It's a shame. They used to make some nIce cars. i still look at Z32 300ZX TT's when they show up on BAT. I don't have enough space for another vehicle else I would have pulled the trigger on one.

I put a very high value on reliability in my cars.
Same here. I've learned over time to trade before I start having issues.

The timing is a guess for sure. You don't want to trade away good miles left on a vehicle, but as long as that's reflected in the resale value, then you're probably not losing much. I just hate unreliable stuff. Part of it is the extra cost to fix, but the bigger part is just the PITA to have to deal with a vehicle that's down, getting it into the shop, the back and forth with the mechanics and their trustworthiness, and on and on.

I traded both of those F150 turbos around 75k miles before I had issues and never looked back. I thought the V8 was inferior to the turbos based on all the hype, but having driven both, I prefer it.

Id rather have a "dated" interior than a piece of overpriced junk.

The 2.7 GM is proven now and a hell of a motor. Hardly junk, and far better than the Tacoma's disaster in their re-design. Again, things have changed in 5-10 years.

The Colorado and whatever GMC calls theirs has one of the worst reliability ratings of vehicles built this century. Their best years are bad and their worst years are horrific. That's not to say there isn't an engine or two that is OK but overall build is the key. It doesn't matter what it is in the shop for.

The current Colorado/Canyon has only been out two years and was motortrends truck of the year.

Things change and brand loyalty/reputation is a thing of the past. You're only as good as your current offering

Seriously? You're offering Motortrend as a source for anything reliable/long standing or for that matter much of anything?

The Chevy Volt and Ford Fusion, not to mention the POS PT Cruiser, have been MT cars of the year in recent history. How many of those are still on the road?

Your second sentence has nothing to do with what I said. The Colo/Can is in its 3rd Gen with no fewer than like 8 different GAS engines (don't know how many diesels) during that time. That's a little like keeping the same head coach and changing coordinators every other year as a means to win football games -- it never works. As I said in my post, that's just the ENGINE. The current version offers 2 versions of the same gas engine with no diesel offerings. No telling how long the other components, drive train or otherwise, will last.

Buy whatever you want; its your money. But buying GM is a fools game.

If you want reliability then grab a Titan before they are gone. Everything else, including the Tundra is the same as far as reliability goes.
Had an '06 Titan back in the day and it was a nice truck. That said the idea of buying a truck that has been discontinued from a company in financial trouble makes me nervous.

This post would have been valid 10 years ago. All manufacturers are as reliable as each other now.

It should. No manufacturer has a leg up on reliability in 2024. So buy capability, performance, and the features you want. Because the durability is a crapshoot.

As a pre turbo (read naturally aspirated V6) 2020 Tacoma TRD Off Road owner/driver (love it), and especially after the Toyo turbo problems, the Nissan Frontier would be my first look if I was in the market for a mid-size truck. Furthermore, you can totally rule me out on the hybrid BS from Toyota.

GAR-BAGE.

I hope Nissan doesn't fail. It may be the future for the mid-size truck from a reliability metric.

Nissan went through a CVT phase where they were almost all in on that crap, and turbo 4 and everything else going wrong, but their dealer network (and Infiniti) are pretty good at this point and they are back to aisin transmissions so I think they are better again for the time, but could certainly benefit from some Honda (or Mazda) parts bin alliance, imho.

Not to hijack, but Japan is disappearing. They will have half the population they have now in the year 2100, around 65 million, with about half of that being 65 and older. That is a linear decline over time, about a 6.5% reduction each decade. Many of these Japanese companies, like Nissan, will disappear also. It's a population collapse.

Japans GDP per capita is also lower than Mississippi, which is the lowest of the 50 states. Saw this stat recently and it surprised me.

Damn, the is surprising.

It makes sense though. I mean, when an island focuses on living solely like an island, it's kind of inevitable.

Japan also has a ton of public debt. I think the debt to GDP is over 200%. I read somewhere that it's the only country in history that has over 130% in which the currency has not failed. Maybe just a matter of time.

They are in the 260s now and we are top 10 at about 130%. We share the stage with such juggernauts as Sudan, Venezuela, Greece, and Italy.

Funny. A family member bought a used Altima and I told them I don't normally recommend extended warranties but on that car the transmission has a history of failing. They got the warranty and sure enough a few months later the transmission went out and the warranty paid for itself.

I test drove a few of the new frontiers a few weeks ago. Abysmally dated interior, no option for ventilated seats, and the torque was lacking. On the plus side it did seem well built and solid.

My Grand Cherokee had to get a new transmission at 48,000 miles. Sounds like I might as well get a Defender (if the Scout falls through). Land Rover is getting to be as reliable as anything else.
Huh???

Well, it's more of a race to the bottom. Land Rover makes pretty, luxurious vehicles. It's just that the reliability sucks. As the other carmakers' reliability numbers drop, Land Rover starts to become a more viable option.

I had a early 2000s Frontier and loved it. It was pretty plain but nice enough inside, and the exterior was cool. We traded it for a Titan that I never liked as much, mainly because the gas mileage was dismal. I want to like the new Frontier, but after having nicer interiors, it's difficult to go back.

There are Ford dealers suing Ford over not buying back inventory. A quick browse of YouTube will show you dealership after dealership with cars that have been sitting for nearly a year unable to move. Even the auctions are having issues.

They're not discounting, but they're also flailing trying to move inventory. The desperation point is approaching quickly.

I was addressing your claim of 40% off MSRP deals. Can you point to one? Literally anywhere?

I did not say they are currently selling for 40% off. I said if they don't do something they'll struggle to sell at that price point...

I do remember Infiniti cutting prices on the 24 qx80s by 15k+
I think that is so they can move the previous generation now that the new QX80 is out.

I've owned three Nissans (Rogue SL, Rogue SL, Murano Platinum) and have been delighted with all three. Oil, wipers, tires, battery…….has been it on all of them.
I somehow became a Nissan/Infiniti guy in the 90's. Started with a Sentra, then an Altima, then we bought two Infinitis. After 2000 we switched to other brands until I recently bought a '23 Titan. That's the last reliable full sized truck after the Tundras turned to crap and now they stopped making it.

On an unrelated note, I have a 2015 Navigator thats never given me any trouble. That era Navigator seems to be a sweet spot for reliability. I'm scared to get a new one because I feel like all the added tech will give me problems.

I think the elephant in the room, and the no one wants to admit, is that reliability is no longer seen as a feature to the vast majority of American car buyers. And to a degree I'm guilty of this. I don't keep any vehicle more than 3 years or 50,000 miles. So I don't particularly care that it can go for 10 years and 200,000 miles.
And I appreciate that. 52 YO, never paid more than $20K for a car, 6 kids, and closing in on my number.

Honda's reliability lies in their refusal to be first at technology implementation. Pretty brilliant.

How on earth are you people breaking your cars so fast and often?

My lowest mileage vehicle is at 230,000 miles.
My 390,000 mile suburban finally started having a transmission issue, but I'll spend 2 hours swapping out the fluid and filter in my garage to get it back in service.
I just finished a 1000 mile road trip including some off roading in a 25 year old nissan, 285,000 miles. Ran great. Never worried a second about if it would.

I don't get it.

Though, for what it is worth, I have the tools, time, and knowledge to do nearly all my own maintenance and most repairs, so I can keep them going without having to turn them over to a shop when minor things come up.
