, of large units. And, I don't really trust the source there, in any case. It's highly improbable our next step is 'forced entry' to Kharg Island. Maintaining/building a capability/plan as an option though makes some sense.

I was very curious how the Israeli's pulled that off from 'outside Iranian air space' and that would explain it I guess. We are now in the 'air launched ballistic missile' era.

Interesting. Unmanned air, land and sea vehicles are steadily taking over more and more crewed mission sets.

yes this was the first time the US NAVY used an unmanned drone ship to go rescue the Army pilots

no idea how they got out of the Apache over water

but it's a pretty big miracle.

Goes to show the impossibility of "winning" this thing. We stepped into a Holy war in which both sides will forever have the capabilities to continue the war. I'm not sure where the off ramp is but to Trump's credit he seems determined to find one. I just don't how futile that is.

You and others continue to miss that POTUS is Commander-in-Chief of our armed forces so he alone will decide when and if a "ceasefire" is over.

You are somewhat of a military 'historian', I would expect you to understand this more than others.

So they shot down a drone last week and chopper this week. I was never for this war and want it to end but Trump cant continue to make us look weak. Seems like they have made some serious upgrade on air defense systems.

Shipping through Hormuz is on the rise (dramatic according to some), oil in the mid $80's, but Iran is mopping the floor with our military.

Exactly how did you arrive at us looking "weak" because we don't drop a nuke when a toy is broken.

We can win the hell out of this war. We are holding ourselves back because we don't want to pay the price it would take to do so, and it may not be necessary if a treaty or settlement will achieve our aims.

No need to resume the drubbing if we still have a window to get our desired results without it.


If we really want to, we can bomb their economy into effective nonexistence in a month or so and leave them in the dark ages and unable to purchase any arms or material with which to build them for a long long time due to complete and lasting economic collapse. We just pity the oppressed part of their population too much to take that path so far.

There is no way to parachute out of an Apache.

so it had to be that the pilot was able to crash land into the Gulf and then the crew was able to miraculously get out before the helicopter sank:

Survival knife (can break canopy)
Emergency locator beacon (ELT/PLB)
Survival vest with signaling gear"

Iran started with a significant number of foreign purchased and domestically produced systems, then used decoys & antenna relays, shoot and scoot tactics, and various jamming methods to help misdirect attacks. Some hardware that was damaged has likely been repaired. Plenty has been replaced by China who was flying in cargo planes even during the peak of the bombing campaign.

It seems that it's a really difficult job to be employed/conscripted in a unit with an active radar emitter with little to no success to show for their efforts and losses. Meanwhile they have had success with IR/Thermal? SAMs - though at seemingly much shorter engagement ranges.

Development and deployment of a long range SAM that pairs long range radar detection and mid range course steering system with a terminal phase IR/thermal seeker will totally upset US Air strategy in the not too distant future.

I find it hard to believe that at the height of our bombing we were giving clear passage to Chine cargo planes for resupply. Would seem to be a big story… with the proverbial if true.

I would think it more likely that China aircraft landed in Pakistan and shuttled supplies across border

I do not believe that would have occurred in any significant and certainly not impactful quantity.

That doesn't make any sense. CSAR is inherently very dangerous. Any time you can reduce the risk of making the situation worse by losing MORE men and/or equipment is a smart move, not one of desperation.

And losing a drone and a helicopter is not grounds for panicking - those are 2 of the easiest things flying in the air to knock out of the sky.

Remember the lesson from the film Saving Private Ryan - is one man's (in this case, two men's lives) worth the lives of several others? Yeah, we could send in live assets to recover those airmen, but with all the live fire still going on, it's likely that we lose additional personnel. Trump is not making us look weak in recovering our guys by using drone boats here.
