This whole thing with the Pope is very disappointing. Especially since there are more Catholics per capita at TAMU than at Notre Dame.
I wasn't raised Catholic. I was raised Episcopalian which unfortunately is run by a bunch of angry lesbians now. I will never set foot in that satanic church again.
As a cadet back in the 80's I was one of the 3 in my fish class that was not Catholic so I went to Mass with my buddies.

There has not been a good pope since John Paul II.

This current pope is a marxist scumbag.

I hate to say this, but the Catholic church is a cult of evil. It did not use to be that way.
I am a new Christian. i went to catholic church for 20 years, and learnt nothing about the bible. I got tired of listening to the pastors opinions on gun control and climate change.

My entire family is now in a bible church, led there *by our kids*. The catholic church is losing out on an entire generation of young adults, by trying to fit to liberal culture. Its a losing battle.

That's not correct. Total number of catholics at TAMU are greater than at ND but ND has higher percentage of student population that are catholic.

I started this thread, so I only have myself to blame, but there is quite a bit of ignorance in this post.
- 'I am a new Christian': Catholics are Christians... in fact, the first ones.
- 'i went to catholic church for 20 years, and learnt nothing about the bible': That's on you.... we read from the bible in every mass, and the readings are the topic of the homily for probably 95% of those masses.
- 'I got tired of listening to the pastors opinions on gun control and climate change.': I am squarely in middle age and I have never heard a homily on those topics.

It doesn't sound like you were a very active Catholic. I will agree with your last point... any church that goes down the 'liberal' path is losing members.

I am not Catholic but have attended many masses with my wife. There have been multiple instances during the intercession where prayers were offered (did I phrase that right?) related to "changes in heart" towards immigration or "acceptance" of immigrants, as if all parishioners hated immigrants. There have been many other similar examples of subtle left leaning politics bleeding into those prayers, however I'll save those for another thread on another forum.

For the record, while I'm not Catholic nor ever will be; I think a strong, conservative Catholic Church is certainly a good thing. I hope the "conservative resurgence" amongst young Catholics is true, though I fear that the Catholic Church (at least worldwide) is heading in the wrong direction.

Most of us do of course. In fact, they are very welcome. Something that is conveniently overlooked when political biases are involved.

I think you're talking about the Universal prayer. They probably use GIA publications. Yes, they're bad. No question. I would raise the issue with her pastor because just as a matter of theology, they're problematic.

Personally think the church and its priests should keep from bringing up targeted political stances. Far too much nuance in most cases to boil it down to good vs. evil.

Ha, i was trying to keep it short too..

I grew up in Asia with a different religion, was a Jesus skeptic, and live in a 90% blue Austin neighborhood. The pastors focused on connection to the neighborhood, but it felt more like storytelling than deep Bible study. Our kids even bet on how the homily would tie into climate change, BLM, immigration, or gun control.

Yet, God was always speaking to me, and Jesus found me and my kids. Our church specifically, missed an audience that wants to hear from God but gets opinions instead. Sort of like the pope. For us, a bible church was refreshing and revealing. Love it.

No more!
The crap rolls out your mouth again
Haven't changed, your brain is still gelatine
Little whispers circle around your head
Why don't you worry about yourself instead?

Who are you? Where ya been? Where ya from?
Gossip is burning on the tip of your tongue
You lie so much, you believe yourself
Judge not lest ye be judged yourself

Holier than thou
You are
Holier than thou
You are
You know not

Before you judge me, take a look at you
Can't you find something better to do?
Point the finger, slow to understand
Arrogance and ignorance go hand in hand

It's not who you are, it's who you know
Others lives are the basis of your own
Burn your bridges, and built them back with wealth
Judge not lest ye be judged yourself

Holier than thou
You are
Holier than thou
You are
You know not

(Yeah! who the hell are you?)

Holier than thou
You are
Holier than thou
You are
You know not

Not!

Pope Francis is the worst pope in our lifetimes. He is a Marxist pawn who lives behind Vatican walls with armed guards - and criticizes walls and arms. Most of my fellow Catholics can't stand him.
He certainly reminds the more historical minded that bad popes DO happen, and its not any commentary on the Church's longevity chances. Its been pretty annoying having such an almost campus-left sounding pontiff at just the time when interest in serious and rededicated faith is such that the Orthodox are experiencing a deserved re-visit and rediscovery by those unfamiliar with the West-East split. A time where even undoing the Great Schism seemed possible -- but it won't with a Vatican diluting the differences with Islam and even secular stances --the Orthodox won't have anything to do with that. In fact, it strengthens their arguments about the papacy. And certainly about the post Vatican-I accretions.

If you went to a Catholic Church for 20 years and listened to three readings from the Holy Bible (Old Testament, Epistles and Gospel) every Mass and learned nothing of Christianity, that seems to be a YOU problem and not a Catholic Church problem.

That's absurd. You likely have a poor Pope, maybe a bad curia. There is the even terrifying possibility that you might even have an evil curia, but it is not the Catholic Church. Look at Washington --- its possible for the ruling class to be evil and it be only a commentary on the mercy and the restraint the public has had for not "throwing them in the Tiber" here or there -- which DID happen literally more than a few times with corrupt leadership. You must know the bishops set the tone, not the Vatican.

Curious -- who are the other possible predecessors? I can test if it seems possible. Some really rigid-minded did think that about John XXIII at times, so there's that. What are some would call that before now?
