From I saw in USACE most were high level GS engineers close to retirement anyway.

All we did was put them on a long Viking river cruise a summer earlier.

Maybe so, but this time, we need to not replace everyone who retires or takes the buyout.

That's fine, but I'm not working any extra to pick up the increased workload from being understaffed. And it will just result in longer approvals and regulatory timelines for private and public developers in our purview.

This is government worker mentality in a nutshell. Every single private employee on this board has been tasked with picking up an increased workload because of being understaffed. It's called work. We in private industry tend to solve the problems through innovation and efficiency gains.

But the fact that this is your mindset is wholly unsurprising, and in line with everything else you've posted on this board. It's just another one of your grifts.
Morals are lacking with certain people, and they keep doubling down from their ivory tower bragging about it while the rest of get screwed by their actions.

2% will never be missed. Trump needs to drop a hint that next Monday the layoffs begin.
I bet you could have 60% leave and not notice one bit of difference in the average American's life.

This would depend on the agency. If we lost 60% of our air traffic controllers or food inspection staff at USDA you'd feel it really quick.
Reagan fired a large amount of striking ATC.

Airplanes continued to fly.

As Teslag said, there's lots of ambiguity as to how this is supposed to work. Many have held off because of that.

My agency is having daily meetings to clarify how it's supposed to work. I think HR just sent out the "final" clarification this morning. That probably means more resignations today.

There may be some forthcoming lawsuits from the unions etc.or it may all be bluster.

There are some extremely upset fed employees. I was at a conference yesterday and thought some were going to have an aneurysm. It was very entertaining.

Those who took the deal were either already planning on retiring and got the early bonus money or they will be rehired as consultants by private companies doing the exact same job.

This is such a waste of money / scam to privatize so that buddies can get more government contracts.

We shall see - Musk canned 80% of Twitter's workforce, and it is great.

I imagine govt efficiency to be less than that. I think 80% should be the goal.

That sounds like the administrative state is daring Trump to fire them.

Edit: InfantryAgs post helped - (about uncertainty)
However, bureaucrats have been so entrenched, they think they are untouchable and unfireable. Happens in industry all the time.

Yeah, we'd probably have aircraft running into each other and kill 100 million chickens for bird flu.

And how often do those accidents happen? You want it amplified?

Maybe the answer is to hand off that responsibility to a responsible organization instead of just giving them more money?

So many of you are coming at this with a corporate, sane, profit-centered point of view. Fed gov does not resemble that at all.

My wife had an internship 20 years ago in DC, she was told to stay away from some guy because he was going to retire in like 3 years ( I think it was more). He was not given any new tasks, did not have a computer, and set up a crafting area in his office.

Can you imagine the scale of this from work from home?? Immense, I would have to guess.

I am totally for this offer - if you can prove you did not have another job while a full time employee of fed govt, and you are ready to retire or move on, then have a nice time off.

Just as efficiently? The skies are much more crowded in 2025 than they were in 1980. And it still took years for the backlog to be hired and replaced.

60% of staff lost would put us at roughly 1930 levels. Probably not what we want for certain departments. But then, there are certain departments that are completely worthless and need to be gutted 100% ( Dept. of Education, ATF, USAID etc.)

Low standards, better pay and benefits, and impossibility of being fired. That is government employment in the 2020s.

We all know how selfish you are. Between not willing to work any harder to earn your tax payer salary, to keeping that disability hand out even though you work full time, to backing out pre-planned PTO and bragging about your free government vacation days during a shutdown, to trying to scam your kids into getting Jewish scholarships.

Everyone here knows exactly who you are. You probably fit in great at your government cheese job.

Forgot gleefully ratting out your co-workers for refusing to get the jab.

The pay depends on agency. I'd make way more in the private sector. The top of the GS scale is about $195k. For engineers and the like with over 20 years experience and highly qualified that's lower than a lot of private sector jobs, especially when running entire offices or departments.

Pension is a big issue, particularly for relatively long served employees (10+ years) who have been required to pay in yo the pension program. Sure they can withdraw their contributions but, unless I'm mistaken, they don't receive any gains or match. So, say you've been paying in for 15 years, you're not going to want your retirement fund to take a giant kick in the nuts if you can avoid it.

That's not to say that this doesn't need to happen, but I can see why a lot of people aren't going to just walk away voluntarily for a few extra months pay. If you're halfway to retirement then you're looking at setting yourself back significantly.
