Will bet you it's the Romantasy genre. Women have completely taken over mainstream fantasy and science fiction. It's really damn annoying. Unless you know where to look, you can't just show up to your local bookstore and peruse normal sci-fi or fantasy much anymore.

Our local bookstore is run by a woman and the only fantasy she carries is Romantasy. My wife has even gotten into some of it and she hates romance novels but there is enough fantasy element to it that it's not straight up soft porn.

For some people who are inherently predisposed to having an issue with it, sure. It's like any other activity that provides a dopamine hit. Some folks can handle booze, pot, gambling, porn, whatever, without addiction. Others can't.

Plenty of reasons to demonize pron but I think that the inability of a subset of the population to handle it without getting addicted falls within the same scope as any other potentially addictive activity. And no, I'm not particularly a fan of the stuff overall.

I have a friend of a friend that used to write trashy romantasy novels using AI. He said that everyone has gotten used to AI now and people get turned off by the AI sounding text, so he got out of the business. Said he made a couple grand a month as a side gig for a couple of years.

He got in trouble one time for not proofing his story well enough and what he self-published was so way over the line, something about a dragon that romanced and then devoured his love interests, and that the place where he sold his books made him take it down, but it sold well while it was up.
