Good God Texas...you archaic PoS. Get with the fn' times and just legalize it all...GD.

I'm not even a consumer of any of it....I just really disagree with any government or governing body giving themselves the authority to ban a naturally occurring plant or any of it's components/derivatives.

Also hard drugs?

The issue I have with legalization is I'm on the hook to pay for the negative effects on society.
Psssssttttttt!!!!!

You are on the hook regardless.

Me? I'd rather see people smoke cheap weed or eat cheap gummies than keep seeing my insurance premiums continue to rise with no end in site because they are instead on 3 or 4 different meds, opiods, etc. that aren't cheap.

The whole "i don't want to pay for somebody smoking weed" is a poor argument. Until our entire society divests itself from how we currently operate with healthcare, it will make no appreciable difference in increasing costs and probably has a higher chance of decreasing costs than anything.

Peoples' experiences with THC shops must vary drastically by location and experience. Those near me are clean and high end, with very normal looking people as clientele. The one nearest me looks like it could be any boutique retail shop. Clean, well lit, high end decor/finishes. Doesn't sell any smoking/pot gear. Shares the strip center with a yoga studio, dry cleaner, optometrist. Looks far less seedy than many liquor stores I see. I'm sure there are low end ones out there but that's the same for the variance you see between a lot of strip center retail.

Yeah, let's keep everything in the underground black market. That really worked out well for us in the past.

And yeah, I'm for full legalization of EVERYTHING. Tens of thousands of people are dying because everything is on the black market and cut with all kinds of dangerous *****

Make Cocaine Great Again

We don't need people dying of fentanyl overdose for simply picking up an 8-ball.

A black market will still exist because the drugs will be taxed and regulated, which drives up the cost significantly. Look at states that legalized marijuana, like CO. Huge black market.
A black market exists in CO because CO is an island where it is legal. Remove the fact that everywhere around CO is illegal and it becomes just like alcohol and cigs here.

Both have a black market, but it is so damned small that nobody really pays attention to it. I couldnt' even tell you where I could buy black market cigarettes. It's never crossed my mind to try to find them. I have to try pretty hard to find me moonshine anymore either. I can find it, but I have to put in some effort. Way more effort than driving 10 minutes to the nearest Specs or Total wine and having a massive selection of bourbon and tequila to choose from that wasn't made in a garage or bathtub. No reason to seek out black market beer when I can go to Bucees and get it off the shelf, legally. Legal weed would mean not have to worry that some chollo in Juarez decided to toss a little fentanyl or angel dust in just to mess with the stupid gringo up north that is buying his stuff.

We tried the whole "make a vice illegal" thing once back in the 20's. Didn't work out very well. In fact, all it did was create a huge black market, create crime, create government bureaucracies to combat the crime that government created (funny how that works) and ultimately the light bulb came on that making alcohol illegal didn't work, so it became legal again. And boom....the black market disappeared almost overnight.

Just got my response from Abbott's office after emailing a day or two ago. Apparently he has until June 22, 2025 to sign this bill into effect. I really hope Abbott does the right thing here.

You can reach out to him here: https://gov.texas.gov/apps/contact-us/opinion

I feel like Abbott has been quite measured in response to certain things, and maybe he could benefit from sticking his neck out there more. This is a chance to do the right and be a leader, not a follower.

it does vary and that is a problem cause alot of them are TOO well lit. the flashiness just reeks of something you see in a red light district. fair chance we aren't even having this discussion right now if the shop owners knew how to be discreet.

Im not sure if theyve overestimated public sentiment on marijuana, or if they are just overzealous businessmen, but the advertisement is the main issue that needs rectifying IMO.

One of the funniest posts I've seen in awhile. Go join an HOA board then, sheesh.

You guys are whining about zoning and property restrictions. Take it up with the shopping center owner who allowed the gaudy decor.
CNN is an enemy of the state and should be treated as such.

I get what you're saying, but there are plenty of other businesses with tacky, obtrusive, annoying advertising. Actual head/smoke shops, for one. Free standing ERs on every corner with their neon advertising. And any business that has those giant LED billboards that are brighter than the sun and blind you at night. And numerous others. That falls on municipalities to regulate if it's determined to be an issue. And nobody seems concerned with regulating other types of business with the same issues.

I don't believe that "it sometimes annoys me" is a reasonable justification for outlawing all businesses of a type at the state level. Though sometimes I impulsively wish I could from time to time.

the aesthetic doesn't "annoy" me. drawing attention to a controversial business that I want to keep LEGAL is what annoys me.

I'm confident that the advertising wasn't what pushed Dan Patrick over the edge in pursuing this ban. I don't disagree that the advertising is unnecessarily flashy, however.

I don't see how the shop aesthetics are any worse that the cash for gold, payday loan, pawn shops, furniture/mattress warehouses, 24 hour gyms, dollar trees, discount tax processors, Dominos, or liquor stores that inhabit these soulless strip malls.

Or he can wait until after the deadline and the bill becomes law automatically without his signature. That's what I expect to happen

I see we are now down to arguing about the aesthetics of THC shops now. I guess progress has been made in this debate it seems.

What next? I'll check back in when an even more absurd point is made by the anti-THC folks.

Ahhhh, so you are one of those types. The type that is constantly terrified the other side will yank your right out from under you, so the only way to keep that from happening is to not upset them.

Lots of people like that with 2a rights as well. I don't get it.

Man, that poor guy. Patrick is just one of those guys that wants to 'do something' to maintain any level of relevancy....I've known folks like this my whole life. No real thinking involved here just "get off my lawn" stuff so the pharmaceutical/Alcohol companies can stay in his pocket and the 9 people in the state that actually support him will smile.

I'm guessing he's trying to pressure Abbott to sign, but he looked like a petulant child.

Here's a response from the owner of Hometown Hero, whose product he was holding up saying that it could kill a grown adult, and that "we don't know what's in this", when every ingredient and a lab test is on the package.
