Complete embargo and surround their ports to cut off trade entirely if they pull something like that. Arrest Canadians and put them in camps. LFG m-fer.

Can't imagine why parallels to Hitler were drawn with posts like this calling for one of our two neighbor's citizens to be put in camps. And it being liked.
You mis-spelled FDR, who led America's war against the national socialists, when we were under attack from both Asia and Europe.

And your sarcasm meter is broken.

We're under attack?

So you are willing to allow your fellow libs in New York, Michigan and Wisconsin to go dark and freeze? Ok then.

What makes you think I'm a lib?

Uhh, because you are?

The truth is I'm an early oughts Republican in terms of views. But that's a liberal in Trump's party, which is odd because Trump is liberal.

So basically a Dick Cheney/Donald Rumsfeld/Liz Cheney/Haliburton/Bill Kristol Republican who now votes Democrat and pals around with the Lincoln Project

Ok got it

Congrats, I guess

Any public economic threat to the US should be taken with a grain of salt. We have 100% leverage. They will all back down when push comes to shove.

Power flows pretty seamlessly back and forth across the US-Hat border as opposed to the US-Mexico border. Many of the provinces have large govt owned hydro facilities that have lots of excess cheap power to sell during the summer across the border to the upper midwest and new england areas. There is a mix of mostly longer term bilateral contracts and smaller amounts of daily spot power. They've been doing this for decades. If Canada can sell it cheaper in the spot market than the US entities up there can make it themselves that day they ramp their plants down and buy cheap spot stuff from Canada. Manitoba actually is a member of the big US grid operator MISO out of Indianapolis. The Canadian polticos can't do much about the firm power on long term contracts. They could make it more difficult for the canadian schedulers to bid cheap power into the spot markets. The spot markets aren't all that much power compared to the amount sold on long term bilateral contracts typically. Quebec has its own grid and when they are happy (getting everything they want) they will connect to the entire eastern US and Canada grid and sell. But if they don't get their way they will essentially take their ball and go home (disconnect from the rest of the US-Canada eastern grid) say were French Separatists and not sell anything to anybody outside Quebec. That has been going on for decades.

Congrats? On being socially and fiscally conservative? Ok. Congrats to you on supporting someone who licks Putin's b-hole, will balloon our deficit and is morally bankrupt.

Great move - harm Canadian power producers by preventing them from selling abroad. Less demand means lower prices. How many power plants will that close? Actions have consequences.

Anyone that thinks that politicians in general aren't morally bankrupt, on all sides, is hilariously naive or dangerously stupid. Yes there are some people that go into it for good reasons but to rise to any point of prominence or to last of any significant length of time requires so many compromises and other issues. What an absolutely mind blowing arrogant blind spot. How embaressing.

CBC: "Ontario launches multimillion-dollar U.S. ad campaign amid Trump's tariff threat"
"The Ontario government launched a multimillion-dollar ad campaign touting the province as a long-standing friend and ally to the U.S. It comes as president-elect Donald Trump is threatening 25 per cent tariffs on all Canadian products once he comes into office."

So if dude turns off the power, that means there is no bill to pay from the customer. Double Whammy!

We will figure out how to get power to those in need.

If you mean by applying tariffs, which is a tax on American consumers, I agree completely. So did Adam Smith, with the exception of situations vital to our strategic interest.

That's a consequence of playing hardball in international trade, and I can't really fault Canada for taking this stance. Trump wants something from Canada, and he threatens significant tariffs if he doesn't get it. Canada in turns threatens its own significant retaliation. It's dangerous for both sides and encourages them to negotiate. There will no doubt be some brinksmanship and short-term pain for both sides, but Trump at least isn't a stupid negotiator. He'll ultimately get a win, or at least something he can call a win, and ideally something that Canada can call a win as well.

How many American businesses and households would be harmed due to no power for potentially weeks or months? I guarantee it would dwarf the harm to the Canadian utilities.

As you said, actions have consequences.

Mi and Wisky didn't vote blue this last election. We could just leave the power off to Detroit, Ann-arbor, NYC, Albany, etc and Milwaukee then reroute it to red areas of those states and call it a day.

An early aughts republican is literally a nazi to about 2/3 the country. What items has trump moved the party to the left (from where they were running in 2016-17, not from where they were in 2002) that specifically bother you?

There are a few, and I likely agree with your dissent on them, just wondering.

Kinda got to respect him sticking up for Canada and avoiding taking the CNN bait to personally attack
Trump. Our leaders make threats, their leaders make threats, and hopefully the outcome is more equitable balanced trade. That's all Trump is trying to do, but he can't come out and say these tariffs are a negotiation stick, or worst case, probation for certain countries.

I am all for our new American Overlords. Doug Ford is an old school Liberal Democrat and enjoys the tyrannical powers the Canadian political system affords him as Premier.

The Canadian system is like a dual dictatorship. Provincial Premiers over their jurisdictions and the Prime Minister over theirs.
