Both. We have a lot of Californians here but it seems we get the ones trying to get away from the liberal mess there. Idaho, Colorado, Wyoming and Montana are getting the crazies I think. Charlie Kirk really helped register and enlighten a lot of people here.

Hegseth is a Major O-4 with the USMC
Kelly is a Ret. Capt. in the Navy. Navy uses weird rank names but a Navy Captian is O-6 and comparable to a Colonel in the Army or MC.

Here's my question. If you look up Kelly's Naval career he served 1986 -- 2011. BUT he joined NASA and the Astronaut Corps in 1996. I presume he continued promotion once an Astronaut as there is NO WAY IN HELL he made O-6 10 years in. He would have I presume at best been a Lt. Cmdr O-4 at 10 years and maybe running a an air wing?

So based on military career and experience I'm guessing he's roughly on par with Sec War, but why are the Astronauts allowed to continue their military careers and especially continue promotion?

Always been that way since the days of John Glenn and the Mercury 7. They are military personnel with an assignment to NASA.

So they're courtesy promotions...

Don't get me wrong flying the space shuttle is fully and totally freaking cool. But that doesn't make you a better or more qualified War fighter.

Neither does being a doctor but the military needs them.

Getting into the astronaut corps is harder and takes more than being promoted to colonel. I've only done one of them personally.

It's a minor point but Hegseth was an Army Major.

To the point of your question, once a uniformed service member goes to the astronaut program, they will almost certainly get promoted along with their year group of officers in their branch of service. They are considered water-walkers to have been selected for the astronaut program so they don't get left behind. There's also the fact that having an astronaut is a point of pride for the service. Passing over an astronaut for promotion would be a strong disincentive for any officer to apply. That's pretty much the explanation for why Charlie Bolden went to NASA as. Major in 1980 and returned 14 years later as. Brigadier General.

When I worked for Salesforce, I knew then when they had Kelly on stage with Mark Cuban that he was a liberal POS. This was before we found out what a liberal POS he is.

During the Gemini & Apollo programs, the Navy practice was to promote any astronaut one grade after each space flight, irrespective of year-group or time in-grade. Gene Cernan, whose actual badassery was so pronounced that it very nearly mirrored his self-image, benefitted greatly from this. Dude made Captain in record time.
