Andrew Bailey in Missouri would be at the top of my short list. Going after Act Blue, Media Matters and a host of other stuff in about two years. Very aggressive, Dems and media (I repeat myself) HATE the guy. Doesn't have the baggage Paxton does.

Jonathan Turley just might work. He has the skill and the integrity. However, does he have the anger at the abuses of the "two tier " and weaponized justice system to do the needed tearing down? If so, he would be hard for the dirt manufacturers to smear.

Well, he has the five main qualifications:

He has the experience running a very large organization.
He has tried a few cases in the past.
The R senators like him.
He has no sin in his life.
He is not a hard conservative.

Bill Barr deivered a great speech about the unitary executiv view od Article II powers granted to the POTUS. Then he turned around and thwarted that authority, directly but didn't immediately resign. That is disqualifying to me.

Richardsona and Ruckelshaus resigned on the spot during th Saturday Night Massacre when they refused to fire Archibald Cox. (And note Nixon's firing of Cox was NOT one the proposed Articles of Impeachment from the House before Nixon resigned. It was legal.)

Or Trump retrenches and turns to Todd Blanche, currently nominated for DAG. Elevate him to AG? He was a prosecutor in SDNY. Maybe?

Agree. My preference would be someone who already has had experience at DOJ and understand how the swamp works there. Even though Blanche was not at Main Justice (that I am aware of) the SDNY is the crown jewel and a very large organization emblematic of the DOJ on a smaller scale but no less serpentine full of turf wars.
