Most commonly the term "oligarch" refers to an individual who derives political power from their extreme wealth or significant business interests.
Insurance companies have about a 3%-4% margin. They aren't "getting rich by denying claims" or any of that nonsense. If they paid EVERY claim for every unnecessary test and procedure that hospitals ask for, then they would go bankrupt. Not Coach Jimbo said:
I persobally have no problem with CEOs. I do have a problem though with insurance companies (in multiple industries).
That said, I 100% am against murder, but I'm also a bit surprised this isn't a bigger problem.

This.
I have several family members who have workked n various parts of the insurance industry from underwriting to adjusting to loss control consulting.
And all have left because they were sickened by the very nature of the industry.
The Way the companies are set up the goals are to make customers think they are buying one product and then when a customer tries to make a claim, find a way to deny the claim.
It's basically a bait and switch business model.
One of the ONLY industries where a company is more profitable the more they can find ways to serve their customers worse....it's the exact opposite of the way good businesses run.

Total BS. Leftist propagandists have coopted the term to paint honest wealthy people in as negative light as possible. And you fell for it. It's the modern "robber baron" term which was equally as deceptive. Rockefeller didn't rob anybody. He made his money through free and voluntary exchange and made society vastly better than he found it.Gig em G said:aTmAg said:You proved my point. The original oligarchs in Russia were granted private ownership of state industries. The were granted them by being pals with politicians in power. In exchange, they paid off those politicians. That is why Putin is estimated to be worth $200B despite only having government jobs. It's corrupt to it's CORE.
To call American entrepreneurs like Musk and Thiel, who made their money by voluntary exchange, an "oligarch" is trying to deceptively equate them with the OG oligarchs in Russia. The two are nothing alike.
Theres more of the author filling in the blanks and making inferences than about anything Thiel actually said. It's completely biased in a way to invent a narrative. Its Texas Aggies, dammit said:

Y'all need to wake up. Who started setting up a massive amount of corporations? The nazis. Look up what Hitler's crew did in setting up corporations before escaping to South America.
A government CONTRACT is pay for service. They require multiple bidders and an transparent process. That is NOTHING like how the Russian oligarchs worked.Gig em G said:You need to do more research on what much of Thiel's business interests actually are.aTmAg said:Gig em G said:aTmAg said:You proved my point. Thiel made his money by making and investing in products that lots of other people were happy to pay for. To pretend he is anything like Vladimir Lisin is ridiculous.

There was absolutely NOTHING transparent about this, and let me know who the "multiple bidders" were. There's a reason the person who reported these illegal government activities to the American people has been living in exile since 2013.aTmAg said:A government CONTRACT is pay for service. Yeah, that is horse crap. Who is protecting Elon Musk? He was having every type of lawfare thrown at him from all directions.LOYAL AG said:The oligarchs in the U.S. are protected by corrupt government officials. Not sure what point you are trying to make. Pretty much every huge corporation in America got its start making and investing in products people were happy to pay for. Then they figured out they could pay corrupt politicians to implement government regulations designed to protect their lofty positions at which point they stoped trying to compete in a capitalist society and started buying protection from competition and at THAT point they became oligarchs.aTmAg said:The oligarchs in Russia were granted their money and positions by corrupt government officials.LOYAL AG said:We aren't a capitalist society so let's start there. China's all-seeing skynet now has more than 700 million CCTV cameras (half of the world total), and it's real-time spying on all of its 1.4 billion citizens to give them a personal social credit score, based on how they behave.

You are actually on the right track. We certainly have the conflict sowing and lying "yellow journalism" of that age. In many ways indeed, we have become a fiscal oligarchy. But its not the CEOs of standard corporations. Its more centered in the political-press class and their donor class. Another similarity is how the law systems are steered and structured to favor the upper tier. The present is remarkably like the last decades of the 19th and early 20th.General Jack D. Ripper said:
