Trump doesn't want tariffs. He's using the threat of tariffs to get what he does want and what is best for America. It feels weird because even Olds like me have a hard time remembering a US president taking a hard line on protecting Americans and American interests.

Why does Canada get a pass? Trudeau is not our friend anymore than the wacko chick that is now president of Mexico or Maduro in Venezuela. They all need to be reminded of who's boss.

I'm fine with adding the Canadian provinces as about 4 different states. Not sure which one Castreau would run. Maybe he could be honorary king of the north.

Is the 25% tariff a ploy to get Trudeau to bend to Trump's demands?

I do business with someone in Canada and he's already told me that if the tariffs go into effect he won't do business in the U.S. anymore. It's very much a niche product and it would be extremely difficult to find a similar producer here in the States for the same costs.
Sounds like you've stumbled on an opportunity to manufacture the product here.
Thats not an opportunity. It's a forced requirement.

Lol, what a typical liberal stance.

Conservative - sees an opportunity in this to grow a new industry here in the U.S., one that could provide jobs and enrich yourself and other fellow Americans.

Liberal - whines that you're being "forced" to work instead of having a foreign-made product handed to you on a silver plate.
Im not a lib, but you miss my point which is totally apolitical.

Canada may prove to be a bit different due to a similar cost and standard or living, but things are generally already made where they're cheapest. Tariffs intentionally disrupt this free market phenomenon. Making something here instead, from a business consumer's perspective does nothing more than raise prices for them. It's a choice that few would entertain, given the alternative.

But by all means, if you want to pay more for things due to government intervention, go for it. I personally can't think of a more liberal position, myself.

Fine, call it just selfish logic then, as opposed to liberal. But that logic of yours - whatever method is cheapest for your pocketbook, damn the consequences to our overall economy and wellbeing - is what's lead to the U.S. being at the mercy of foreign enemy nations to produce what we need. Along that same logic, can I assume you're OK with foreign nationals and governments buying up U.S. real estate, just as long as they're the highest bidder? Hey, whatever makes you the most money personally, right?

**** the globalization of production for just any and every product. We are NOT one happy world that gets along.

Maybe we can just take Alberta and let Canada keep the rest.
BC, and Saskatchewan are still overwhelmingly conservative. They've got first nations that are probably more liberal.

It's Ontario, and especially Quebec that rule the whole place... Those two are the equivalent to our coastal California and NYC
BC is similar to Washington, controlled by the uber liberals in Vancouver even if much of the rest of the Province is conservative. Alberta and Saskatchewan are conservative but between them they have about 6 million people and Canada has 40 million, about half of which live near Toronto. Ontario runs that country because it is a Parliamentary system and to an extent Quebec which extorts whomever is in power to make sure they get special treatment to act independently and French (essentially they make their own rules and get lots of money from everyone else then vote with whomever is in power because they don't care what the rest of Canada is dealing with). It's hard for most to comprehend how much space they have with so little population as so many people live in a few metros and most of the country is just empty.

Alberta and Saskatchewan are the jewels though because that is where all the natural resources are as well, they are very similar to Texans with a funny accent. They also have Lake Louise and the most beautiful parts of the country. Would take those two Provinces in a heartbeat. As Canada has aged they are basically being used to fund the rest of the country with their natural resources even though the politics in those areas are very different than Ontario and certainly Quebec. They should have seceded decades ago as they get very little benefit out of the arrangement and would be very wealthy and prosperous if they were an independent country or part of the US.

As a sidenote, I'll never forget years ago watching the election with my Canadian neighbor who had the CBC. From the time the polls closed to virtually all the votes being counted and a complete change in government (at that time from Liberal to Conservative) was less than 2 hours. Really makes you see just how messed up our voting is here.

Still struggling with the butt kicking Kamala took. It's ok. We knew she was going to lose. I will say I was shocked by how horrible a candidate she was and how bad she lost.

Meanwhile, everyone pays more, prices never come down, and we take one more step towards third world status andnhyper inflation. But hey, one side "won" and a few people got rich out of the deal.

Right? Everyone screaming about using tariffs to persuade our neighbors to be good neighbors by reducing the illegals and drugs coming across our border.

Good neighbors would know it is in all of our interest to stop that ****.

Canada and Mexico screaming that raising tariffs is unfair shows what kind of neighbors they really are.

Update: Trudeau told Freeland she was going to be re-assigned so she quit in a huff about "America First."

That Trump managed to get her fired in one meeting with Justin is amazing. LOL.
