I am sure it was mentioned (not reading all 7 pages of the thread), but did anyone think this was a serious nomination? I'm not sure what the ultimate end game is, but when I first heard he was the AG choice I immediately thought it was a massive troll job.

I always thought it was just a favor from Trump to get him out of the house in a reasonably defensible way before the report got dropped. Now Trump will hire him to some other role in the admin and he gets to keep labeling the investigation as a witch hunt because it will never get released.

That makes some sense. And I never thought it was a serious hire either. I do find it funny how people think this is the swamp winning.

Gaetz is just a POS. Is what it is.

The trouble with quotes on the internet is that you never know if they are genuine. -- Abraham Lincoln.

It was a horrible nomination by Trump. I love most of his picks but not this one. Everyone hates this guy. Trump needs a bulldog AG like Obama had in Holder, but appointing someone that even your own party hates is not a smart move.

On an unrelated note, I am holding out hope that Trump nominates Cruz to the SCOTUS when Clarence Thonas retires. That would cause the most epic meltdown by the Dems.
On one hand I'm not sure Cruz has anyone in the senate that would vote for him but they would get rid of him so that's a tough call.

You really don't get it. I am a retired lawyer so I look at evidence. I didn't like the Gaetz pick at all but I needed to sort through the allegations against him just because that's who I am.

But when the adult womens' who were paid to have sex, THEIR LAWYER, went on record admitting they were hookers and they saw a 17 year old "friend" on the house party circuit having sex with Gaetz?

What did I say? "Am I reading that correctly?" Self admitted hookers recognized anothe hooker who just happened to be underage at a house party they were working? She might have been undersage but she was in the industry.

So, how much of a crime is it if the "minor" in question is actually a sex worker before the encounter? And is that one of the major reasons DOJ walked away from any case against him? Credibility issues with the on;y witnesses? And then today, the final cherry on top was that the "second" claim of Gaetz having had sex with an underage person WAS THE SAME HOOKER, WHO DID A THREE WAY that time?

Gaetz is smarmy. Not my cup of tea at all, but he isn't Jeffrey Epstein here. Questioning the allegations against him is just what lawyers do. What I did.

Anyone know why? I thought with Trump going all in on him and threatening everyone with Elon-funded primaries, it was a given.

The House ethics report on his alleged drug and sex parties, supposedly including underage girls, was close to coming out and he knew it would be a bad look for him. Especially since the report was driven primarily by his fellow Republicans. Resigning from the House after his nomination put a stop to the investigation. If he had no concern about the findings there was no reason to resign until January, especially with the already small majority in the House. At this point it's all allegations and his denials, but there's no way the report wouldn't either be made available to the Senate or leak out to the public. If he's innocent of the allegations he should have stayed in and the Senate investigation would have cleared him. Instead, he quit.

No. Not everyone hates this guy.

Stop being spineless and acquiescing to our opposition and RINO "feels".

If you want real change and real disruption in DC, you should have supported Gaetz.

Now is not the time for circular firing squads..... we have the enemy scattered and confused on the battlefield.... now is the time to politically destroy them.

No, now is not the time to be insulting other Ags who demand a highly qualified AG with real experience rather than just a hot headed grenade thrower. Maybe Trump appoints a state AG with real experience and who is also a conservative bulldog.

Insisting on competence along with a bulldog mentality is not being spineless. And I could give a rat's ass about how the dems/communists feel Insisting on a candidate that is exceptional working with people AND a dedicated conservative is good politics.

Yes, Gaetz is getting railroaded with this underage girl thing. But a good leader and true statesman would have never put himself in position for there to be any doubt.

Stop insulting other Ags and start debating the topic.

This.

I've been very vocal about my opinion that Gaetz is not qualified, professionally, for the job, but all this sex scandal stuff never really moved the needle for me, beyond creating the impression that Gaetz is a crass creep that I would not enjoy being around, which really doesn't factor into whether he should be confirmed. The fact that the media drove the discussion exclusively in that direction is just more evidence of how detrimental the MSM is to this country.

I think it's all working by constitutional design, and I'm fine with it. Trump made a selection. The Senate has the role of approval, and while typically very deferential to a president of the same party, they're not a rubber stamp either if the nominee is low quality. Gaetz was an awful choice from an experience and ethics standpoint. He withdrew his nomination when it became clear it would cause more distraction to implementing Trump's agenda than if he persisted. Trump picked another one, which appears to be a much better candidate. I think she'll sail through confirmation and will be the next AG.

The constitution works. Now let's get on with implementing a Republican agenda.

If there wasn't anything in that ethics report, we'd all know it. This confirms that.

What?! If there was nothing in it, nothing would have been done… just like nothing happened already.
Really? Or did he get out ahead of the posse? I don't know, and the thing is, you don't either.

I think if there was nothing in it, there wouldn't be this made scramble to keep it from going public. Do you honestly think if there was nothing in it that Matt Gaetz's grandstanding ass would just let it pass quietly?

No way. He's got faces to rub in it.

If he returns to the House (since he was elected), then you can come back and kiss our asses for being wrong.

Only the right frags itself. We have to get Murkowski and Collins primaried.

Murkowski yes

Collins is the best you'll get in that seat. Primary her and you are certain to get a Democrat.

There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

Just incredible that anyone as dumb as Murkowski is could become a Senator.
