This is a fair assessment. We need the Navy to start off by not shooting down Navy planes.

You think Russia is pissed over "NATO expansion" now? Just wait and see how many nuclear threats they make if the US suddenly had bases in Greenland, lol.
Don't we still have bases in Iceland? My first husband's Dad was AF and stationed there in the 60s.BTKAG97 said:The United States has one military base in Greenland, Pituffik Space BaseRossticus said:

Depending on which article you read, there is Keflavik Naval Air Station or Keflavik Air Base. I am pretty sure we turned Keflavik NAS over to Iceland for ownership, but the US Navy still "operates" the base.aggiehawg said:Don't we still have bases in Iceland? ETA a better source, with reference to his pre-Xmas comment that Greenland is not for sale also.Quote:
Greenland's prime minister, Mute Egede, has renewed calls for independence from Denmark after US President-elect Donald Trump expressed interest in purchasing the Arctic island.
In his New Year's address, Egede stressed the need to "remove the obstacles to cooperation which we can describe as the shackles of the colonial era and move on," signaling a potential referendum on independence.
"Our cooperation with other countries and our trade relations cannot continue to take place solely through Denmark,"he said. "Work has already begun on creating the framework for Greenland as an independent state."

Strategically, it makes sense. But how do we make this happen?
Interesting trades? Maybe Puerto Rico and Maine? Any proposals?

Stupid question - why 2040? Why not now?
I don't buy the "Greenland is the new Panama" bit. What are they going to do; set up a toll booth on the ice and charge for boats to follow their ice breakers? As if Russia and the US wouldn't be able to cut their own lanes? And so what if ships skirt a bit wide to stay in international waters. Sure it's a strategically beneficial location IF the ice cap melts… but it unless they take after Somalia I don't see the economic play.

Best place on earth for a podcast recording? LOL again. There aren't even…more than a half dozen locations/buildings I'd think would work for this.Quote:
The younger Trump is going for a day trip to shoot video content for podcasting and will not be meeting with any government officials or political figures, according to a person familiar with the plans who was not authorized to speak publicly.
Danish broadcaster DR cited the head of the Department of Foreign Affairs, Mininnguaq Kleist, in reporting that Trump Jr. would be arriving Tuesday for a private visit, and there are no inquiries about a meeting with the Greenland government.
Greenland's prime minister, Mte B. Egede, hasn't commented.
The visit comes after President-elect Donald Trump again made comments about controlling the area in a statement last month as he announced his pick for U.S. ambassador to Denmark. "For purposes of National Security and Freedom throughout the World, the United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity," he said in a statement.

We need it with a naval base and airfield at minimum. Helps shut down the GIUK gap even more. Great strategic significance.

How many cars are there even in Nuuk? Sometimes it's even tough to get an uber from the airport in Lubbock.

Why would you fly to Lubbock and miss out on the most scenic drive in the whole state?
The natural resources alone make the economic case.halfastros81 said:
We can have navy and af bases there without having it as a US territory. I guess I'm agnostic about having it as a US territory but is it really a priority in terms of spending tax $ on it. I'm not saying it is or it isn't, would like to see some sort of economic case for it .
Similar to the Canadian shield, lots of precious and semi-precious metals, rare earth metals, gems, some O&G.halfastros81 said:
I'm not familiar with their natural resources , can you summarize said case ?
I would think it is both easier and harder than mining in Canada of northern Alaska. Easier because the accessible areas are going to be close to the coast, so easier to get equipment in and out via ship or barge during the non-ice flow season. Harder because there is less mining infrastructure in place, so more difficult to find qualified mechanics, operators, parts, etc. The challenges with ice/snow, permafrost, etc. should be relatively similar. It is all about the yield on the ore and the difficulty processing it otherwise and that will vary from site to site. Probably more hard rock mining than placer, so it will be more expensive to extract, but probably much richer than current ground available in Alaska and Canada because most of the richest deposits here have already been worked over for a century and a half.halfastros81 said:
How much $ to get access to said resources and potential value of the resources is a major part of the equation. I'm not doubting it's true but if the case is such a slam dunk it should be relatively easy to put some rough numbers to it.
