The amount of people in this thread prepared to go to war with Europe over Greenland is frightening.

Because we are laughing at how weak these European nation's military are?

THAT means we want to go to war? WOW! Holy leap there, Batman.

Bout 99.9% sure this would just be an advance party sent to help plan and strategize following/potential follow on forces with the locals. We do this too for every deployment ever. I've been a part of it myself. But Fox has to clickbait a title of course and disingenuously misrepresent an action.

Any actual force from Europe would be no more imposing. That's the point. Europe cannot defend Greenland. They made that decision decades ago. Socialism is a failure.

Troops from several European countries deployed to Greenland and are on the ground there Thursday for a quick two-day mission to bolster the territory's defenses.

France, Germany, Sweden and Norway are participating in the exercise, Fox News has learned. Leaders say the mission is meant to demonstrate they can deploy military assets "quickly."

The development comes as the Trump administration is pushing to acquire the Danish territory. Germany deployed a reconnaissance team of 13 personnel, France sent 15 mountain specialists and Sweden, Norway and Britain sent three, two and one officers, respectively, according to Reuters.

Just Europe europing. 35 individuals now equals "several countries sending in troops to bolster defenses."

Did they request help from the US for the air transport?

I don't think anyone wants to go to war over Greenland, and I don't think there is the slightest chance that we will.

We are mocking the feckless, testosterone-free Europeans. They couldn't thwart an invasion of cockroaches.

And we shouldn't. If Greenland wants to vote for independence from the Danes, then let them. If they then want to become a state or territory of the US, then fine. Us trying to just take it would be no different than China trying to take Taiwan or Russia trying to take Ukraine IMHO.

I don't think there is any intention of us "taking" Greenland. We want to buy it. Europe can't defend it.

Hawaii was occupied by the United States following the overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy in 1893, which led to its annexation in 1898. This occupation is considered by some to be illegal under international law, as it occurred without the consent of the Hawaiian people.

Seemed to have worked out for Hawaii in the long term

I have text groups that could defeat those European "forces," if they were so motivated.

I could hit the feed store in Goliad in November and round up enough guys in an hour to defeat that.

I agree that they could not defend Greenland. That is not the point of the OP. And several brigades is certainly more imposing than a platoon sized element. And not just from an actual combat power perspective but an overall global stability standpoint.

Oh no argument there but it is a different world in 2026 than it was in 1898. It would be in our best interest to possess Greenland but if you ask Denmark or China or Russia, they will also tell you the same. Ultimately it comes down to who can defend it and Denmark cannot "IF" NATO which basically means the U.S. does not come to their aid if Russia or China made a move.

I understand but what if the people of Greenland aren't buying what we are selling? Hell look how many U.S. citizens are ready to secede from the union. The U.S. isn't what it used to be, and we it looks like we are heading for a national divorce at some point in the future.

I agree but the position of everyone else is "not a damned chance". So what then? Trump seems to be pretty adamant about having it and the damned thing is, I don't disagree with that either. I am of the mind that a hot war with China is coming within our lifetimes and probably much, much sooner rather than later. Having Greenland is an absolute strategic no brainer. It would essentially give us the complete geological fence we would need for another potential large scale kinetic war. If Trump treats this as a binary must have, and the Danes won't give it up?

Next year is going to be extremely interesting IMO.

You're not wrong but again isn't Russia essentially saying the same thing about Ukraine? It used to be theirs, at least some of the Ukrainians want to be Russian again, Russia does not want a larger potential NATO boarder on their doorstep so by this logic if they can take it we should be ok with it right? Ukraine is not in NATO and they are not a real ally so why should we care right?

On paper, yes. But reality is different. Russia uses that excuse to justify aggression. NATO is not and has not, ever taken preemptive hostile action. Simply not objectively true on the flip side. NATO exists because of Russian aggression at this point and for the last three generations.

But yes, I am not comfortable with using force to coerce Greenland to come under our flag. But I understand the need for it when looking at it from a purely strategic viewpoint as an American that is likely going to be at war with a hostile nation that also has sights on that land. It's why I said "the damned thing is…".

To be clear though, I am extremely doubtful that we take any sort of actual forceful military action Greenland. Like, I would be floored if we do. We have so much to lose if we do. I think Trump is playing strong man again and seeing what shakes out. Personally, not always a fan of that type of politicking but with a bit of urgency at play here perhaps, eh. And I have definitely been wrong before.
