BC, and Saskatchewan are still overwhelmingly conservative. They've got first nations that are probably more liberal.

It's Ontario, and especially Quebec that rule the whole place... Those two are the equivalent to our coastal California and NYC

Is the 25% tariff a ploy to get Trudeau to bend to Trump's demands?

I do business with someone in Canada and he's already told me that if the tariffs go into effect he won't do business in the U.S. anymore. It's very much a niche product and it would be extremely difficult to find a similar producer here in the States for the same costs.

Sounds like you've stumbled on an opportunity to manufacture the product here.

I think it's buried somewhere in our regular trading with Canada. We import a lot of oil (export a lot too), timber, and manufactured goods.

Do we pay tariffs on some or a lot of that?

How will Trump do it within the confines of the USMCA agreements?

Wouldn't a niche product with few manufacturers be the best sort of product to withstand a tarrif? Just pass the increased cost onto the consumer and because they can't get it anywhere else, they'll pay it.

Trudeau has nothing to negotiate. He's lucky Vladimir isn't our leader, we could just steamroll them and take their resources. Could even go Iran/Lebanon on them and force them to fight proxy wars for us.

The way that Castro Jr cracked down on truckers during "COVID" should cut them off completely from the money that we probably give them.

I don't actually think we have any of the "money". It's a great Ponzi scheme, but I support cutting Canada off.

Lol, what a typical liberal stance.

Conservative - sees an opportunity in this to grow a new industry here in the U.S., one that could provide jobs and enrich yourself and other fellow Americans.

Liberal - whines that you're being "forced" to work instead of having a foreign-made product handed to you on a silver plate.

We've invaded Canada what, twice, and it didn't go well, though they are vastly softer than they used to be. Still, that's a population we really don't want to colonize into voting in our elections.

I'd rather negotiate a way to give them coastal Oregon and Washington (SeaTac and Portlandia). There are still some nice medical facilities up that way to help them out, and plenty of fellow commies who will be thrilled to join with their brethren I'd think. I'm also willing to throw in Wayne County in Michigan to sweeten the deal.

Im not a lib, but you miss my point which is totally apolitical.

Canada may prove to be a bit different due to a similar cost and standard or living, but things are generally already made where they're cheapest. Tariffs intentionally disrupt this free market phenomenon. Making something here instead, from a business consumer's perspective does nothing more than raise prices for them. It's a choice that few would entertain, given the alternative.

But by all means, if you want to pay more for things due to government intervention, go for it. I personally can't think of a more liberal position, myself.

Trump doesn't want tariffs. He's using the threat of tariffs to get what he does want and what is best for America. It feels weird because even Olds like me have a hard time remembering a US president taking a hard line on protecting Americans and American interests.
