Unless she's up for some rigorous rehab - which most 80+ year old's aren't - this is more of a game ender than a game changer.
If she gets an infection, she's likely done.
Sepsis is a big deal. Most of it seems to happen after the bone is set with pins or replaced. It's a closed wound infection. It seems (to a layman's reading) like most cases are only discovered when the fever begins.
